We're feverishly working to bring you the first set of reviews concerning three PS3 launch titles, and because you know you can't go without, here are our initial impressions of those three.
Resistance: Fall of Man
It's easily the PS3's flagship title, and will certainly be our first review. For now, we're a bit surprised that the visuals don't quite match up to expectations, and the AI isn't quite as "amazing" as Insomniac wanted us to believe. But so far, those are only very minor complaints (the AI is actually not terrible), and we can tell you one thing with every possible confidence- this game is fun . There are tons of weapons, a fantastic atmosphere, and superb control. No, the Sixaxis isn't the best controller for FPSs, but once you get used to the light-as-a-feather heft and the ultra-sensitive analogs, you're good to go.
Regardless of the final score, it's absolutely a must-play and must-own for all current and prospective PlayStation 3 owners.
Ridge Racer 7
RR hasn't changed all that much over the years, but this one does sport some pretty nifty enhancements. Again, though, the graphics just aren't on par with our expectations, but it's still a very pretty racer. It's smooth and fast, and each and every race (so far) has been both entertaining and competitive. We have to go a little further to fully examine opponent AI, the variety and complexity of courses, and the overall depth, but it's shaping up nicely.
It may not be worthy of an "elite" next-gen title, but at this point, we'll certainly label it a solid title. It may not be a "must-buy," but behind Resistance , it should be your second purchase consideration.
Call of Duty 3
As far as we can tell, it's just about identical to the Xbox 360 version, but we've seen a few small extra positives. However way you look at it, though, this franchise never fails to deliver, and CoD 3 is just a blast. It doesn't have the ingenuity and polish of Resistance but it does present one of the most enjoyable FPS experiences currently available. It's not a make-or-break launch title for the PS3 simply because it's multiplatform, but if you've never played CoD 3, it should definitely be on your list.
Once we've conquered these and delivered the reviews, we'll move forward with Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom , Genji: Days of the Blade , and Sega Golf Club . We'll do what we can to tackle all the exclusive PS3 titles first, so make sure to keep checking back throughout the holiday season.
