Square-Enix Producer Kitase Hints At FFVII Remake

'sigh' Your hopes are about ready to rise once again, but don't blame us if they all come crashing down for the umpteenth time.

It may be the longest-running and most popular rumor in the history of video games: a next-gen remake for Final Fantasy VII . But every time we thought we saw new evidence for it, Square-Enix would step forward and say, quite clearly, that no such project is in the works. It has happened time and time again, and we've long since laid the whole fiasco to rest…or so we thought. Check out this OPM UK magazine scan and look at the bottom right. If you don't feel like clicking the link (maybe you're at work or something and don't want to take the risk, even though there is no risk), we'll paste the words of interest right here, straight from FF producer Yoshinori Kitase:

"[For the Final Fantasy VII remake, I can say,] it's a game I've lived with for over ten years, and my emotional ties to it are very strong. So if it were to happen then obviously there would be a lot of thought and work put into it."

Here we go again. Of course, this comment has already sparked a wave of discussion across the Internet, and some are hoping for an actual announcement at the Tokyo Game Show later this year. We can't even begin to list all the reasons Square-Enix has given in the past for why a remake would be unlikely or even impossible, but who knows? Times change, and situations can change even faster in this industry. We'll reluctantly keep a close eye on this but…well, we don't want our hearts broken any more than the rest of you. 'braces'

F*ck Yes!!!

And right after he said all this he said off the record that they were in control of the Duke Nukem Forever project and it was just about to wrap up.

I seemed really out of place on that page. Oh well.

As far as the remake rumor goes, I wont believe anything until S-E has an official press confrence saying it will happen. Dont cross your fingers.

I swear if it IS true they by god better not say its xbox 360 exclusive that will make me NEVER buy another square enix product again. On another note i hope they do make a FFVII remake if we're lucky it'll be a PS3 exclusive if not it'll go multi probably it would be awesome.

I would be incredibly shock if it went to the ps3 as an exclusive or as multiplatform.

I've heard this news for years and years now… and I have one thing to say

FFVII has been in production for years – ever since S-E had their FFVII introduction out… they just won't announce the remake until they are almost done… chances are it'll be multi-system

Otherwise – my 2nd and lesser thought… they like to play with our emotions

i rly hope this doesnt happen until like, the ps9. honestly, the game, for all intents and purposes.. JUST came out. whats it been? 12 years? should they remake the matrix movies in a few summers? the lord of the ring trilogy?

the point of a remake shouldnt be to update the graphics, it should be to introduce a franchise to a sector of people of which the MAJORITY of whom have never experienced said product.

if ff7 gets remade now, what are they going to do in 10 years when graphics are infinitely better on a system 2 gens higher than these? remake the game AGAIN?

When has Square Enix NOT jerked with the sony fans emotions? lol and at JohnnyGold sure they can update the graphics again if they see fit. 😛

1: This comment pretty much doesn't hint at a remake at all.
2: It'll probably be multi-plat (which I'm not objecting to, so long as it comes out for PS3)
3: If it DOES happen, epic happy lol.

I just don't want them to include all of the extra story elements introduced with the other games in the compilation. I hated Genesis, he was stupid, same for all of DoC. It needs to be a direct remake of FFVII. And I also believe the project should be headed by Nomura. He is the only reason I even play any SE games anymore. Say what you will about "Zippers and Belts", He has proved himself that he is the only competent person in SE right now.

This is just another "If it ever happened" thing, which means it isn't going to. What I don't understand about it though is this:

Since SE has obviously dumped their old philosophy of quality games ahead of money and opted for the quick cash instead, why not do this? It would make more money than every Final Fantasy combined.

Lol. The story is in place, so they wouldnt need story board people, they would just need graphic artists for the most part. They might want to change the battle system to something newer and fresh perhaps like the Crisis Core system, but idk how that would work with 3 party members. I wouldnt want a carbon copy with shiny graphics, but i wouldnt want them to deviate too far. Well see if this even comes close to happening first.

I still think there was a bunch of loose ends in FFVII that could easily be picked up without taking the game outside its original plot. I doubt they'd just shine it up if this was ever done.

In that article im just happy to know that the US version of FFXIII is released in 6 months after japanese version. Hope this means that it didnt get delayed by xbox version.

Praying the 6 month expectations doesnt mean that they designed the PS3 with xbox in mind

i know that super die hard fans of FF VII are gonna hate me for suggesting this….

but i think that if they do remake it, then it should go more in depth of the happenings in crisis core

i like having a more in depth back story
which is why i loved crisis core so much

Oyashiro
Oyashiro

The reason that they should not add the extra event of Crisis Core is that there is no need, nor room for them.

FFVII story hinges on the fact that everything you know about Clouds past is [Spoiler]False or inaccurate. The only thing you find out is that Cloud was not a First Class soldier, It was Zack a along that he thought he was. Genesis and Angel are insignificant to FFVII, Sephiroth was the only one significant to Cloud. [spoiler]

If they where to add all that in, that would have to force it in and change the story considerably. Much like what DoC tried to do by discrediting major plot point from FFVII to make its own story work.

Abidan13

It's true some portions would definitely ruin it. But to add certain elements to it after the surprising twists, it could work or beautifully.. or blow up in their faces.
I think they should add an epilogue with portions from the novellas that were released (limited).

Oyashiro

Adding a more complete epilogue would be nice. I reworked script is a must. I'm all for adding extra content (More Weapons to fight would be sweet).

More weapons would be awesome. I would really like the system for Advent Children with interchangeable and interlocking swords with First Tsurugi. That was a great idea.

i think there is a need for the backstory of zack because he was a pivotal part of the FF VII story

think about it

without zack, who would've saved cloud from those experiments???
where would cloud get all those memories of being in SOLDIER and where would he get the buster sword??

granted, angeal and genesis weren't very important from cloud's standpoint but they were very important for zack and to a certain degree sephiroth

but i do agree that it would be nice to have a more solid epilogue

I love FFVII. My favourite game of all time and I love it as is. However, I would be interested to see if they can pull it off. If it's terrible, it wont affect my PSone version. However, if its great, they have done the impossible and improved upon what was once considered perfection, the epitome of gaming.

I also have no problem with a bit of deviation. I wouldn't mind incorporating a bit of Crisis Core or On a Way to a Smile, etc. In fact, I encourage it. What a way to get the whole story out to all fans of both the old and new generations.

lol. While they're at it, include the last portion of the story. True, Genesis wasn't the best idea for a villain but finish what you have started Square-Enix.

You are playing with emotional terrorism. We are addicts of your products, yet you dangle little pieces of illusions in front of us hoping to spark something, anything…then do nothing but watch us in agony. If you really are going to do something along the lines of a remake, just say it. If not, STOP BRINGING IT UP!!!! …I think I just died a little on the inside. How much more can we really take before we breakdown, abandoning those who gave us that idyllic work we all know as Final Fantasy VII?

Im pretty sure im alone in this opinion but i want them to make a remake of FF7 with alotta added content (Weapons Bosses maybe a new hidden character or rwo etc) then I want them to make 1 final game in the FF7 that takes place after Dirge of Cerberus and uses FF13 Battle System (or something like it) and make it long and Epic (imagine a FF on 2 Bluray discs) but im pretty sure the latter wouldnt happen

i'd love to have an FF X remake!!

a prequel would be nice as well, but it'd be cooler to instead include it in the remake itself….

like when you find out about all the stuff about sin and jecht and all that, you actually play the past

it is a big tangent yes, but it'd be worth it

and yes a better epilogue

because the 100% perfect ending of X-2 wasn't very exciting 🙁

Please no, we learnt by FFX-2 that adding to FFX's story is a bad idea, though i am now rather tempted to go through FFX again because its brilliant. I'll be honest, by now i just dont care what they do, they can remake it and if i dont like it i'll still have the original, so be my guest.

Qwarktast1c

i'm sure that if they hadn't have made X-2 a bit differently, like to hell with dress spheres and go back to the sphere grid, it would've been better

it was nice seeing tidus come back in the "good" ending

but the "perfect" ending was far from perfect
it was kinda meh…. i was expecting a grand finale of sorts

but oh well….. FF X is still my favorite FF to this day

btw, from a business perspective, i really cant see it not happening at this point. if SE devs are getting asked in every interview about it… if every message board on the internet is asking for it… if they know they have a guaranteed blockbuster in their hands…

its only a question of when, not if.

now, that when might not be for 20 years. but itll happen.

Every single one of you is going to hate me, but WHY? I've never played a Final Fantsy game, mainly because I'm not a huge fan of RPG's, but isn't 13 main games, plus all the little add ons (Crisis Core etc.) a little OTT? Surely if every fan is going to keep asking for the games, then the dev's are going to run out of ideas to put in them??

Soultaker

The FF series is a gold mine and people usually love the stories that form the game or at least that's what I like about it and the battle systems are interesting to because it seems like in each game there is a variation to it in each FF lol

AnonymousPoster

Aren't the dozens of WWII shooters made every single year a bit OTT? Those come and are then forgotten, but each FF game is always remembered as a unique accomplishment. Every one of them [usually] represents the absolute pinnacle of RPG game design during the time it's produced. Don't slam something you've never tried.

That said, I don't think this is happening, either. He was asked a question about it, and responded with, "IF it were to happen…" I could tell you what I might do IF I were going to kill the president, but that doesn't mean I'm going to do it.

Dude if someone hates you for not playing a series they are dumb, that said its worth a play even if you arent into RPGs, 13 of them isn't over the top because every iteration is a completely different universe (except for X-2) with all different characters and a new plot. So you can't think of it as like "Well there's been 13 of them now, time to let it rest" since every game is diff. Hope that helps.

Do people really want an FFVII remake more than a new fresh Final Fantasy Versus XIII developed exclusively for the Playstation 3? I mean really…FFVII was great and all…but I frankly think it's best if we leave it as a memory of the days way back then when we had so much fun with the JRPG on the PSX. I frankly never played it…I only played FFVII: Crisis Core – so it should help me out since it's a prequel.

But really…FFVII was a dominating experience on PSX, but why wouldn't we all want FF Versus XIII – it just looks so freaking sick. The third trailer that came out for it is so so epic. I really can't wait to get my hands on it. The third trailer shows so much emotion, gives you a taste of what the story would be like, the awesome music, awesome environment, friends and foes, and REAL TIME FOOTAGE…(at the very end of the trailer where Noctis meets Stella).

Gosh I just can't wait for Final Fantasy Versus XIII…but that won't happen until hopefully early 2011. Gosh…and this game was announced 2006? Lol…oh well. I want them to take their time to make it one awesome Final Fantasy.

But hey if they are coming out with an FFVII remake…bring it and take your time on it…or just screw us over and rush it and just make the most amount of money you can. (sarcasm)

Nope. Reliving the amazing FFVII experience in a new, more immersive way (i.e. voice over, realistic-looking characters and settings, etc) is a Final Fantasy fan's dream come true. You can't reason that away.

Yeah, can't we have both? Just retool the FFXIII battle engine and away we go. The regular XIII team will be free to work on something after the localization is done and they take a much needed vacation.
