Is PS3/PSP Connectivity Important?

When the PlayStation 3 first launched, one of its most highly touted features was the ability to link up with the PSP. Of course, it made little sense at first: in order to nab exclusive content for the handheld, you needed the pricey console to access the PlayStation Store. Since then, one can now remotely access the PSN via the PSP so it's now a viable option…but is it an appreciated one?

We have no idea how many of you out there have both the PS3 and PSP, but regardless of the actual number, we're having difficulty finding a lot of people who actually utilize this connectivity feature. Nowadays, the Store is home to a whole lot of content for both platforms in question, but now that PSP owners don't need the PS3, how often are they hooking up? Granted, there are plenty of reasons – you do need the link for certain things – but we're not sold on the idea that PS3/PSP connectivity is a selling point for either platform. If Sony wants this to become a bigger deal, perhaps they can adopt the Resistance: Retribution and Resistance 2 philosophy more often in the future. For those of you who don't know, if you have both the aforementioned titles, you will see that Retribution allows you play something special in R2 on the PS3. That could be fun. But for the most part, this is a new phenomenon.

So our question to you is: do you own both a PS3 and PSP, and if so, how often do you "connect?" Did any of you buy either the PS3 or PSP with the knowledge that you might want to try such a feature? And what would you want to see in the future? We enjoy most of the options presented on these systems but we have the sneaking suspicion that this particular one ain't quite as important as Sony may have hoped it would be…

I have both… well, had both. My Launch 60Gb PS3 YLOD'd me last week (visiting the repair man now, fingers crossed).

I've used the remote play feature for streaming media and playing Monsters (much fun), but that's about it so far. Dev's really need to step up and build remote play into more games, I think it would be a great feature and I would definitely use it. Granted, this just isn't viable for some games, but why can't I remote play PAIN on my PSP?

The EASports's 2007 lineup had the ability to sync your progress between consoles and was nice… but such ability has been removed.

Some times I use it to stream from my PC to my PS3 and then to my PSP…

I have both. When everyone is using the TV that the PS3 is hooked up to I can still play PJ Eden while they are in the room. Sometimes I use Aquatopia to see what my people are doing in the living room.

I have both.
I transfer CD's to my PC and then re format them for the PSP.
Sometimes the CD drive on my PC hacks up a hairball, so I use the PS3 to download the music tracks. It reads better and faster than a brand new stock HP.
Then I transfer PS3 to PSP.
PSP may not be the tool of choice, but PS3 is going to be quite the multifaceted home entertainment center-piece, if it isn't your standard already.

Me too. I ripped music from my old ps1 wipeout cd's using the pc, and uploaded them to the psp and ps3, where I was able to use them for the custom soundtracks for both Wipeout Pulse and Wipeout HD. Very cool.

I have both. A remotely connected once and browsed music and vids of my ps3 over the net, which was very cool to do. It's like remote desktop'ing using the psp to access the ps3. It's little things like that make the ps3 just that much more shiny.

I like using the PSP to watch movies stored on my PS3. It was actually one of the reasons i bought the PS3. As far as the connectivity features with retribution … meh.

Although i would be very excited if the PSP and PS3 versions of little big planet were tightly integrated. i.e. all levels created on either were playable on either.

I haven't yet bought a PSP, but I'm leaning towards doing so, simply for remote play, and being able to watch my house remotely via my PSEye, using the PSP. That was always a really cool bit 'o functionality to me. Other than that, yeah, I'd be interested in the connectivity, if Sony and their 1st party devs continue to develope cool little additions for those who own both.

I've used it a couple times but none of it works very well. Nintendo didn't succeed with connectivity and neither has Sony.

Remote play is useless, even across my home network it's usually unplayable. I'll just stick to using them as two separate devices since Sony can't seem to create a viable ecosystem between them.

If the remote play wasn't so crappy and unreliable I would use my PSP to watch movies and tv off of my PS3 over the internet. But other than that, my PSP just sits and gathers dust…

I have both and I use the remote play features every once in a while. There are several games that support remote play (Bionic Commando Rearmed!), mostly puzzlers. The real nice feature for remote play is the ability to check PSN messages while I'm out and on the go. I really love having the psp to remote play. The real feature I'd like from remote play however is Home support, that would be a real gem.

I have both. I never really connect them. I am eagerly awaiting the feature that let's you wifi connect through your ps3 with other ps3/psp owners. I heard Japan has a beta going around that supports that feature. I hope it comes to the states. I feel that they should work on that more than they have. I understand that they are busy with the recession and all though so I doubt upgrades and updates will come to fruition anytime soon.

I have both and use remote connect pretty often. It's nice to be able to watch videos when the TV is in use. Other than that, I don't really use the inter-functionality, but I would love to see it more robustly developed, even if it was only small stuff, like the old video memory cards for the Dreamcast.

It's one of those things that it's extremely nice to have, but it's kinda ok if I don't have it, that's my opinion.

I own both the PS3 and PSP too. XD

I utilize the connectivity sometimes lol

My PSP collection (30-40) and my PS2 collection (30-40) are strong and my PS3 (as of now, 6) will be strong as them also. By the end of this year, I expect myself to have at least 10 games. I've only had my PS3 for about 4 and a half months, so already having 6 games and counting in a bad economy (I don't have a job but I save money) is pretty good.

PS3/PSP connectivity is important for 2 reasons that I can see:
1) media sharing (movies, music, PSOne games, etc.)
2) remote play

I do think that the PS3 should be able to "rip" our PS2 library onto the "PSP2" when it comes out, especially if it has dual analog sticks.

I have a PS3 and a PSP. The idea of remote play and remote access, sold me on the PSP. Since PSN is now available through the PSP, I don't find myself connecting both devices. I would like to see more connectivity between both systems. Mini-games between R@ and retibution would be fantastic or PSP exclusive content from major game releases like Uncharted, LBP, MGS, etc. . . would be a real plus and PSP sales booster: in my humble opinion.
The PSP is a fantastic little handle held system but by and large lacks major IP's and software which the iPhone/iPod and DS Lite have going for those systems.
I think Sony could really own this generation with a killer 1-2 punch with inceased inter connectivity between the PS3 and the PSP.

I use remote play all the time. If my gf is watching a crap tv program I can just fire up remote play and watch whatever I want via PlayTV. Or if Im out somewhere and realise I am missing a TV program I want to watch (and I have a wifi connection) I can just connect to the PS3 and set it up to record the progam. I also use my PS3 as my main music storage, so when Im just listening to music at home I use remote play to manage what Im listening to rather than having the TV on to select the next album.

I've got both. Do not connect as much anymore. Sony and the devs are leaving money on the table by ignoring the connectivity of the systems. The devs can throw in mini-games or smaller content apps for the psp to complement their ps3 game. Heck, they can sell them as dlc on the psp store and make a killing. Say for MGS4, you could use your psp to control the drone. Or in Madden, you could use your psp to select play and manage your roster. Or the killer, would be to use the psp in MLB09 to warm up pitchers or batters.

Whatever happened to the PSP being used as an additional screen? I remember back before the PS3 was released they were giving a demo at E3 or something showing the F1 game and they were using the PSP as the rear view mirror. Or was this just Sony making claims again?

Got the PSP before the PS3, and none of this was a selling point for either system.

The only thing appealing about Remote Play right now is being able to use the PS3's browser remotely. I've got Netflix, and it's a pity I can't play my rental DVD's through this service. This would really do it for me.

I don't think Home should be run through Remote Play, it should be a standalone app on the PSP, run off the memory stick. And Sony needs to sell the PSP keyboard they promised years ago if they really want Home to work on the handheld.

The demos I've played remotely have all had lagging issues even over my home network. If this were addressed, I'd welcome more of this kind of thing, but right now it's too annoying. Except with PixelJunk Eden. 🙂

I have both, and I'm perfectly happy to use the connectivity when I can. This is when i am sending messages vis PS3 and also want to watch TV, or when I am connecting Resistance: Retribution demo to Resistance 2 (which is AWESOME by the way). I hope Sony and devs alike sort some stuff out to use with remote play though, it's ok being able to play PS1 games with it, but we need some PS2 / PS3 / DVD's to go with it!

I think this feature is a great idea but needs to be improved for functionality.

First, there needs to be some form of memory capabilities for the PSP. And not just their memory stick but something integrated into the handheld…if Apple can do it, Sony can.

Once thats complete…Sony could create a team who's sole purpose it to port PS3 games to PSP version (not hard since i would assume the script is similar).

Finally, games could be sold with codes that allow downloads from the PSN (2 birds, 1 stone). This is similar to Digital Copys form Movies. And YES…the games with download codes would have to cost a bit more just like the digital copys do.

You could then add PSP games to your library via the PS3. Save and transfer games that you have completed between systems. Utilize both pieces of hardware and never have to play the beginning of a game on the PSP that you already played on the PS3.

And now…a whole new way to use the PSP, the PS3 and the PSN……together.

Actually, I believe it would be incredibly difficult to simply port games from the PS3 versions to a PSP version. Leaving the storage capacity issue out of it entirely, there's still the matter of the processor. The PSP isn't built around the Cell and, as I understand it, the way that programmers have to use the multiple processing components in the Cell to get results would make it very difficult to port over.

Why PS3/PSP is indeed important what would happen If couldn't copy images, music, videos and Gaimz I would have to use an PC which is slower.

Remote Play should be removed though I don't like the fact that its hard to find an friging wi-fi hotspot in Belfast goddammit!!

I've got both, but when I play PS1 or PS2 games through Remote Play, there is quite a bit of lag – even though I have really good signal through the net – and so I don't use it at all anymore. They need to fix that and make it better somehow.

I have both, and love how they connect with eachother. I used remote play to play my ps1 games for quite awhile, the half a second delay doesn't work for some games, but worked fine for my Final Fantasy Anthology and Chronicles. I don't use it anymore though, suddenly I can't have my psp turn on my ps3 anymore, it just randomly turns on and I don't know what's going on. I read half the posts on this page and I hope there is someone else with the same problem, but found a solution or something. I'll read the rest in a moment, this page has filled up already and I don't know if anyone else will be reading this, but i'm hoping to find a solution. Anyways, I also hope that LBP for psp uses some kinda of connectivity to it's big brother on ps3, maybe level swapping? or something … lately i haven't even been playing games on my psp, but i use the RSS feed to download a bunch of Lost podcasts just about everynight to listen to before bed, so it gets a lot of use.
