Konami Reveals Six Days In Fallujah

There have been a ton of war games over the years, but this will be the first one that tackles the most recent wartime events.

According to the LA Times , Konami has announced Six Days in Fallujah , a game that focuses on the Iraqi town where 38 U.S. troops and around 1,200 insurgents lost their lives. The idea came from a video filmed by U.S. Marines upon their return home, and it's a sign of the times that, instead of contacting a movie studio, they got in touch with a game studio: Atomic Games. The Raleigh-based company specializes in making combat simulation software for the military, so it seems like a perfectly logical move. And as the article says, "today's warriors are more likely to pick up a game controller than a paperback." Said Mike Ergo, a U.S. Marine who was actually in Fallujah and is a consultant for the game:

"Video games can communicate the intensity and the gravity of war to an audience who wouldn't necessarily be watching the History Channel or reading about this in the classroom. In an age when everyone's always online or playing games, people's imaginations aren't what they were, sadly. For this group, books may not convey the same level of intensity and chaos of war that a game can."

Obviously, the player will assume the role of a Marine in Fallujah when everything went to hell, and we'll get to experience the realistic intensity of the battle. Atomic Games will also include the actual guns and explosives the troops used, so you can bet it'll be accurate to call Six Days in Fallujah a simulator. You can learn a lot more about it if you visit the Times link above; we'll bring you more details when they become available.

I'm from Iraq myself and I really hope it doesn't get very controversial. Fallujah is a bad town though, I can tell you that myself.

I am hopeful this is done correctly, and more importantly respectful to the 38 American servicemen who lost their lives while fighting the terrorists.

Ughhhh they weren't Terrorists, at the time, Mr. I-live-under-a-rock, they were the Iraqi National army. The same former Iraqi national army that now makes up the bulk of the Insurgency in Iraq.

Before the Comment section explodes, everyone needs to bear in mind that we WON'T be tolerating off-topic arguments on very sensitive topics. We'd normally recommend that such arguments go to the forums, but we'd rather not have this anywhere on the site. Too combustible.

Agreed, but I think most forumites could handle it. You might be busy with the editing tonight here though.

Okay, its official! FPSs are going mainstream "pastic hollywood style". Way to kill the fun in video games for us, Konami! Personally, I don't see myself buying this. But that's just neutral me.

My only hope, and since this is being driven by Konami I am not too concerned, is that this doesn't turn into an American propaganda machine like "America's Army" were the AI is impossibly dumb and "America is #1" no matter what, although they did say they wanted to capture the western market. Don't get me wrong I don't hate America but I do hate this whole "we are indestructible and always right" attitude and I just hope those sentiments stay out of this game and it is just a realistic shooter.

That attitude went away with the previous administration.

I hope game controls won't be an issue. MGS series excluded; Konami hasn't really had the best control schemes for their games and normally is the killer for me.

I'll keep an eye on this one, the basis seems very compelling.

I did a bit of a double-take when I saw the title of this game. Talk about poor taste, they could've chosen any other city or battle to set a game in the Iraq invasion period but Fallujah is generally classified as the Iraq war's Saigon; basically a massacre of Iraqi civillians at the hands of Marines who, to be fair, were following orders but even the US military basically apologized for the event several months later and acknowledged it was basically a free-for-all bloodbath. There was a very accurate film depicting these events, I'd recommend that for anyone who wants to relive the experience.

I'm not anti-US or anti-anything really, just stating the facts and not trying to incite political commentary. I'm merely pointing out this particular game I feel is a bad choice.

Could be, but like films, maybe what they really want to do is tell the true story, people are assuming this will be a typical glorification of war game like call of duty or something but that's not necessarily the case.

I just want the unplugged music made available as DLC! Today please…

First off people will be upset about this title mainly because it hits home for so many people. If you'd like to read an excellent take on the opposing view I suggest following this link:

http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/04/08/gamer-war-vet-fears-six-days-fallujah-will-dishonor-those-who-served-iraq

It's written by an Iraq war vet who loves to game.

By the way, "World Ends With Me", Obama disarming America during a time of war to spread the wealth is probably not a good idea…

What up moderator? Was something wrong with my commment? Just wondering…

Was it the link to a well written complaint about this game by a Gamer/Iraq war Vet?

Was it bashing Obama and WorldEndsWithMe?

Or was it because, even though these comments weren't supposed to be political, you've let any anti-war/anti-american post go by and won't put up with an opposing view point out of fear?

Or was it simply a system error in this eternal Beta?

What a can of worms this "game" is opening up. I empathize with people from both sides of the conflict that have direct experience with the violence. On the one hand, games can really be more than that, like a film, they can be art and make serious comments on life and history, so presuming that should they should only deal with alien invasions and what not, is an attitude that will hold them back from reaching their true potential. I thought COD4 was actually a pretty tasteful take on this very controversial subject, though this came game is dealing with a much more specific set of events that are still quite recent, and consequently the subject is more raw. We can only hope that the developers deal with this subject with integrity and sensitivity.
