Despite all the rumors you may have heard concerning the PlayStation 4, Sony has said a new machine is still a long ways off. …did you really expect them to say anything else?
According to what Sony told T3 magazine, Sony remains firmly entrenched in their "10-year lifespan" philosophy, and they apparently haven't wavered on that claim in the slightest. In fact, they see total sales of the PS3 "far outlasting" that of the PS2, which is something they've said before. The quote in question reads as follows:
"PS3 won't celebrate its second birthday in the UK until March of this year, and we've said all along that the life-cycle for this generation of hardware will be longer than previous models. PS2 was still going strong after eight years, and with the power the Cell processor provides, not to mention the fact that PS3 is inherently future-proof, we see the PS3 sales curve far outlasting that of PS2."
It's a minefield of predictions out there, but Sony won't hear any of it. A few developers and analysts have predicted in the past that the next PlayStation may see the light of day as early as 2011, but Sony says that simply isn't going to happen. However, it may be interesting to note that the PS2's longevity has continued well into the new era; hence, the PS3 could continue along in much the same fashion after the PS4 launches. Sony is merely saying the PS3 has a 10-year lifespan much like the PS2…but that may include a significant overlap time with a new console. Just something to think about, but we figured you would want the official reply to these rumors.
im gona have to give up college money for that PS4 in ?2012?
Really good to hear i guess……i hope they dont pump another out until it is at least leaps and bounds greater than the current console…i dont want a ps3.5 TBH though i have no idea how far they can go past MAybe another generation or so….they need some new way to play….i hate to admit nintendo might have been on to something..(lol or not)(hopefully not)
BTW LOOOOOONG time reader, first time poster…lol
I decided to make some new friends on account of my PS3(launch 60gb) finally dying on me(the yellow light thing) and im sooo heartbroken…omg so im paying them $150 to effectively SWAP out my broken ps3 with im guessing a refurb which isnt an awesome deal but way better than another $500(i would only get a 160gb when the time comes)…..sorry guys i NEEDED to rant a little bit…
Welcome to the dark carnival.
was your warranty still good when it crapped out??
cause you coulda just called customer support
it didn't cost me anything when my PS3 broke
except i had to wait a few weeks
i did not have a warranty at all….i had a launch system and never had any problems until yesterday
My Bros did the same thing less than a year old and hardly used it. Do we have any Idea why it dose it or what causes it?
Oh yea. I called it! haha
This is being discussed in the forums, head on over guys 🙂
Here is my thought don't make ps4 until SE is owned by SCE and at least 2 other more developers, the ps3 has sold 80mill, you have crated 3 new and popular ip and last but not least you are sure that ps4 will deliver the most power out of the other consoles.
80 mil? thought it just hit 20?
lol at least 80 mil
People say 'this won't last' and bla bla bla, but really it does last. The only thing that doesn't last, it the console that is said to last with no backing behind it *cough*360*cough*. Honestly, microsoft didn't make it future proof, and that's the sad truth.
PS4 will be launch at the same time 720 will be out (2011 or 2012). Sony will keep the promise with 10 years lifespan for PS3, but that doesn't mean a new machine will be running at the same time. PS2 and PS3 living in armony and with solid sales without a conflict. Yep, more pressure for Microsoft to bring something really good (not a crappy 360 +). Oh well, we will have to wait to see. Meanwhile, as a PS3 owner, I will be really busy playing with all the new games during '09 and '10.
it won't be a 360 +. it'll be the xbox 540
hey maybe when 2012 hit the whole word will be destroyed and we wont have to suffer the 3rd coming of the shitboxcantfixme.wouldn't that be somethin?
lol lovely, 1 up
lol i've been curious about that mayan prediction. better get the gaming in while we can i suppose
I would say let the PS4 wait until there's some tough competition. So if Microsoft puts out the next xbox and the PS3 can still manage to keep up for a couple years, then keep that up and again blow the competition out of the water once the time is right. I mean it's going to be a long time before we look back on these current-gen games and think "Wow, those games aren't nearly vast or beautiful enough."
No surprises here, what with a lot of improvements for the PSN and the consoles functionality coupled with an awesome array of 1st party games, the PS3 has a lot of staying power 😀
don't think there will be a PS4,i'd say SONY will design a console,tv,blu ray & massive HDD hybrid(no bigger than a LCD tv)
You'll stick it on ur living room wall & it will do every thing, games,tv channels, movies, downloadable media & communication.
It will be the future after all.
add in superfast blue tooth to the 100tb media centre hidden inside the wall and the soon-to-be-released USB 3.0 for any old analogue files, and you have yourself a deal… my lord 🙂
If they want to hit that sales number they should probably try to pull out a win in the console war department. I mean it doesn't bother me so much that they are in 2nd place (that one thing doesn't count) because I get the games I love anyhow, but they should back up their predictions with effort.
I think it should.
Honestly once Bluray becomes more mainstream is when its glory years will truly shine.
Plus. Im betting on a price drop soon enough. Id say later this year.
wat just happen, wa wa just happen I I I I thought but but u how?
Ya love me dont cha.;)
….interesting. I'm sure there's a story to THIS…
-Arvis
A story of greatness.
Gimmee a 'W'
Gimmee a 'T'
Gimmee a 'F'
?
There sure are alot of new community members. Whats with the influx? Killzone news maybe?
Sony is really being wise here. Clearly, their development costs eclipsed those of their competitors. Certainly, their first-year marketing was abominable. But, the thing to remember is that Sony ALONE had the guts to incorporate bleeding-edge technology in their console, and it will pay huge dividends for them in the end.
You see, we're only one-fifth of the way through the PS3's life-cycle, and already, the Xbox 360 is coming up short. MGS4 and KZ2 are just the beginning–wait until Uncharted 2, GOW III, M.A.G. and Heavy Rain arrive! However, even those jaw-dropping titles won't have tapped the full capabilities of the PS3's architecture.
In short order, MS will have to spend a pile of its cash reserves to develop and manufacture a new console in order to compete, and when they do, a good deal of their marketing momentum will be lost. Many current 360 owners will be outraged when MS asks them to replace their fourth new 360 (RROD being what it is) with a new, improved 720 (or whatever). When that day comes, many 360 owners will likely jump the fence, become PS3 owners, and never look back.
Perhaps MS dropped the price on their stripped arcade model to raise the revenue needed for 720 development? Only time will tell, but either way, Sony just needs to stay its course of developing terrific exclusives, while improving PSN, Home, and other platform features to the fullest.
Really, the PS3 is sitting pretty, since it will only need minor upgrades along the way (thinner chips, bigger hard drives, etc.) in order to remain competitive. This will buy Sony them time to develop the PS4, but I'm not expecting anything earth-shattering from them–and neither should you.
Rest assured, it WILL be stronger, faster, etc., but Sony has developed a core architecture with the PS3 that will largely shape its next-generation console. What's great is the amount of money Sony stands to save during the PS4's development cycle. Pretty smart, huh?
Let's face it guys, we're fast approaching the time when consoles will deliver truly cinematic games, from start to finish. When that time comes, capabilities besides graphics will suddenly become more important. Just what those capabilities are, remains to be seen. But my hunch is that Sony has a much better idea where the industry is headed than its competitors. That's why I'm kicking back, enjoying the ride, and cheering on their efforts all the way.
Stop mulling over the sales, people. That's Michael Pachter's job, and he usually gets it wrong. I don't need 50 million others to confirm I made the better purchase. I KNOW I did. See, I'm a Macintosh user, so I'm used to this. I wouldn't trade my PS3 for two 360s; likewise, I wouldn't trade my last-gen Mac for a couple of hella-fast PCs. I'd rather spend my time enjoying the best technology now, and trusting that what's coming down the pike will be even better. Perhaps you should, as well.
BTW, Josh, welcome back–maybe. Time will reveal whether you're an asset, or still just an asshat. For your sake, I hope it's the former. Take care, but know that I'm watching you…
lolz, thumbs up.
haha
Comedians. I love em.
I don't see the PS4 coming out until at least 6-7 years after the PS3 launched in 2012 or 2013 at the earliest. Graphics can only get so good before they reach photo realism. Hardcore graphics nuts will jump at the next gen. consoles but console graphics are so good now it will be very difficult to convince the average gamer to spend another $300 to $600 on a PS4 3 years from now when the graphics wont be THAT much better.
Sony only needs to change a few things,
bring back B/C
$50 price drop
and……."ADVERTIZE, ADVERTIZE, ADVERTIZE!!!
If they do that, the sales of the PS3 will rocket to the moon(or at the very least, the space station!)
Hey, thats it! Just rocket the PlayStation to the SpaceStation, & then advertize the hell of it,
Here's the way I would do 1 of the SpaceStation/Playstation commercials……
(The music from the movie 2001 Space Oddesey comes in, the volume starting faint & slowly rising)….
A camera pans across the comso's and then you begin to see a wide angle shot of the SpaceStation coming into view…..
You see the Space Station's circling earth,
while having to dodge the sun, moon, other planets, assorted astoriods, comets, & meteors that are haphazardly whizzing by in the background…
(Music grows louder)
The camera zooms in on the window of the Space Station's operations room…..
(music rises)……
The camera view now goes right through the window, revealing the Space Station's mult-national crew hard at work at the controls….
(music rises)
The camera zooms in a close-up to show what's in their hands that they're using to controll the Space Station…..
Camera slowly reveals that they're all franticlly manipulating….." Playstation3
controllers".
All the astronauts start relaxing & place
their PS3 controllers on ledge below the Space Station's instrument panel.
The lead astronaut wipes the beading sweat drolets off the top of his helmet & declares,
"Everyone can stand down since we're all out of danger now".
The 1st officer also relax's & placing his PS3 controller down too, and replying "Whew, we
really dodged the big ones this time".
(music volume lowers)
The lead astronaut: "We need some relaxation time, so what would everyone like to do now?"
Camera slowing pans across the operations room, showing that the whole crew picking up their controllers once again……
As the camera pans over to their huge operations screen…….
it slowly reveals that they're all fighting off glowing red-eyed hordes on the Planet Helghan, in KillZone2!!!!!!!
Camera backs out of the e Station revealing a bunch of Playstation3's circling the Space Station, in a now-calm cosmo's.
(music fades & ends, dead silence from now on)
The picutre slowly spins into a black Hole….
And out of this solid blackness, comes this one sentence spining out of the Black Hole, with these words now orbiting around the screen…..
"One small step for mankind, but one huge leap for all gamekind…..Playstation3"!
Well just look at the first ps2 games. They weren't ALL that impressive to begin with aside from GT3. It wasn't until Final FX, GoW1 and later GT4 that really blew the lid off the Ps2 power.
The quality that comes out of the PS3 to begin with will please anyone. That means it just has more staying power because game quality is just compounded rather than being developed.
@BikerSaint: LOL… nice script! I'd watch that in a New York minute…
@Wage SLAVES: Well stated. I too think we're hitting the maturity point for the PS3, which means it should be a good ride from here on out…
I would think that the firmware updates alone are reason enough to have the PS3 surpass the PS2 in terms of lifespan.
I wouldn't put down any PS4 speculation though. If Sony were smart they'd definitely be using the entire 10 year lifespan of the PS3 and put the necessary effort into R&D.
Three great consoles and multiple console wars should effectively give Sony the advantage of hindsight. The best way to plan for the future is to learn from the past.
PS4 will be able to emit the proper environmental smells through your speakers to further immerse the player in the action along with beaming the video directly into your mind.
@World, that's a great idea!
(except for any in-game farting, where I believe being downwind could make for some real bad sh-t).
lolz
LOL… you the man! We can hope, can't we?!
I think the PS4 will come just as soon as Microsoft releases their next console. It will be a staring contest between Sony and Microsoft to see who blinks first. Microsoft will want to be out first again to have that leg up, but Sony (IMHO) will have the tech ready this time (blu-ray and upgraded cell) to launch in the same window. It's just a matter of when. Of course the current economic situation could cause this generation to stretch longer as they try to safely milk the money from what they already have rather than gamble on the new console in this climate.
Honestly, I am not that focusing on a new machine at this moment or at any moment. To me, it is always the software (the games) I care. At this very moment, the developers should focus on how to make a smooth transition from the PS2 developing frame to the PS3 developing frame and produce quality games to match up the PS3 power.
The PS3 is just about to truly flourish and Sony had a big loss on coming up this PS3 product in order to move onto this generation. The PS3 market is just getting warm up, if we or sony is thinking again to create a new machine, then on the software side, developers will never be able to catch up. This is not the way to go; focusing on upgrading and perfecting the software and games are the top priority for ps3 or for any generation of consoles.
On the other hand, when the PS3 technology is again matured and out-dated, then moving onto the next generation i.e. PS4 is reasonable and necessary, but certainly not now.
Such is my opinion on this issue.

Haha, World, it's funny you should say that,
cause about a year and a half ago, I read an article in a technology magazine that had an inside scoop about Sony patenting a device that 'transmits feelings and senses' on a biological level using some kind of revolutionary tech.
Since then I've heard nothing of it and Sony has never mentioned it. I've tried to research it online but I don't quite know what to type into google… (sony thought sending machine??? lol)
I'm sure I have the magazine lying around somewhere, and I could be cool and search for it, scan the article and upload the pics on a site, but I really can't be bothered :p
Anyway if they incorporate something like this, we would get a gaming machine that transcends the title 'Next-Gen' and become something altogether more revolutionary. So much so that Nintendo's endeavours would look like ideas and inventions for little children. Oh, wait…
On a side note: I lost my phone headphones and they're special Samsung ones with peculiar connectors and so I have to shell out for another expensive pair! (Now pretend you care about my issues! :p)
