Curt Schilling Retires, Begins New Career In Gaming?

If you're a sports fan, you know that Curt Schilling just recently announced his retirement from Major League Baseball. He ended up having the lowest ERA in postseason history and led both the Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox to World Series titles; just about everyone remembers the bloody sock, right? Well, perhaps it would interest you to know that Curt is a pretty hardcore gamer and he has plans for his retirement…

Back in 2006, Schilling wanted to make his dream of creating a game a reality by founding 38 Studios, and he's also an avid MMO player. In fact, he has played most all MMOs since the introduction of Ultima Online , which is probably the reason why his next endeavor includes designing a MMO. Adam Sessler of G4TV sat down with Schilling and discussed a number of game topics, including Schilling's desire to get his hands into the creative and inventive side of gaming. You can view the video and check out the entire interview; as you can see, Schilling isn't just some wannabe who is done with his career and wants to try something he isn't qualified to do. He seems to know what he's talking about and he also seems determined to produce something that gamers will be interested in; a top-quality MMO of epic proportions, in fact. We just hope he doesn't forget that consoles are home to many an incoming MMO this generation. The PC is no longer the only possibility for developers as clearly evidenced by projects like MAG , The Agency and DC Universe Online , so provided Schilling doesn't make the mistake of ignoring the console gamers, we'll be excited to hear more about his project.

Baseball stars kicking off video game studios, football stars playing Madden in the locker room, Hollywood actors focusing more and more on voice acting roles…the game industry has certainly come a long way.

Sorry, off topic: I've been hearing rumors that an announcement was made at GDC that both the 360 and the PS3 are getting motion control devices a la the Wiimote.

PLEASE tell me this is typical internet crap with no basis in reality!

Again, VERY sorry this is so off-topic…

I know you appologized, but there is a place for this offtopic stuff. It's called the forums. Ben is just as involved over there as he is here. And most of the forum regulars are very knowelegable about this kind of stuff. So from now on start a topic in the forum instead of posting this kind of thing.

Actually shadow I do that too but I would have started with: Chilling is such an a**hole but I wish that his game becomes successful and it will make it's way to the console's,then I would put: Sorry, off topic: I've been hearing rumors……….

Shadow,

You are, of course, right. I'm sorry, it won't happen again. I'm just desperate for some official word that this is all just a big hoax!

P.S. Yeah, Curt Schilling… boy is he chubby.

And yes it is all a hoax, if anything even remotely official had come out of Sony or MS the intertubes would have exploded.

No way this game will come to PS3 unless it finds success on PC first.

So much for double the speed huh? This is why streaming video games won't work for awhile, they are testing these things on 100% perfect connections with nary a packet dropped. Few people actually have that kind of service.

He was an avid EQ player back in the day, when there was still a huge stigma attached to playing MMOs. Regardless of his reputation, he helped validate the gaming lifestyle for many of us MMO players by not being ashamed of it (Millions of dollars and big sports star fame probably helped)

Then WoW came out, and everyone and their dog was all like, THIS IS AWESOME I AM GONNA PLAY THIS 18 HOURS A DAY. A lot of the friends that derided me for playing EQ ended up far deep and addicted to WoW . 8 Years of EQ was enough MMO for me. I have tried WOW, but I found it a little insulting in its MMO for dummies format… just too damn easy.

Uqua… Nuff said.
