At this point, the role-playing fanatics will appreciate any small tidbit of gameplay information concerning Final Fantasy XIII .
FinalFantasyUnion has posted up a magazine scan that sheds some light on the game's Active Time Battle (ATB) system. This is a battle mechanic that has been in place for years, but the designers always tweak it significantly for each new installment in the legendary series. Here, we learn that it may be possible to chain together an unlimited number of moves at any given time, and if each skill ties into each other, the player will receive an attack bonus. There's also mention of a "pre-separator" that can break up the moves in question, which will allow you to improve the effectiveness of your chains. All of this sounds quite intriguing and we're willing to bet that FFXIII's combat mechanic will be more dynamic and intricate than any FF system before. Hopefully, when that one-hour demo hits Japan with the release of "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" on Blu-Ray, we'll see plenty of cool gameplay videos on the Internet. Japan's lucky enough to get this hotly anticipated RPG this year, but – 'sigh' – we North American gamers are gonna have to wait until 2010.
Anyway, we'll keep trying to dig up new information and details concerning FFXIII all the way up until the game's launch. …and we've got plenty of time, so stay tuned.

I'm not sure if I like the sound of this to be honest.
What is wrong with normal ATB?
Chaining attacks together, like an action game?
mmm :S
The FF battle system always changes from the next title to the other. It's familiar but still evolving and new things to dig in.
I wouldn't worry about actual command input being "too actiony." I think it's more like the actual presentation of the battles on-screen is going to flow more like an action sequence from an anime or what have you. I'm really excited about it, myself.

I'm with Robinhood, this is a bit disconcerting. I know it would be pathetic to wish for a return to turn-based but can't we have a little of that in the mix? Maybe there is some, but to be honest I'm not entirely pleased with button mashing in my RPGs. Stupid western exapansion, HOW about expanding that demo and the damned PS3 release date over to the West!?
Thanks, glad I'm not the only one!
Turn-based rpgs: If it ain't broken, what be there to fix?
ummm so are they going to have "summons" in this game or no.
i dont remember reading anything about them or seen a picture of them
Well, we HAVE seen Shiva…

and Carbuncle, and Ifrit
F.Y. Square enix.
This game better have 100+ hrs of game play.
how do u think UK feel. we always get shunned. apart form kz2 but thats it.
The fantasy is far from over!!
I wonder how many discs the 360 version will have, and if they cripple the PS3 version to make it look equal on PS3 and 360 :p

But yea, this could work out well if the actions menu is easily sortable (preferably custom sorting, so that we can pretty much chain together attacks out of combat) and doesn't show the less powerful moves.
We'll have to wait and see, I guess.
damn 360,is holding back the ps3 ……im not into rpgs, but if its anything like ffviii,i would play it ,especially considering, one of the things i never liked was the battle sequences,it was pathetic imo,so im curious to see the changes for myself…
They didn't do what I think they almost did oh god Dynasty Warriors button bashing.
Mega Man almost put me off RPGs so I mightn't bother with Final Fantasy if it's going to be limited badly because of the 360s disc `Microsoft trying to get rid of physical media´
Microsoft + Square Enix = $$$
Sony + Gaimz = <3
