There was a time when the idea of "downloadable content" seemed both silly and magical. And while many old-school RPG fans will simply say, "eh, we don't need DLC," it may be disappointing to learn that Final Fantasy XIII may be without extra content.
According to the unofficial FFXIII site , the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine has some new info on the hotly anticipated RPG. First off, it says the developers have completed the Story campaign and the graphics are "around 80% complete." As of now, they're working on honing and refining the game's combat mechanic, and that any screenshots or videos you've seen thus far are all from "older builds of the game," and they've gone past that point now. But when asked about possible downloadable content for the game, they said there aren't currently any such plans. Some may call this a step backwards, especially considering the apparent need for DLC in this new generation; gamers have already gotten used to the concept of extra goodies soon after a title releases. But it doesn't appear as if Square-Enix will indulge you.
For our part, we don't need DLC for FFXIII. It might be nice, but we really don't want developers to get to the point where they can rely on DLC to make a game better…we want the game to be as awesome as humanly possible when it launches. Like in the old days. Plain and simple. FFXIII, if you've forgotten, is still on track to launch later this year in Japan, but of course, we lowly North American fans have to wait longer. Stay tuned for more.
good to know that its almost complete
i cant wait to get my hands on it =)
It's Final Fantasy. When has the series ever needed downloadable content?
I am 100% cool with the idea of no DLC for an RPG. I can understand multiplayer games for new maps and whatnot but it really isnt neccessary for an RPG. The last thing I want is to finish the game only to find out I need to wait for (or worse pay for) a proper ending.
It also means no exclusive DLC which is great, seeing as how us PS3 owners always get left out in the cold
I agree with you completely. This is not the kind of game that would warrant any DLC.
As I'm sure it's been said several times, multiplayer games and games where not everything works as an interconnected whole (like racing games) can benefit from DLC, but an RPG better include the whole game, or people will NOT be happy.
Well, just cuz they aren't planning any now does not mean we won't get any. Although, I dunno how I feel about that, I mean …there is nothing wrong with it, if you don't want it, don't buy it. But when the time comes and I've done everything I can do in FFXIII, I'm damned sure i'll want some DLC.
Glad to see they are coming along nicely and that it's almost complete. I hope there are plenty of secrets and side missions to complete, end game and throughout. That's the main thing that keeps me playing (and even going through it a second time) extra goodies. I did not like FFXII which was very depressing, but it did have a lot of extra things to do and collect on the side. FFX however, was awesome (i'm going through it now actually) and had plenty to do after the story is long over.
Hmm … I wonder what the trophies are going to be like
I honestly don't want anymore info about this game until about 3 months before it's u.s. release, though i might be able to take all the Versus info if Nomura-San gave some:P
No DLC FANTASTIC!!!!!!
Might be one game this gen we wont be con'd with for extra payemnts after paying for the blu-ray disc.
That's great DLC is okay if it's like an expansion pack like Oblivion
Other than FFXI, FF has never needed DLC and I'm completely happy knowing that there isn't any planned.
Its pretty good for us ps3 owners this game not having DLC.
IMO SE would be more than happy to pull out additional content for MS console, but they CANT do it with this title because FFXIII is exclusive to the PS3 in Japan and it doesnt make sense to produce DLC for only "TEH western market", leaving their Japanese fanbase out in the cold.

I'm certain FFXIII has got more pre-release articles than any game in history
"Any screenshots or videos you've seen thus far are all from "older builds of the game," and they've gone past that point now."
Yeah. Riiiiiiiight.
I'm not an rpg fan myself, but maybe they are focusing on the game before deciding how to rape…er…add value to the customer. If you ask me, I'd rather have the option of DLC than not.
thats a GOOD thing to be doing.
would you rather have a developer have the idea of "okay guys, lets hurry up and get this game out of the pipeline, so that we can start making DLC for it"
This is why some people play console games over PC games: they are complete WHEN they launch.
If people really want DLC, FFXIII may have already been out. It just would have not been entirely complete, and later Square-Enix would release the rest of the games with DLC. That would be so much more enticing, wouldn't it?
But PC games give you the ability to mod and extend the play experience more than a console game ever could.
Yeah they should leave DLC out of FFXIII. That way there is no way any one console gets screwed; because we know that they wold probably take payment for exclusive DLC. Oh, did anyone read that article on Gamepro this past week from GDC were some pr form Microsoft said that FFXIII on 360 will outsell the PS3 version?
Yes, I am thinking that microsoft and Square Enix have something planned out for the 360 version that is going to make it more especial than the ps3 version so people would go get the 360 copy.
when you say the graphics are "about 80% complete", does that mean they are not fully textured and running at full speed or does it mean they only have something to show for 80% of the game?
no doubt Australia will get this last, probably early 2011 or something…
Don't they dare require DLC to be perfect, games like that are ****.
Mind if I ask what is the size of a DLC usually?
DownLoadable Content can be any range of data size, from 10mb to a couple gigs.
Well its good to see them staying true to the old traditional non DLC way of making games I don't need DLC for every game I purchase didn't need it before and I won't make it a habit of paying for extra content either. unless its something I really want

I'm completely fine with no DLC. Just give me the game, and I'll be happy. :]
Is there any chance left that this game might come our way this year? Or is it a sure thing that it won't till sometime in 2010?
you know, if enix really wants to appeal to western gamers, they could start by treating us like we're just as important as the japanese market, and mandate simultaneous world-wide releases within the company.
i'll take simultaneous releases over not releasing any games on my system any day.
Thanks for saying "world-wide releases" .
i would never leave out our buddies across the pond, they often feel even more obscure than we yankees do, and i feel for you/them ^_^
luckily they don't have any DLC, because I don't want to spend like say 80 bucks for the collectors edition have still have to fork out 5.99 for some xtra costumes, or harder mode. Please just put it all in the BLURAY, isn't the space needed so it can do ALL that?
After this game, i will not be looking forward to FFXIV… The wait is just too long to be worth it. I bet the next game will be 5-7 years of wait. I probably quit gaming by then.
You know, I've yet to purchase a DLC add-on for a single game. I've purchased complete games that were downloadable (like Flower), but these little add-ons they want to nickle and dime you for seem like a complete rip-off to me. If I'm paying $60 for a game I want it to actually be complete.
DLC can taint a game.
@caddillac
if they're talking on the US alone, it's possible that the FFXIII version on the xbox 360 will outsell the ps3 version but on worldwide sales, it's impossible. remember, FFXIII on japan is exclusive to ps3. that reason alone is enough that the xbox 360 version of FFXIII cannot outsell the ps3 version worldwide
Hi everyone,
Reading the comments I can't help but wonder isn't the DLC the new Online issue.
I mean no more than few weeks ago Ben in his editorial explained that not all games need online and most of the commentators agreed.
And here we have a very similar case. Not all games need DLC. It makes more sense and it's easier to create a DLC for a game like Burnout (a few new missions, new car etc) or Killzone (new map and maybe a new gun).
On the other hand, games like FF and MGS or even Uncharted and Assassin's Creed are heavily story driven and by the time you finish a game the story is pretty much told and you can hardly add anything to it.
After all every FF game has some kind of DLC (extra content) already build in. After you finish the "Story" you can go on playing and beating all these extreme Ultima bosses. By the time you finish with them all you are at 99Lvl wit 99999HP and 9999MP and all the ultimate weapons. What else would you like to get to extend the life of the game – more of these bosses.
But hey, that's just my opinion.
Kind regards
Martin

We got this same announcement 6 months ago, not about DLC but the completion of the game. I'm tempted to say vaporware at this point.
DLC: Tifa's outfit for Lightning? That'd be sweet.
DLC for Final Fantasy is just retarded PERIOD!
I hate DLC, hate it, good that they wont bring it out!
Good this should mean that we'll get the complete game on day 1 which I'm happy about. Give SE some credit for not holding back portions of their game only to charge people for it latter as DLC. I'm sure that's what some game companies do and that makes me sick…
Sure go ahead and make exclusive DLC for the Xbox 360 just to attract more customer to FFXIII Xbox 360 version.
But I warn this SE, Xbox 360 uses DVD and it was cracked long time ago.
Even if there's 20 million people playing FFXIII, I bet majority will be playing the pirated ones which means less than 10 million gamers bought the original.
Look at Halo 3, it sold 9m copy but there's almost 30m 360 sold.
But Blu-Ray has yet to be cracked(or never will, but well, that's probably the reason why the PS3 isn't selling well in places with a lot of piracy especially mine…)
BD has been cracked, its the PS3 that hasn't been modded yet. Last year there was a claim that the ps3 can be tricked into thinking a full version of a game is a demo, and would play off the hard drive, but patched it out, and that claim has been stagnant since.
Then it's only a matter of time before there's gonna be a pirated PS3 games?
If history is correct, then eventually, yes, the PS3 will suffer from games piracy. But history also says that it should have been cracked by now. The ability for sony to update the firmware, and not allowing back patching has a LOT to do with their current success against Piracy.
50gb Images of BD are also still prohibitively large to obtain. Even compressed, BD Images are 0ver 30gb (I am talking images, not rips). I think the ps3 will be safe for a long time against this sort of piracy, which should be a HUGE incentive for developers.
Several of my Xbot buddies own two Xboxs at all times: one for legit purchases and online play, the other modded for playing pirated games offline. Good for MS hardware sales, I am sure.
It's good for console sale but bad for game sale if there's pirated Blu-Ray.
