If you're one of the many gamers clamoring for cross-platform multiplayer for DC Universe Online , we've heard an interesting reason why it may not happen…and it has nothing to do with technical issues.
MTV Multiplayer blog interviewed the game's creative director Jens Andersen and senior producer Wes Yanagi, and they asked after an update on cross-compatibility for PlayStation 3 and PC users. Check out what Yanagi had to say on the subject, and believe it or not, the restrictions may lie in the social conventions of the PS3 and PC crowds:
"[The certification process] is going to be a consideration, but for me personally, it's going to be establishing the best experience for the users, and right now the speculation for me is that PS3 players and PC players are kind of different social groups. PC players are used to the anonymity of text chat most of the time, and then once you get to know somebody or are playing with friends that you know, then you go to voice and use Ventrilo or TeamSpeak or something like that. Whereas console players, I think they're just used to going into voice chat right off the bat."
Yanagi added that in his experience, console players tend to "talk smack all the time," while PC players are a little more polite and civil. Therefore, if one group is offending everyone and the other group just wants to play and be nice, things could get hairy (that's the simplest explanation). Andersen elaborated on the concept:
"You can offend as many people as you want [in multiplayer console games] because you're just going to automatically go into the match anyway. [In 'DCUO'] you choose to make a hero and you have to live with these people; youre going to see them all the way up and in the end game, and if you're just offending people left and right, theyre not going to want to group with you and theyre not going to want to talk to you. [MMOs] are social games, they're about getting together and accomplishing really great things, forming guilds and leaving your stamp on this virtual world. And you need lots of people to do that. So you know what? It will probably be a good thing. It'll teach those kids some manners!"
Well, there's no doubt that some younger players may be on the console and older players on the PC, but in our experience, it's all about who you play with. For our part, we're not so interested in playing with strangers all the time, and with something like a MMO, where you spend an obscene amount of time online, you will likely spend more time with the same people. We understand that, but…well, at least console gamers get some sun every now and then. 'cough'

Interesting, there could be a voting system to "kick" someone off if they are really being a bad irritations… surely they can include some sort of access controls?

I agree, its a mmo what kind of trash can u talk on a mmo I talk to mature people not immature.
If any of you agree with this article, I'll be pissed. Hell only a few other members on PSX still WANT Co-0P split-screen. So If alot of you say that you "don't like playing with strangers all the time" then you just proved that we need more Co-op split-screen games.
I don't like getting online meeting new people I know nothing about all the time. I prefer playing a game with a friend or family member at my house.
You and me both Wizard I want more split-screen and I want it now.
i agree, we are a different breed, we just have to accept taht
ps. were much cooler
Yea I could really like playing with more mature PC gamer. Plus afterwords i could go have a little exercise with my Wii, someting you cant do with a mousse and keyboard 🙂 j/k
bring biaches, al take ol of yo biiches. lol no idea what I just said but hope its offensive to pc owners.
back on topic, I have been a pc gamer for long time now so I don't mind playing with them.
From my own experience, you'll find a rivalry between PC and consoles with FPS more then MMOs. The mouse and KB against the controller if you will.
A big community is needed in an mmo so it should be cross-platform, i mean not many ps3 users want to pay for monthly fees which is disheartening because that means less people to play with.
If people get annoying then we should get the option to either:
1) Kick them like Qubex said
2) Throw them into a tree or something…

In all honesty I think he may be thinking more of the 360 crowd and that is not to instigate a riot I just mean that all pro's and elite's come with mics so the 360 crowd is used to talking right off the bat and I have to say I hear more vocabulary on the 360 that would make a sailor and a rapist blush much more often than I hear that type of language on the PS3.
True we have our fair share of bad mouths (points to self) on the PS3 but I think that the PS3 and PC crowd would mesh a bit better that the 360 and PC crowds would.
But all this is just my opinion as Yanagi's is his.
Whens this game out on ps3 im looking forward to this!!!
Be good if we could play 360 owners..things would get rather heated i rekon loool
i kno we could'nt play them but would be great if we could
IMO I had enough of some of the snootier elements of the PC FPS crowd a while back.
I was getting a bit sick of what I call "the arms race" in PC FPS crowds. You know the kind of thing people boasting abut the specs of their rig and what cool new and expensive kryboard/mouse gaming set up they just got to give them that "edge". I didn't care what I played on at the time but when I got into a few, erm, conversations about how I felt console FPS games were a fairer test of skill(because of the egality/equality of everyone using the same mechine and controller)I got more grief than you'd believe.
I was a noob, I knew nothing, console gamers were all brats with no idea what "real" gaming was about etc, etc.Obviously most people saw my point and even if they preferred K/M for their own gaming could agree that maybe I was right about the fairness in online MP matches. But I never felt the same after the vocal minority(who I'dplayed with many times)flamed me just for having an opinion.
To this day I dunno quite why some reacted so funnily(maybe they felt threatened that I was saying it was only their set up that made 'em good-which wasn't what I was saying but hey)but a lot of people went down in my estimations after getting so uptight.
Imo PC gamers are more civilised on the surface but when they smack talk they mean it whereas on consoles you might hear more of it but it means waaay less. Be nice if we could get along mind.
Anyone who has played Ut3 online in a pad and K/m enabled game will know what knd of advantage a good k/m player can have over the pad player and I felt, in some cases, that peoples better equipment also gave them a bit of too much of an advantage in all k/m match ups as well.
I'm a PC/PS3 gamer and I here people talk plenty of smack across both platforms. IMO I would have to say those comments are BS. It all depends on what type of game your playing. If your playing an mmo it's probably more team oriented so there will be less trash talk. If it's competitive multiplayer there will probably be more than average trash talk. Do you hear a lot of trash talk over R2 Co-op play? I don't very often.
From my experience,PSN users are generally more civilised than LIVE(maybe a more mature userbase)
In a mmorpg i'd say there would be less trash talking anyway compared to FPS or TPS.
Off topic,it takes a certain amount of acquired skill to nail headshots with a game pad whereas with a KB'n'M mostly anybody thats a gamer can get headshots with general ease.
I really doubt there is going to be any issues between the different platform users. I play FFXI and maybe once I've seen it come up that people care what system you are playing on, and thats coming from people playing on ps2/3, Xbox and PC.
or they could limit the voice chat for consoles players until you've gained enough experience, reputation, etc.
Thats BS. Has that guy ever played an online computer game. Everytime I get on Im gettin cursed out. People are going to talk smack regardless its a video game. And btw what the hell can you possibly talk smack about in a DC universe. I think his argument is weak and flawed.
Trash talk is stressful.
That will suck if they don't link us PS3 and PC players. I mean hell if people on PC dont want to hear someone talking im sure they will have a "mute" button for a person.
Why limit us to just be able to play with only PS3 people. If they wanted to make a real MMO then they would allow us cross gaming.
I hope they link both the PS3 and PC players when this launches. I am a user of both, play EQ2 mostly on the PC and when I am bored with that it's time for my PS3 loving. The argument of how "civil" both platforms would be is a little tricky since no matter where you go or what you play, there is always going to be trash talk. MMO's and MMORPG's are no different. I say bring it on, hell I might just buy this for both systems PC for evil and PS3 for good.

I think the argument is that kids have easier access to consoles. Also, they look more to consoles for their gaming, not PC's. With that in mind, there are more immature people on consoles than PC's. Just my $.02.
Edit: Oh, I just sent my ps3 in for repair yesterday. So, hopefully I'll have it back by next week. I've missed out on so much PS3 lovin'!!!

What kind of Bullcrap is this? Little inmature kids don't play on PS3. They play on Wii or Xbox 360 (because most parents would rather buy something cheaper than a $400 PS3). In fact, you would think that this would be vise versa because a cheap PC can be purchased for a lower price than a PS3. This means that a child is more likely to play on a PC than they are on a PS3.
