LittleBigPlanet Has A Big Night At The 12th Annual IAAs

The game received high critical acclaim and although it hasn't performed quite as well as Sony may have hoped in terms of sales, it's still a multi-million seller, and public interest remains high. A few weeks ago, we learned that Media Molecule's innovative platformer, LittleBigPlanet , had earned a whopping 10 nominations for the 12th Annual Interactive Achievements Awards. The result? LBP won in 8 of those 10 categories.

Jay Mohr, comedian, actor and avid gamer, returned as host, and the talented men and women responsible for LBP strolled up to the stage again and again. They took home the following awards:

That's pretty much a clean sweep, yes? Left 4 Dead scored Computer Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots won Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, Prince of Persia took Outstanding Achievement in Animation, Dead Space got Action Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, Mirror's Edge won Adventure Game of the Year, and God of War: Chains of Olympus was the Handheld Game of the Year. Lastly, Bruce Shelley was honored "for his tremendous contributions to the video game industry," and if you want a recap of the highlights, the Independent Film Channel will run a half-hour special on the IAAs in April.

Congrats to all the winners! In our mind, MGS4 and LBP should've reversed places, but hey, it's still richly deserved. Feel free to check out the full list of winners .

I second that. I kick myself for waiting so long to break down and buy LBP as I love it (I wasted over an hour last night just getting hooked on decorating my pod). Tonight I'm finally gonna get some local multiplayer action going.

And if you want to see it shred the competition there the website indicates:

In a partnership with the Academy, Independent Film Channel (IFC) will broadcast a half hour special with highlights from the IAAs in April 2009.

LittleBigPlanet basically pwned all even MGS4 which really surprised me. But best action game should've went to Metal Gear how can Dead Space beat it?

I thought LBP was amazing. I haven't played it lately as I got 100% of the developers stuff. I made a few attempts at making levels with varying levels of quality, and they all took me an eternity (check them out migabyte 5000). The user stuff is definitely an amazing idea, and some blows my mind, but I can now go weeks without going online and catch up on the new stuff. I want them to release another MGS style pack.

Some of the User levels I've played are on par with or better than the "story" levels, at least in terms of playability (they don't usually look as good, but at least they're fun).

I'm pissed at LBP right now because the story levels stopped being fun and became frustrating (I'm in the Islands, if you're interested).

Awesome, I'm glad it won. My favorite game that I never play, I just don't have the patience! I need to get back into it though.

Mirrors Edge is not even that adventurous. i have to say, you are very confined to just going in one dirction, you cant explore.
really the adventure game of the year should have been should have been something like GTA4 or Saints Row 2
maybe Fallout 3

LMAO…it's funny because as maybe some of you know I don't have a PS3. But over last weekend, I went over to Best Buy and they had a PS3 set up. I demoed out LittleBigPlanet – and wow, it was fun as hell. Again as I thought it was only just jumping around and getting through the course, it's so much more than that.

I was playing it with a guy there on co-op and we had so much fun actually.

Then…I watched the award show on Thursday night…WOW. First off the award show was poorly done but when I saw LittleBigPlanet just completely own the whole place, I couldn't believe my eyes. I'm surprised that it also won character performance. I was expecting Solid Snake of MGS 4 to take that but oh well.

As for MGS 4, I expected it to win a bit more, but it's real competitor wasn't Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, or Dead Space but rather IT WAS LITTLEBIGPLANET LOL! However MGS 4 did win Best Original Soundtrack – which was WELL DESERVED. It was a close one between this and LittleBigPlanet for Game of the Year. But oh well.

Great job Media Molecule.
