PSP and Nintendo DS Battle Out, Nintendo Wii Sales Very Low

Now, first thing's first, headlines stating that the PSP outsold the Nintendo DS aren't exactly accurate. Why other web outlet's ignore the fact that combined with the sales of the outgoing Nintendo DS Lite, sales of the NDS are actually higher than that of the PSP. Yes, the PSP outsold the all new DSi, but as a whole, the NDS is still king, with 47,542 sold. But, soon enough remaining stock of the DS Lite will deplete, and if the PSP can maintain momentum, it'll keep outselling the DSi.

The other major news story here is the catastrophic collapse of Nintendo Wii sales. Going from a console that consistently sold above 50k units, many times over 100k weekly, the Wii is sitting at the bottom of the barrel with 13k sold, thanks to an absolute drought in software, especially anything notable. The PlayStation 3 remains the best selling home console, though not by much, with over 16k sold. And the PS2 is showing very little signs of life remaining.

PSP – 40,886

DSi – 40,673

PS3 – 16,701

Wii – 13,349

Xbox 360 – 10,134

DS Lite – 6,869

PS2 – 4,531

You forgot to mention that the 360 saw a sales boost thanks to a new bundle in the Japanese market….

Not yet!

PS3 needs a price cut, and to be bundled with GoW III or Unchartered II or GT5… then we'll see hell break loose

People over starting to see that all the good wii games have come out there is nothing to look forward to in the future.I imagine when FFVIII comes out the ps3 sales are going to triple but I still don't get why is not coming to the 360 over there.

"Catastrophic collapse of Nintendo Wii sales" I just like the way that sounds 🙂

Mabey you would also like the way Arnold's (PSXE Administrator) quote sounds. "Here the wii is still selling like mad".

Bet the PSP is doing so good because of the titles like Monster hunter Freedom Unite. Hope we get that title here in Canada/US soon! Im waiting anxiously.

Its about time the Wii sales start plummeting. I heard rumors that Nintendo representatives or should I say Reggie Fils-aime told gamestop to reserve space for a big hitter to come out for this Holiday (Zelda Wii anyone!). I bet when this starts to happen to them they are going to have to bring out the hardcore titles, for everything else on Wii or 3rd party is just garbage. Meanwhile Sony has some secrets of their own. I just cant wait for E3 09! I hope Sony announces Grand Turismo 5, and Pa Rappa the Rapper 3 !

"Zelda Wii anyone!"

The Wii already has a Zelda title. And it's possible that it could be another Zelda title since Shigeru Miyamoto announced at last years E3 that another was in the works for the system.

There are only so many gamers in the world, perhaps everyone already has a Wii.

well, with 140 million sold, i think 100 million of those AT LEAST werent rebought ps2s and that's 3-4 times as much as the wii, so no, not everyone's got a wii, everyone who actually wanted a wii (grannies and children) have one

Sony appears to have made a complete turn-around from 2006. Kudos! Well combined with the plummet in software for the 360 and the near complete lack of software for the Wii, I guess it was bound to happen eventually.

Further proof that America does not dictate the gaming industry. Here the Wii is still selling like mad, in Japan the frenzy has pretty much died (at least for now).

I think its correct not to include the DSi numbers with the DS Lite numbers. With the DSi, your going to find tht the majority of sales are going to be from DS lite owners upgrading to the DSi for its new features that can't be done on the DS or DS lite. With the PSP everything that the PSP 3000 does, PSP 1000 can do too. When Sony upgrades with features and peripherals, its for all 3 version, well except for the video out, PSP 1000 can't do that.
The DS and DS lite won't have those games that will take advantage of the crappy 0.3mp camera the DSi has, also the older 2 won't have the DSware to download games.
So to me the DSi is more of a new handheld rather than just an upgrade.

I worked a midnight release for the DSi at Gamestop, and about 5 people showed up. Most of the kids were asleep by then, of course.

Not true! One example is that the 3000 can play games over tv, and the 1000 can not.Other upgrades too that makes the 3000 better. Also when Sony releases their new version, it will have new features that the others do not have, so to get new features you have to buy new psp's.

There are potential boosts in PS3 sales in the future because of games and pricecuts. There's nothing coming in the future for Wii… maybe the best is Monster Hunter. We'll see how well that goes, cause the Wii isn't for hardcore gamers anymore. Anyway… if there's no reason for the Japanese to get the Wiis now, what's makes anyone think the sales will increase for no reason? Wii is dead in Japan…

While I agree that the wii is out of games, I think the drop in sales has more to do with the economy. As Ben has pointed out many times before, it is not a real gaming console, and the real consoles are recession proof.

the only reason i would get a wii is for all the classic games via the virtual console, when ever it goes to $100, I'm definitely getting one.. kinda off topic, w/e

it's about time the wii mania has stopped.

Cool cool, wtf at 360 with 5 digits, pffft

Anyway I agree with peoeple, a price cut for the godzilla of consoles(ps3) will be a great tsunami.

The only reason wii sales have dropped is because 90 percent of the population already owns one. Wouldn't it be nice if 90 percent of the population bought ps3's. That won't happen until there is a major price drop. When talking about the ps3 being worth every penny, and being the best system, I often see comparisons here of a Ford to a Ferrari. Well look around, you won't see very many people that own a Ferrari.
