If there's one guy who can talk about "making the 'impossible' possible," it's Hideo Kojima.
According to Gamasutra, Corporate Officer, Executive Producer and Director of Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima, will stand before a crowd of attentive listeners and deliver a keynote address at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The event, which takes place next month, will also feature speeches from notable members of the industry, including Epic's Rod Fergusson, LittleBigPlanet creators Mark Healey and Alex Evans, and Lionhead's Peter Molyneux. Kojima…well, we all know about him. Best known for the legendary Metal Gear Solid franchise, this mastermind's speech title is, "Solid Game Design: Making the 'Impossible' Possible," and everyone will gather at the Moscone Convention Center at the end of March to hear it. We should also remember that at the start of 2009, Kojima stated that he would make a "fresh start" with his team, mostly in an effort to appeal to a wider audience. He believes he's still missing some of the mainstream Western gamers, and like so many Japanese developers in this generation, he aims to change that.
In some ways, this sounds a little frightening, especially to those who have adored the MGS series. But we have complete faith in Kojima and Co., and we'll be one of many who will be interested to hear what Kojima has to say in that address. He probably won't drop any hints regarding new projects, but you never know…
Is this going to be open to the public? I would love to go see this. I didn't get a chance to stand in line at the Metreon when Kojima was signing copies of MGS4 and I still hate myself for it.
Ben, do you think you could get a new picture for Kojima? You know one where he doesn't look like some kind of alien. Every article you guys post with him has this picture in it.
I think its a good picture. Maybe just me?
lol…..how the hell does he look like an alien?
A very enlightened, thoughtful, but troubled alien.

JA360 just you, lol.
no not bored just deep in thought. he HAS to be a thinker to come up with the stories and stuff and that he does.
WoOt
Because they, for the most part, only sell well in japan 🙁 least as much as they would like, so they have to westernize for the twitch happy western gamers..
Why are Japanese game developers so hell bent on appealing to "mainstream" westerners? It makes me afraid that Japanese game makers will get to the point where they pump out nothing but action games and FPSs. Look at RE5 Chris Redfield looks like he pumped up on steroids since his last game appearance and now he has a big breasted bimbo sidekick, I guess this is what they think appeals to "mainstream" westerners. Some of us like games outside that "mainstream" west box, games like MGS, Valkyria Chronicles, Final Fantasy, etc. But I have faith in Kojima and I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever game he makes, I just don't want his games to lose that Japanese charm. We have waaay too many games with steroid enhanced meatheads with zero personality running around with assault riffles and chainsaws killing everything that moves. /rant *sigh* "There is no emotion, there is peace"
Everyone loves MGS4 but only 4 million in sales is insane to me. Everybody with a PS3 should have bought the game already, I mean it is only $50 now.
While I agree with you 100% the sad fact of the matter is that everyone with a PS3 doesn't like this type of game and here is my experience with that:
I know quite a few people who have the PS3 because it is more reliable and is more powerful but they have it because they like FPS games. A lot of the people I know could care less about story and only play COD(insert whatever) online and have the Resistance's and are about to sh*t golden bricks waiting on KZ2 and while these are great and all it is all they play.
Sony having the most powerful system and free online play seems to be a double edged sword of sorts in this regard. It seems to me at least a great number of people are getting on board the more they hear about great FPS and action titles and in turn selling more of these and per capita selling less of the story driven games. Sad really.
@Coverton.
I think i see where your coming from if you ment to say "not every one who has a ps3 likes this sort of game", but I love the series (from uk BTW). I also got a ps3 cause i had ps2 and I thought at the time (ps2 times) there was a hell of a lot more FPs's on the pc (or thats where i played them anyway.
May be i didnt have the good fps's on the ps2 or something, but i deffo had MGs2, GTA (3d one, was it GT3 by the way, always get mixed up with that one). thunderhawk, desert storm, dropship (dropship probably got slated, but i though it was pretty good at the time) and a few other games that i cant remeber at the moment, but i dont remeber any FPS, they were all 3rd person. maybe I probably just missed em (or need reminding)

I think 4.5 million and counting are great numbers .
He still can speak English…Kaz can, and he aint a bigger legend
huh?
lol king,…… speakos delingo kaz can deedy, but restiction sense of provale will.
huh?
Wait…What?
God…I don't understand why some people post on english speaking sites, knowing their english isn't very good.
hmmm this could be interesting. hope we find out what this new direction/project is going to be, but it could just be blowing sonys trumpet like some sort of success story.
Another thing in the back of my mind is the fact that during MGS4 in one of the cut scenes, theres a list of all the MGS games on the right in date order, below MGS4 it had two boxes that said "in production" so there could be an extra game on the way (may not have snake in them mind, but who knows, could be an MGS set before MGS4). Im assuming that ipod game could have been one of the boxes.
If ive missed any other new MGS anouncements then im probably totally wrong, im sure someone will let us know…
Good for him, I look forward to PSXE's coverage. Also if he absolutely MUST appeal to westerners then I hope we can assume that he will bring his own private genius into the mix. Though it is possible to mistake all of us for twitchy gun toting gamers it would be a stretch to say that Kojima would go uber mainstream and accidentally make the next Haze.
Come on, just drop one hint on the fresh start.

i love Hideo Kojima, pretty much everything he makes is gold, i just hope he doesnt give away the next metal gear project to someone else so they could have a chance or something, metal gear is hideo's game, it just wouldnt be the same without him… getting off topic… but i cant wait to see what he has to come in the future
The Japanese need to stop the "Westernization" bullsh*t!
It's so sad…………sheeesh sad I say! -_-
:*( The US is only going to ruin v-games just like it ruins everything from movies to music
A western Final Fantasy would just kill me.
How does the US ruin movies and music? PLEASE explain that one…
'Sold Game Design'..lol This is how I made Metal Gear what it was..
I realy cant wait for his next project. I just hope it keeps a decent storyline whatever genre he and the team decides to try. Too many games these days lack a real storyline.
I love how they are looking for us in their new designs. Its a great change to have what was before a typically Japanese market stand up and realize the western market.
The western market sucks!
@scarecrow
ah..dont know if it sucks mate, but its deffinately different.
Wonder if he can come up with something that appeals to both masses. Suppose granturismo does in a way..or does it.
Scarecrow, I live in America and I agree with you. LOL It seems most games targeted toward "westerners" have some cyborg or steroid injected meatheads blasting a hole in some guy or alien's chest every 5 seconds and these games have little to no story in them.

I think the reason people say that western games suck is because they are used to playing japanese style games.(lol im captain obvious huh) but we are used to them and is a bit disheartening to learn that they want to appeal more to us when in the beginning we couldnt get enough of their games. Didnt capcom outsource SF4 that kind of hurts on the inside for those of us waiting (so patiently) for MVC3 or even the next CVS
You may be on to something jakthedaxter. When I started playing videogames 85 to 90 percent of them were made by Japanese developers. Now days the videogame industry is worldwide and allot more mainstream, in some ways that's good in other ways it's not. I grew up playing games made by Japanese developers and today videogames are shifting toward mainstream westernization and away from the charming Japanese games I love. There are still a few games that have that distinct Japanese charm like Valkyria Chronicles but that game only sold around 350,000 which is a joke IMO and that's probably why we don't see many games like that anymore. I don't like where the videogame industry is headed when a mindless twitch game like Halo 3 can sell over 9 million but an awesome game like VC with great characters, great story and great gameplay can't even crack half of 1 million…
MY HERO
hey, i thought josh was banned in this site, why is he still here?
anyway, i just hope that the next metal gear game will still be ps3 exclusive. and dont worry vicious54, ps3 sales will increase when kz2 comes out and when that happens, mgs4 will increase in sales.. that's for sure!
You cant make the impossible possible, becasue if you did that would always have ment it was probable….
…or improbable, and maybe even infeasible, but indubitably, not possibly impossible.
Maybe Hideo can skool these boys on how to pump out some real graphics, without using some Unreal Engine as a crutch.
hahaha, Amen to that brother
So my comment gets deleted because I questioned the return of a banned member ? Good job Ben .
Let it go, he stopped listening ages ago
Off topic but call of duty world at war dlc is coming out in March yiipppie

kojima reminds me of tetsuo from akira a bit don't know why, anyway if it is impossible for kojima then it is ubber impossible, but kojima can maked impossible possible, so probably plausable that he already made the impossible possible
Undeniable.
Alot of people here keep saying "appealing to the western audience". While it's true that they don' love fps. Chris being pumped up for RE5 is not for westerners. They love good looking muscular people more than anyone. Trust me, I have been to Japan multiple times and I have lived in Asia for the last 3 years. RE is huge in Japan, but resistance isn't. Metal Gear is a more western style game, but this is cause the narrative and American feel.
lolz @ ffrulez
and, japan should stop westernizing their games.
IMO, its ok if it will apeal west+east, but japan games that become "too west" will lost its "unique, story oriented japan-feel"
you guys dont think he'll announce a 360 port do you? ~shudders~
No, If he did that then I'd have to punch him square in the mouth…legend or not.
Thats right, there was a PS3 reference after you killed Crying Wolf. Something about how powerful the system is or something right?

This was wonderful and did my heart good to read it. Use paragraphs next time, though, because I almost skipped over it. I just saw the words "Valkyria Chronicles" and forced myself to read the whole thing.
