Tim Schafer recently said that gamers often worry too much about sales , and that if you make a great game, publishers will still want to talk to you. In other words, quality doesn't go unnoticed.
This somewhat idealistic sentiment applies to Sega's excellent RPG, Valkyria Chronicles . It may not have sold a trillion copies but its popularity is still gaining steam to this day, and next week, North American and European fans will be treated to the first three pieces of downloadable content . That being said, how's about more good news, VC lovers? According to a recent interview in the latest Famitsu edition, producer Nonaka Ryutaro said he was "ecstatic" about the game's success in Japan and that he absolutely wants to do a sequel. He said very specifically he doesn't want to leave the IP as is, and he wants to allow the game to grow into a successful franchise. This makes all of us who are well aware of VC's inherent quality very happy, although we're a little worried that a sequel may not release in either the U.S. or Europe. After all, he did only mention Japan in the interview but then again, it was a Japanese magazine, so… Let's just hope that the sales of Chronicles in the other two major regions weren't too terrible, and they'll treat us all to another installment.
We'll let you know as soon as Sega issues any details concerning Valkyria Chronicles 2 ; we'd like to think that if it does happen, the announcement will come at the Tokyo Game Show this fall. Stay tuned!
Related Game(s): Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles is still one of my top 5 favorite PS3 games and after looking at the anime today, I would love to see a VC2 come our way.
There is a god! And he is Japanese!
If all goes well I'll be picking up VC tomorrow 😀
same here! =)
Neither of you will regret it, it's a wonderful game.
World, you know how much I love this game. You will not regret your decision, either of you.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I would love nothing more than VC2. It is such a beautiful game.
Just watched the first episode of Valkyria Chronicles anime! Its fantastic. The story follows the games but not entirely. They have the same japanese voices and music as the game. Although you need to get used to the new Alicia look. (By the way… supporting anti-piracy 100%)
😀
Once the anime ends, i bet theres gonna be a huge spike in the sales of the game. I'm not surprised thats the reason Sega is so confident on a sequel so early. cant wait for VC2! YES!
What, did they give Alicia bigger boobs and make her fight naked when she is in *spoiler*? =D
Those Japanese are sick.

I still can't find this game anywhere in Canada. Ben at one point I could have sworn you said they are going to re-release this game, because it was under looked. Was it this game or something else you were talking about?

Damn you're right! What was I looking at?? Still, you're not going to pay 65-70 for it will you? I can't do it. I'd like to get it, but it's too expensive and there's no trophies…
I have never been to a gaming store and not seen it. I live in Canada (Ontario) and it is currently at my local Best Buy (I went there last week and there was 2 or 3 copies.) Also, it is at EB games for sureee.
I even saw it in BC, if that is where you are. 🙂
I hope you find it, because it is one of my favourite games.

VC is one of my all time favorite games. I don't understand why this game didn't sell more, unless you really hate strategy games it's a must buy for PS3 owners. I really hope VC2 comes to the states.
Great game, and it's already becoming a franchise of sorts. I've seen the first episode of the anime and it was actually pretty decent. Usually I'm not too fond of game to anime conversions.
I'm really curious about more complete sales numbers in the US. We've all heard about its terrible first month (well, half month really given when it was released), but I haven't seen anything concrete about how its done since then. Has word-of-mouth helped this title at all?
I'm thinking of spreading rumors that it has Trophy support.
Its just that when I read on a lot of sites the "No Trophies, No Buy" for being there reason for not buying this game. It just fuels me with a rage that has the intensity of a thousand suns.
Ya, trophies are OK, but some times they seem silly. It's like playing a game just to get trophies is kinda of a waste of time. I've been know to do it, but I sometimes stop and think….what am I doing. The trophy is like "shoot 100 enemies in the balls" So I'm shooting guys in the balls for three hours. Then I think…this is retarded. I like them when they come in the flow of the game or they help me find secrets. It would be cool it you got something for them. Like a 5$ credit at the PS store if you get to level ?.
Indeed. I just don't understand people who say no trophies, no buy. Trophies are a nice to have, but they do not alter the game in any way, a good game with trophies is a good game, and a bad game with trophies is still a bad game. People should buy a game because they like the game, not because it has trophies.
Yes, I've been doing the same actually to try and get some more people to get it. I really don't see the worth of virtual pats on the ass that are pretty much worthless after the initial self gratification.
Actually VC will be a long successful series in Japan. When VC4 comes out they will port it to North America and renumber it VC2. Then VC6 will come out as VC3 and VC7 will be brought to us as VC7. That's how we do our numbers here.
@ Oyahiro – No trophies, no buy.
Wait for onegoddamn minute…
Sega-Enix?

S-E = Sega Enix … lol nice one
I think Sega should really push the anime here to garner more interest in VC. God knows what having it streamed off their website/having it on a TV network would boost sales, or go the Gonzo route, and authorize Crunchy Roll to stream fansubs of it with the game ad before the episodes.
Oh please Oh please make a sequel and release it outside of Japan! I got the game about 2 weeks ago and I almost can't put it down! Really great game!
Simply? Yes.
trophies are just add ons I brought this game in december of last year but I haven't finish it yet. Im playing to many games.
Yeah right! Admit it, the other games you're playing have trophy support and that's why they're coming first.
this is great news! Valkryria Chronicles 2 would be awesome, bring it on Sega you rule!
everyone loves Vyse!

I read many praising reviews about Valkyria Chronicles and was really impressed and excited about it. But of course I don't have a PS3 yet so I couldn't really buy it – but I will once I do get my hands on a PS3.
But that's great that they're interested in making a sequel and that the sales didn't discourage them. I mean heck it was one of the first JRPGs on the PS3 wasn't it? I am surprised as to why more people didn't get it. Well…actually I'm not. The only reason why Valkyria Chronicles did poorly was due to the other games coming out around its time. It faced way to heavy competition by big namers and was unfortunately left in the dust.
But yea can't wait for the sequel.
Not to mention that a lot of people (even many regulars here *stares at Scarecrow*) completely misunderstood what the game WAS and the nature of it's gameplay mechanics.
Some people had the audacity to claim that they should have just made it traditional turn-based without having ever played it. Can you imagine!? *laughs snidely*

Make it!!!
So it seems that, for now, Sega >> Square Enix. Huh… never thought I would say that… or type it, as it were.
-Arvis
Oh very much so, indeed yes.
SEGA >> SquEnix.
Go to IGN and have a look at the library (yes LIBRARY) of upcoming (2009/2010) games from SEGA, it truly dwarfs the schedule coming out of SquEnix.
You're really well spoken for someone who's put up a big-breasted anime chick for an avatar. Not to stereotype you or anything…
That is a very distracting avatar, just so you know. Less annoying than that other dude's, though…
-Arvis
Hey, at least it isn't HUGEBANNERDUDE!
@Arvis
Ah, my avatar? It's the outcome of enjoying mostly silly anime (e.g. Hand Maid May) and haveing loved the Xnoesaga series of games. that avatar isn't a character from either, but it's close to Kos-Mos from Xenosaga in appearance but obviously has a slightly different costume. Sort of Kos-Mos on her day off so to speak.
I'll flip the avatar image to one of KosMos, I wouldn't want the cleavage to distract…
😉
Blast, I wasn't able to get it today. Oh well, I can wait, still got a backlog to beat.
Don't wait to long, I'm pretty sure this game will never get another printing and its all ready getting hard to find in some areas. I have a feeling this game will become rare and expensive some day.
Doooooo000Od!
Don't wait. Get it now!
Can't get the good price anymore 🙁
Valkyria Chronicles deserved a sequel. I enjoyed its story and gameplay when I played it. If the sequel comes, i'm sure that i'm gonna buy it!!
Won't it feel weird getting trophies in VC2 and then have people who have no clue ask you why you didn't play the first one?
Why do you love trophies so much?
Trophies/Achievements are the worst thing to happen to console gaming, that and the addition of the HDD giving developers excuses to ship unfinished games.
If you need incentive to play a game. Then maybe games are not for you.
I remember back in the day, People use to play games to have fun. Now its just a competition to get the biggest E-Peen…
I friggen love this game!!! People treated this game like Shadow of the Colossus, such a shame. Sorry it's not the newest Final Fantasy game but in my opinion and a handful of others, it is just amazing.
