Cryptic updates are always good discussion facilitators, and this one is bound to pique your interest if you're a racing fan.
It's actually an assembly of cryptic messages, all posted up over at the GTPlanet forums . As you can see, that poetic mini-mess has already been translated by other forumites – to some extent – and it seems the rumors are big: not only can we expect over 600 cars and a whopping 96 different tracks, but it seems the game will either launch on December 1 or in March of 2010. There's further mention of user-created tracks (using existing portions of the courses included) and the possibility that we'll select Basic or Professional mode at the start of the game. Professional may be tougher, but it'll boast more options. Now, there's no way of knowing where the information came from, so we certainly can't say any of this is official, but it certainly sounds plausible…and that's enough to ignite a full-blown debate. We've already said the PlayStation 3 could really use Gran Turismo 5 in 2009 , so if it came in December, that would pretty much cinch the holiday battle for Sony. Combine it with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and it's win-effing-win.
If it drops in March, however, it'll likely compete with God of War III , and it seems like a bizarre time for two giant blockbuster exclusives to launch. As for the rest, we love the idea of 96 tracks; that represents a whole lot of practicing!
Related Game(s): Gran Turismo 5
After getting my refurb PS3 in and getting all my games installed again (ha, looking at you Ben) I played GT5P a bit.
Man, the game just looks amazing. I cannot wait to see the full working title.
Any idea what happened with car damage? Will it be included or was it scrapped?
Not needed
I believe in the cryptic message it was referencing two versions of GT5, one with Physics and one without, the "Great Price" said in it mabey means that in order to unlock everything in the game you must play through the game in the Car Damage mode, which will be a great price because everyone would have to adjust to play GT with damage cause its never existed.
Also I had the Idea that they are going to release GT5 with an Official GT5 Driving Wheel, which would be the "Great Price" to experience the game in all its glory…Just a theory though 😉
Last I heard about car damage was that they actually had to get permission from the automakers to do it. Dunno why that would be, though.
It's utter BS when PS3 slamboys say GT5P sucks because it doesn't even have damage. Those are probably the same babies who hate K2 because it doesn't control exactly like CoD4.
xnonsuchx
If I could hug you to death, I would….
*nods in complete agreement*
@ xNonSuchx – You are correct that Kazunori and PD had to get permission from the car companies. The reason being is because they provide the PD team so much detailed information regarding their cars that some of them don't want to see their babies crushed. Or, if you think about it in a legal sense, given how realistic and detailed Kaz/PD makes the GT series, one could imagine that using GT5 to perform crash tests could reveal some interesting facts about vehicle reliability/safety etc.. This is simply a theory, but it would make sense, especially given PD's knack for realism.
Either way, I concur with you, damage isn't needed, because the game is about driving…not about crashing. If you want to crash, play Burnout or some other ridiculous cartoony game. Leave my GT5 alone, or I may just have to track you down and put you in the ground.
Morne
GT doesn't need damage because it's not about crashing into others. If you race properly like you're MEANT to then the most you ever damage your car would be a scrape.
I personally can't wait 😀 I play GT:5P a lot using my G25 and I absolutly love it. You can practically learn to drive a car by using my current set-up.
I wouldn't mind if I had to wait till March. There is plenty to keep me busy till then 🙂
Now if I could just find a legal way to get enough money to buy an awesome racing setup…..
"Now if I could just find a legal way to get enough money to buy an awesome racing setup….."
you could try working 😉
(might not be too easy in this economic climate though…)
Oh but I do work, but I'm talking about the setup with the seat and everything that costs at least a couple thousand dollars. I can afford the wheel but it just not as fun sitting in a normal chair with it clamped to a table.
Maybe Sony will release either GT5 or GOWIII on Dec. 1 and in March 2010 depending on which game is ready to go on Dec. 1.
I'm sure sure Sony wants one of those games to be its final game for 2009 with the other one being the first big PS3 game for 2010.
So, maybe their fates are intertwined.
Whenever it releases I'll be psyched!
96 tracks? That would be amazing! The more tracks the better!
The "make your track" part is not believable though.
GT5 is my dream title. I still drool when I boot up Prologue and can't even imagine when we get the Finished product how amazing it will be. Again another PS3 Exclusive which will raise the bar substantially higher than anything seen on PC and Xbox. Race Pro and Forza series for 360 will end up collecting dust for me once GT5 is released. Nothing comes close to simulating realism, physics, sound, and graphics that the GT series replicates. Poliphony Digital are the masters.
So much arsenal under Sony's belt with the exclusive roundup we are going to be blessed with this year and the next. Microsoft has really nothing for this year. Oh I forgot< Halo Wars and MAYBE Alan Wake. Not sure about Forza 3. Microsofts Well is drying up big time for 2009.
96 tracks, is that 96 unique course?
Could it just as easily be 24 unique courses with an alternate version of each and a reverse version of the original and alternate?
600 cars sounds right though, when you consider how many GT4 came with.
Not sure what to make of the 'make your own course' bit. I don't see that, you can't possibly take a corner or straight from one course and add it to bits of others and come up with a coherent design that plays well. The only way this could work is if you could design your course and select an environment type and have the game pre-generate a course model from that. But it wouldn't even be close on the level of detail offered by the real courses. If they *did* do it though, it would be an amazing addition to online play.

That sounds more likely.
Oh, I have a bonaaaarrr. Yes, I have a bonnnaaar. Arno-man wish he was alone-aahh. =)
Heck Arnold , I didn't know you knew french too.
Bone Jerke! LMAO
GT5….god I've waited for you for so long. Preordered as soon as I can. I tell you what though, if this sucker goes live on Dec 1st, Sony should seriously consider a price cut to coincide with it. $100 price cut + GT5 = Instant phenomenon.
Morne
I don't think that is necessary Mornelithe. GT5 will be a huge system seller in itself, it has been for the previous four titles. Sony need to cut the price of the ps3 in June or July, after the release of Infamous – which I think is going to be brilliant btw.
@ Ophidian – To be honest, I don't think it is either, however, a price cut would make vastly more sense for GT5, or God of War 3, than InFamous. GT5/GoW are tried and true franchises, that sell in the millions EASILY. Whereas, nobody knows exactly what InFamous is going to do, especially with it launching so closely to a relatively similar sand-box game, in the way of Prototype.
As I said though, if they do decide to drop prices this year, then I'm betting it'll be when GT5 launches, and just before the holidays. Imo, there's nothing in the world that would stop Sony from steam-rolling the competition then.

OMG!…i am so tired of this waiting…OMG!…if this is real…
December 2009 ohh! my december!
Please PD hurry!
Ben, I don't suppose there is any way you could find that Forza vs. GT post you wrote a few months back? I need to copy it and save it for every time some idiot says Forza is "better" or "more realistic."
-Arvis
Just say Forza's a arcade game with PS2 graphics upscaled in HD
Hey Ben,i think i saw ya Infiniti in reality just recently,a black one,i must say it's AWESOME,now those images on the web look dumb compared to real life.Bet you want it in GT5.
Wow, 96 tracks would be incredible! I love GT5p, I still play it regularly. I even invested in a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel, and it just adds so much to the experience. Anyone that love racing should definitely buy a wheel, it's like driving a real car, or pretty damn close at least!
Ben – typo – "clinch", not 'cinch'
it's alright though – you're allowed one every so often 😉
96 tracks and a track editor? It just seems too good to be true. I'm not getting my hopes up.
No, I meant "cinch." Guess it could be either. 🙂
I still think it would release in December .
A track Editor is like an dream come true but if it never happens it would be the darkest day
i hope GT5 will allow you to play the music off the XMB during the game
i hate how they make it mandatory to have in game XMB, but u can't play music!!!
granted it isnt necessary in some games, but its nice to have the option
I couldn't agree more
Seriously, racing game with great music is the best thing one can ask for
Really hope they add this
Custom soundtrack should not be a mandatory feature for games. First of all doing so has the immediate effect of reducing the amount of memory available to the programmer since you have to link in the Sony SPI/libraries that support custom soundtracks. The second impact of making it mandatory is that in very many games the music is there to help create the mood of the game, it's not simply an optional extra. Somehow I don't see Players in Uncharted having quite the same thrill if every climactic moment in the game is accompanied by some little pop ditty, it's a buzz kill.
Leaving this optional allows game designers to include it if they think it's worth including – in other words they get to make the artistic decision regarding the sound in their game.
No doubt most sports and racing titles in future will allow custom sound.
i agree 100%
the fact that nobody includes being able to play music from in-game XMB is really starting to aggravate me… even if they include this though, dont expect to be able to have a crappy soundtrack and then say "well just go put on some music from your hdd"
the music on my HDD isnt meant to race to.

@ highlander
i didn't say that is was necessary for ALL games
but it would still be cool to listen to have the ability to, say for instance listen to some cool rock music while playin FF 13
and if a cutscene comes up, you can hit the PS button and just turn off the music thats playing
(but if the game allows, then just pause it first then turn off the music)
it would just be a nice feature that i'm sure alot of people would like to have
A track editor? Hmmm… With the game being so detailed with 96 different tracks, I don't even know it a track editor would be needed or even possible.
I'd be happy if it was just a remade full ps3 version of Gran Turismo 2. Just release the damn thing!!!!!!
So it's getting less cars (or this time they're not counting variations) and more tracks!!??
Sweeeet nonetheless.
I doubt GOW III will be a system seller. It'll be a system seller when PS3 just launched. The hardcore gamers probably are the early adopters. If they wanted one they would've gotten one.
GT5 on the other hand, i think it has a better chance of selling PS3. It appeals to hardcore/casual gamers, because it can be played with an accessory. Let's hope Sony lower the price at the right time to give these casual gamers even more incentive to purchase one.
I don't really care what system sells more, but i only care about the sales because more sales = more exclusives = better games.
Gran Turismo 5 is the most important exclusive franchise that Sony has. It will sell lots of copies and move hardware. Although I would like this game to come out in the 1st half of next year so that I have enough time to enjoy Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, and Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time this winter.
Day one purchased!
This game would be a bit sweeter with a logitech
G25 wheel. The six speed leather shifter
along with clutch peddle is very cool.
Uncharted 2 and GT5 are the two game i am looking forward to most right now and i would be ecstatic if i could play GT5 this year. There is no game that can compare to GT5.
I read somewhere once that car damage will be released after the game in a download form or something. They wanted to get teh game out as quickly as possible, but they are also perfectionists and want the damage to be as realistic as possible.
Give me 3D enviroment, not these flat trees…
The release date? As soon as it wil be ready. I want it PERFECT! 🙂
Im looking forward to buying gt5.
it wont be 2010 because of an interview done with IGN.
and they hinted at a 2010 release and the guy started laughing saying it hasent been in development for that long thinking IGN was complaining.
than said no it will be released in 2009.
so im thinking october arround then.
