Is Modern Warfare 2 A New Call Of Duty, Or A New IP?

Perhaps the biggest news that came out of GDC 09 was the unveiling of Modern Warfare 2 , which is a guaranteed blockbuster for the end of the year. But the title has got people talking…

First of all, Activision has indeed confirmed that "Modern Warfare 2" is the full title of the game; "Call of Duty" is nowhere to be found. We can understand this because "Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2" is a little confusing, but perhaps there's something else involved, here… According to GameSpot , an Activision representative said that Modern Warfare 2 "has taken on a life of its own," and Infinity Ward CEO Vince Zampella added that "Everyone on the team is laser-focused on making the most gripping experience we've ever created." That's cool and all, but what does it mean, to indicate that this title is a brand new breed? The rep wouldn't answer the question concerning the game's origins; is it indeed a sequel and part of the Call of Duty franchise, or is it a brand new IP? As we understand it, IW and Treyarch trade off on making the CoD games and if Modern Warfare 2 isn't technically the next CoD, what is? And who will make it?

Well, we can't say for certain. We do know, however, that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has sold over 12 million copies worldwide, and that's one hell of an accomplishment. Activision is now calling it "the best-selling first-person action game of all time," so either way, Modern Warfare 2 is going to have its fair share of fans right out of the gate.

Without Infinity Ward, Call of Duty will crumble. But Modern Warfare will grow and boom.

I agree, Treyarch made COD3 and COD5. COD3 had like 11 guns. Then COD4 amzingly came out and then COD5 was the same thing but had ZOMBIES!! Nice but it wasn't much of an inprovement.

Gonna be just another COD with some new maps, weapons, maybe vehicles, and graphical improvements. Not much tho as it is Multiplatform based and the crapbox is pretty much maxed out, so it has to be made so both platforms (especially 3fixme) can handle it. Thats why i'm not hot about Multiplatform games anymore because they have to keep the game at bay to be able to run on both platforms.

Could you imagine if they could be like GG (KZ2) and really push the power of PS3 to make a Call of Duty game that was Exclusive to Sony's Monster machine what greatness we could see? Sad we have to anti-up on Microcraps behalf. Oh well it's just money and business that all.

After seeing and playing KZ2 online with its killer 32 person support, an 18 player FPS that runs half decent online just doesn't get me excited anymore.

I agree with you Hoodge. Why can't there be a PS3 version and an Xbox 360 version? How come they have to make them exact?

Only using a small portion of the Blu-ray disc is ashame and a waste. If IW wants their game to really be talked about they should make different versions.

Not change the story or anything just add better visuals and more stuff going on in the background. And better particle effects. What would that hurt?

@timster118: What would that hurt? Um, let's see here.
#1, 360 fanboys would yell at the top of their lungs
#2, PS3 fanboys would feel "ALL POWERFULL!" .
#3, The developer would have to turn down Microsoft's offer to keep the games the same.
#4, The games wouldn't be the same, so why buy the 360 version if you own a PS3?
#5, The game maker wouldn't make as much money off of the 360 version, as it wouldn't sell as much.
#6, The PS3 version would have to have a higher price, like $89.99 instead of $69.99.
#7, Or, the 360 version would be lower priced, resulting in more sales than the PS3 version.
#8, The PS3 version would cost more money to make and maintain, most likely resulting in fewer updates.
#9, Sony doesn't bribe for exclusive content.
And finally,
#10, Microsoft would NEVER in a million years allow it!

That is why every cross platform game is usually the same.

(PS, I'm going to post this message again in a new thread so others can reply to me. 😀

My guess is it has something to do with Infinity Ward making it incredibly clear that they do not want their games being confused with Treyarch's. Maybe they insisted on dropping the CoD name.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the better name.

Too bad its not exclusive to the Playstation3.

Yeah, CoD:MW2 does have a nice ring to it…. who says it has to be Call of Duty 4?

Hopefully AB won't have TA work on MW since their games are DOA. IW's CEO needs to let the FB know if the new MW2 IP supports rumble on PS3's DS3 as well as trophies unlike the first MW in COD. OMG, I hope so, rumble being MIA in MW1 really stunk, IMO.

I agree with HOODGE and timster118, after playing KZ2 multiplayer, any other online experience falls short.

It shoulda been;

Call of Duty 6:World at War 2:Modern Warfare 2:Attack of the mutants.

I hope it is a new IP, because tbh, I'm getting sick of the CoD online setup. Obtaining perks and/or boring weapons doesn't do it for me anymore. Granted I did have fun with CoD5, which I thought I wouldn't, but I knew I would eventually grow tired of the online MP.. and so I did. I'm sick of it already and I'm only level 24 the first time through lol. Guess CoD4 did it to me, even though I only made it to level 46 in that game.

Killzone 2 is so much more fun. I love the constant action in that game. 5 different game types, 7 different classes.. I can't get enough!

So with all that said, I hope they bring something entirely new to the online experience for MW2 because if they take the old route, then I will give the game a rent and that's it.

I'm sure itll be great, I might get it to do the online but multiplats do worry me, at least I think we can trust Treyarch to do the best job possible.

Here are the top ten reasons why the PS3 doesn't get better cross platform games.

#1, 360 fanboys would yell at the top of their lungs

#3, The developer would have to turn down Microsoft's offer to keep the games the same.

Hey WIIplay thats why it will be only a great game, not a KZ2. Because it will be only around 8 or 9 gb in disc size as the DVD medium has a 9gb storage size. So ya great list, but could you just imagine what Exclusive COD game content on the PS3 would look like utilizing the full potential of Bluray? That's why multiplatform games will only be good or great, not jaw dropping gorgous and amazing.

That's why Microsoft is getting scared ****less, cause the tank is full for them. That's why they try to bash Sony down all the time, because they are out of muscle.

So after MW2 will it be called Call Of Duty 6 or 7 and then Modern Warfare 3 etc etc etc….

This is going the way Championship Manager and Football Manager went after they split on their different ways. I am sorry the guys that did Modern Warfare were brilliant, the guys that did Call Of Duty 5 World Of War were simply crap I would say sh1t but that is sure as hell to be deleted oh bugger I already said it, ok allegedly not as good or what not dear boy corinthian spirit in all good things what what what!

i understand why they would leave the Call of Duty series , since COD allowed treyarch to just copy their hard work and add some mods and graphics. We will soon find out if this was a good idea

As i read these comments and so on, I begin to wonder why doesnt any developer use the blueray disc to a fair of enough capacity. If IW made the PS3 using the Cell plus the added storage of blueray, it could blow the 360 project away PERIOD!

Either way Modern Warfare 2 is gonna rock! And I don't care what anyone says I really enjoyed COD:WAW. It might have been back in the second world war and all that but it was the best and most intense depiction of WW2 that I've seen. I enjoyed every moment of it.

I can understand why Infinity Ward might want to move away from the Call of Duty label. Maybe it will give them more creative freedom, and more profits in the end.

But like I said it is going to be the best MULTIPLATFORM game of the year. And I can't wait.

But in the end KZ2 made a huge mark on the gaming world and I don't think MW2 will be anything as epic as that…. Not until IW makes an exclusive for the PS3 using all the resources that GG had.

If they really wanna see :"the WAR of FPS" they must take IW and GG and give them a chance to produce an exclusive(on PS3) each and then put them up against each other.

Until that day the Modern Warfare series will be great but not the best anymore…

As taken from another source. Modern Warfar 2 is up to create a new franchise. It will never be again a part of call of duty sequel, which is developed on his own track in future.
