Amazon Stops Wii Preorders, Passes On PS3

What do you get when you have a huge demand and a very short supply? Chaos. GameStop can't fulfill the few preorders it did take, no retailer is likely to have any PS3s available for regular sale after this weekend, and even the more acccessible Nintendo Wii is going to be tough to come by. And mega-online retailer Amazon.com wants no part of the insanity.

Amazon has opted not to take any PS3 preorders, and no further Wii preorders. Supposedly, an Amazon staffer released the news in their forums; the statement read-

"This was not an easy decision, but we made the decision because we want to ensure that we can fulfill all of the orders that are placed within a reasonable time period."

And for those of you simply hoping to score a PS3 by Christmas, you don't get a guarantee, either.

"We understand your frustration, but we believe it would be extremely irresponsible if we took preorders for product that we may not be able to deliver until 2007."

However, if you're looking for a Wii, you do have a better shot. Amazon says consumers who did preorder the system should receive their console "shortly after" the November 19 launch date. They wouldn't get any more specific than that, though, so it's anybody's guess what Amazon's operational definition of "shortly" is.
