Oh, you've got 'em. We've all got 'em. Here are some of mine (and your list, like mine, can include anything related to the industry):
Use the analog for everything!!! …what face buttons?
This is first on the list because I continually come across new games that focus entirely on the analog and almost completely ignore the rest of the controller. This happens a lot with some sports games, for example, and for the life of me, I can't understand the fascination. You know, there's a reason why many FPS fans don't particularly like the Sony controller for their favorite genre; the analogs have always been too sensitive. The analogs on the 360 controller are stiffer and feel firmer, while the ones on the Dual Shock and Dual Shock 2 gamepads always feel lighter and looser. I have never found them to be pinpoint accurate, and developers are starting to think the analog is the only goddamn button on the controller! Just using face buttons doesn't mean your "last-gen," people. Seriously.
Put in the game, turn the power on, and…why am I still waiting?
It's one of my longest-running pet peeves and one that typically kept me away from PC gaming. I always hated putting in a PC game and then having to spend a half-hour fiddling with settings and options before I could even play the first level. Oh, the sound card needs adjusting. Now it's the resolution. Now I need to install something. Now I need the gamepad and not the mouse. Now I need to download a patch. Blah, blah, blah . Unfortunately, a lot of this has popped up in some form in the console realm, but it's not quite as bad. I just hate having to wait through some sort of update whenever I go to play a new game; there was a time when you put a game in and played it. Not that the results aren't worth the wait; I'm just saying .
Worthless NPC dialogue
I may be one of the few people left who appreciate becoming immersed in a virtual world, which is why I always like to talk to everyone in the area and hear what they have to say. This dates back to my RPG-intensive days of gaming, and I always despised the vast number of townspeople, villagers, city-folk and what-have-you that never once had anything useful or interesting to say. They don't have to say anything, as far as I'm concerned. But if they're going to talk, I'd like to think they'd have something interesting to say, especially considering the fact I'm usually playing a stranger who is just meeting everyone for the first time. I dunno…I know it can be challenging to write a zillion pages of script for basically non-existent characters, but it always irked me.
Reviewers who only care about "innovation"
Usually, the elitist critics use this word in every other sentence; it's just an excuse to score a game lower and to feed their gigantic egos. The bottom line is that while I always applaud innovation and evolution, and I don't condone shameless repetition, there's no reason to tear down a game because it's not "new." You may not have noticed, but there are plenty of different genres, and just about every year, we can point to several titles that absolutely innovate in some way. …is there any particular reason every single title has to "innovate" in some way? It's an effing sequel . What do you want now? Oh, Twisted Metal 2 was too much like the original…what were you looking for, Ace Combat ? Crash Bandicoot ? I mean, the entire thing just drives up the wall .
So those are a few of mine…how about you?
I hate it when someone feels the need to state they own both systems and somehow feels it validates their opinions and makes it less fanboyish.
" oh i own both hd systems and i have to say that gears of war makes uncharted look like a ps1 game, dont call me a fanboy though, if you look at my sig, i have a gamer tag and a psn, so i can't be wrong"
That type of sh*t is annoying the hell out of me lately, i see it in a lot of other forums, not so much here.
Also, that innovation peeve is spot on Ben
Exactly! i know someone like that. He is an Xbox fanboy and thinks that xbox is better because he likes it more and owns both. once a fanboy always a fanboy
Youtube is exactly like this
this is by the gayest stupidest fanboy ever
'Hell Yeah XBOX 360 are better I had 2 PS3's they all blew up but now I've got a pro its great'
what a dumbass
You have to remember that most of them probably don't have a PS3, and they still say that, to make them look like they have a strong foundation on their opinion.
Not to mention that when people say crap like that it makes people who do have both systems and are not screaming belligerent fanboys look like asshats in some places. I cannot count the amount of times I have given praise to a game on one system at a certain forum and then have been berated for being a fanboy because I like the other system….. oooooooo…..
So I guess that brings me to my pet peeve and sorry to high jack your comment with this.
I absolutely loathe this generation's propensity of hate toward the opposing console from either side. I hate the fanboys that have both systems but cannot pull their heads from their asses long enough to judge both systems on their merits just as much as I hate people that say anyone that likes games on a certain console is a dumbass because that console or this one is inferior. I personally like both consoles for certain games on each that are exclusive. I like to own multiplatform games on my PS3 because I like to play online for free and I like having truly native HD, but I also like Mass Effect, Fable 2, and Lost Odyssey.
Both system have their inherent merits and yes the user interface on the XBL was a bit nicer and friendlier when the PS3 launched, now it is a toss up and I could really not say one wins over the other.
Stop the hate. Let's just play some video games.
The one thing I hate most of all is when you are forced to watch a cut-scene. Its OK when its the first time, its just when you have been killed and you have to restart the level and yet again have to watch the cut-scene. I hate having to not be able to skip the credits after you have finished the game. I swear Devs do this on purpose.
I hate Publishers that come out with yearly updates with their franchises and try to pass them as new games when really they've only worked on the game for a few months, tweaked some of the game modes, change the way the inter-face looks, give it a sub-name and then charge full price for it. There are people who fall for it.
If I buy one of these games, I then wait about 4 years before I buy another from that same franchise, so that way I there is noticeable difference between the two.

hell yeah bamf, I agree with you on that one. I know the cool cutscene probably took weeks to create and the developer felt really proud about it, but that's no excuse for making me watch it again and again just coz I wasn't fast enuf on the trigger or because the boss fires too many cheap shots (Legendary, Silent Hill:Homecoming)
Hmmm I have no idea if I have any pet peeves, ima have to get back to u on this one lol
i hate in shooters when ur dumped into a levell on ur own without any teammates. it annoys me because i know no one could kill everysingle person in an enemy base
â¢I hate paying $60 to beta test glitchy games until they feel like patching it. Games used to be complete when they were released, but now dev's get to shove unfinished crap into our systems. I understand a stability patch if a game needs it, but if a game gets a patch the first day it is out it makes you wonder if the devs ever even played the game before shipping it.
â¢Long intro sequences. I dont need to watch the opening movie for 30 seconds every time i boot up. Let me skip the opening sequences after i have a save game, that way we both win.
â¢Putting the "new save game" option at the top of the list. In Far Cry 2 i have about 15 saved games because i save in a hurry and forget to scroll down one box. Put the 'new save game' option at the bottom where it belongs.

Yeah that another one for me. I hate it when the devs have game testers who have probably reported certain issues only to be ignored and the game gets released with these issues because the game has to be released on schedule
I for one hate yearly sports games!!! I'll give you a few reasons:
1. It get's expensive to buy the new version every year.
2. They could get A LOT more done if they had time to just add to the existing game and update them. Instead of making a whole new one in a year, they need to give support to the current game. Such as madden, they need to stop trying to add different gimmicks every year into a whole new game and just make the existing one better. They have a winning formula, but they should keep the rosters very up to date, add more content and fix the issues that are there, instead of making a new game with more issues.
Another pet peeve I have is that developers rarely listen to what actual gamers have to say. You could go onto a majority of message boards and it's usually got some ideas that every loves and wants. The developers say, oh, we've been reading what people want and then they come out with something that is supposed to new and innovative and great, but it sucks and nobody wants it. Then they wonder why their games don't sell.
The last pet peeve that I can think of is EXPENSIVE downloadable content! Guitar Hero and Rock Band are the biggest culprits! $2 for a song? I mean, come on? That's insane! We get over 80 songs in a $60 game but we have to pay $2 bucks for 1? I want to be able to expand a song library of hundreds of songs but I'd have to sell both my kidneys and a testicle for that! And some games it costs $5 for a costume or some type of skin pack? That just seems insane to me. I usually don't buy that stuff but if it was cheaper, I wouldn't mind laying down some extra change for a some add-ons.
I hear u one sports games, I don't play them anymore because of that. I'm thinking they could just take Madden and patch it with the new players and stats and voiceovers for about 3 years before they need a new one.
that's why its cheeper to buy the item in a bundle, if it comes in one
like the other day when i FINALLY bought super stardust HD, i bought the bundle that came with the game and both expansion packs for $15
but that is however a game and expansion packs
but they have been comin out with full albums on RB & GH
those are relatively the same price as a cd
so it's not too bad
That's why I try to get the PC versions of them. You just edit the rosters with updates or edit them yourself from year to year. NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007 is the best hockey sim ever devised but you have to update the rosters, affiliations, leagues, etc., every year.
And EA has been screwing the PC gamers the past few years with their sports titles.
Also agree about RB and GH with the songs. Would be nice if you could transfer songs from your IPod, PC, MP3 player, or whatever.
Although I agree that Rock Band DLC is somewhat over-priced (it should be $1-$1.50, depending on how many you buy at one time), they are hardly the worst offenders.
There are games which charge huge amounts to unlock items which you can unlock if you play the game; those are the worst offenders.
My biggest pet peeve is when the damn game boasts AMAZING graphics and then it comes out and it's glitchier than hell. I also hate when reviewers become too anal about a game. I feel that is a game being made had goals that it wanted to achieve and they were achieved and the technical parts about it are working right then it deserves a 100. Take mirror's edge… I believe it achieved what it was trying to achieve but it got reviewed low for being too trial and error. Who didn't see that coming? I think ME was great.
that or when it has amazing graphics and the gameplay sucks
Man, you know what one of my pet peeves is? When it's after midnight and officially February 2, 2009 and the Killzone 2 review isn't up at my favorite site. That really grinds my gears.
LMFAO, i'm waiting for it too, I need to go to bed…
LOl Hellz Yea
Probably waitin' for midnight pacific.
Well it's midnight pacific…
This man is right…..now I am pissed .
True man. Its almost the 3rd here in Australia and still nothing … has the hype machine run out of gas?
Come on! I'm dying to read the review!!
YEAH!!!! where the fu**ing review
Really bad games that will forever cost the same as good/great ones.
I know they still gotta' try make some 'munnyz' back and not lose too much but seriously.
I hate it when people blow money on something where there's another similiar thing for the same price that probably is a lot better.
🙁
I've probly got a million but let's start with these for now:
As a writer I'm a language nut, but subtitles force me to read them so I turn them off to focus on the action taking place in the scene BUT at various points they speak so low I can't hear a damn thing.
Also in that milieu is anybody who insists that at every turn "The english voice acting sucks so I always turn on the original Japanese and then read the subtitles" It's like just shut up and listen to it in the language you speak, you have no clue if the Japanese acting is better unless you grew up with that language, know it inside and out, have an appreciation for Japanese acting styles, etc and so forth. It doesn't make you hardcore or better than everyone else.
It's not always because people think they are hardcore that they change to the Japanese voices. I always feel that a lot is lost in the English Translation. Take Valkyria Chronicles. There is a very emotional song that just doesn't sound right when it is sung in English. Oh well… It's just preference I guess.
i agree with you on the subtitles, but sometimes its not because they talk low, its cause they say something and i couldn't quite understand it cause of the way the character said it
but the voice acting in japanese can sometimes actually "fit" the character better than the english voiceovers
however, i find that this mostly applies to anime and not games
for instense, FFX and FFVII: Advent Children both had terrific voiceovers
because the developers and crew took their time in finding a voices that fit the characters
anime on the other hand usually has mediocre to bad english voice acting (it can have bad japanese also)
BLEACH is the perfect example, because i find that the english acting is ok, and most of the english voices "fit"
but the japanese voice acting is far superior in BLEACH
I get what you mean about certain voices and songs, and I agree as far as that, but if something is lost in the translation then it is lost in the subtitle translation too, if you speak the language and can catch the story better then I have no beef with you. It's just that people assume one must be better than the other, for all we know Japanese folks think they picked a horrible person to fit that role.
actually i only know a couple of japanese words lol
but i get the overall point of were the story is progressing…. and thats the most important thing
talk about terrible japanese voice acting….
have you ever heard DBZ in japanese???
OMG it will make your ears bleed and you will soil yourself, all while your dying of laughter
hahaha 😉
Fanboys and racists.

You know what really grinds my gears? When games take a really long time to start up or load levels (lookin' at you LBP), and when you can't skip the sreens that advertise the publisher/developer/engine used.
Off topic but the resident evil demo is on the japanese ps store, the best part is that the demo is in english.
i agree with you on how reviewers only care about "innovation"
what ever happened to playing a game just cause it was fun
look at God of War…. it wasn't really THAT innovative…. the reason it was so great is because it was just so damn fun that you couldn't put it down for 5 seconds
another pet peeve of mine is how everybody is boycotting SE just cause they sold their souls to M$
granted, i did feel betrayed when they announced that FF13 was gonna be on 360….
i hated that SO much
but heck, at least its still ON the PS3
i will buy FF13 regardless of its exclusive status or w/e
and i will buy FFvs13 cause i think it looks even sweeter 🙂
if you don't buy it because of betrayel, or cause SE is neglecting the PS3…. well that's just stupid
if, on the other hand, FF13 actually turns out to be crappy, then i could see not buying it, cause that would be a waste of money to buy a crappy game
however i highly doubt that FF13 or FFvs13 will suck…. i mean come on…. ITS FF!!!
That's Qwarktastic too 😉
Hah.
ooh, i have another one
how everybody thinks that games need to be online and or co-op
look at bioshock
amazing and immersing experience…. a truly great game
yet it did not have online or co-op
some games do NEED it though, but not necessarily both
a few people a getting pissy now that they find out that Killzone 2 doesnt have co-op
so what? at least it DOES have online
and while it is nice that MK vs DC has online, its still so much better to play with your friends at home…. cause then you can rub it in their face after you open up a can of whoop@$$ on them! lol 🙂
Again,it is SE's treatment that is leading to the boycott, not the multiplatform issue.
having to wait over a year for a game in Japan to be released in the UK.
arrogant gamers.
5GB installs.
having to pay for silly little things on the PS store rather than unlocking them on the game, thats not how gaming works!!!
exclusives bouncing onto the 360.
First person shooters. and how the players perspective is not above the shouldersand neck, but from the torso, Mirrors Edge was close to sorting this out but when you look down you just see her legs, when you should really see her chest ( i'm not being perverted, honest.)
Thats about it i think.
I hate:
-How in most FPS games, the gun doesn't move at all when running, just stays completely steady.
-When gameplay rules/limitations only apply to you, but none of the other enemies (boosting in Xenosaga).
-Easy games without harder difficult levels.
-Invisible walls (don't we all)?
-Action being entirely prioritized over depth.
Mmmh, what really pet peeves me is:
1. Online Cheaters – people who use every glitch and cheat they can get to have an advantage in game. What about fair play? Even shooters are E-sports and E-sports are sports. Do they use 10cm spike shoes while playing football?
2. Restrict or cut games. Hellooo! What´s the point about cutting game scenes or play in games desinged for mature people? I think its a good thing to protect minors from playing games that are not designed for their age. But if something is 17+ or here in Germany 18+. Keep your scissor away. Games are like art and need the same protection. The protection of the minors is designated to their parents and the guy who sells the game (hopefully not to minors)
3. Well this is new, but very annoying. Online bad and nasty speaking and the lag of players attitude to come along with each other. Example: Socom. When its around twelve in Germany on Sunday, it´s Saturday evening in the US. Ok guys come over and play. If they join a German team the want all of the team to speak English instantly. If a German is on their side and is not skilled enough in English they just vote him out. Well I don´t say they are all the same, but it happens to often. If you don´t want to fair or team play with us, stay out of the German speaking rooms! Another example which matches all nations. The number of people who are agressiv and offend others online increases day by day. See "HOME" – and we PS3 users can call us lucky – just jump in a Online 360 match of CoD for 10min. I´m sure even you will learn some new words. The pitty is there´s nothing we can do about.
Huh. Lemme see if I can think of some.
Lazy publishers that give one side of the coin something on a game and doesn't give the other side the same effort. Trophies from Namco Bandai, namely. I don't know WHY this bothers me, but it does. A lot.
Dev teams not taking advantage of DLC. FREE DLC. Why not do more nerdy crap for gamers like new cars, new weapons, new clothing and stuff for games like GTAIV? New songs? Updated radio news? Stuff like that that'll keep people playing the game after they've finished it.
Dev teams taking advantage of PLAYERS with DLC. Again, Namco Bandai. EA. LucasArts. Pointless DLC — some of which is ALREADY ON THE DISC, and they're charging us to unlock it. LAME.
Doing what's required of you in the game but it doesn't work. That irritates me to no end.
FPS games in general. I might be having a blast with Bioshock and World at War's Nazi Zombie thing, but… FPS games are overly generic. For the most part they have paper-thin plots, horrible animation, even worse voice-acting, and don't really do anything for me at all. Feh.
Football games that aren't Tecmo Superbowl.
Gamers that think Dead or Alive was a quality fighting game. Sorry, but… no.
The lack of 2D sprite based games really irritates the crap outta me. Just 'cause you're game has millions of shiney polygons doesn't mean it looks better than a 2D sprite based game that has far superior animation. hehhh.
Being juggled to death in Tekken 5. Yuck. Of course, Juggling someone is fun, so I suppose it balances.
Game sites not covering fighting games nearly at all. Game magazines, too.
Not enough horror games. NEED. MOAR.
Dead or Alive was a quality… booby game though.
Damn, Tecmo Football was such a great game(s). I remember playing the first one on the NES, but am a little hazy about playing one on the SNES.
Yeah, Dev's definitely need to stop with the whole "Analog is next-gen" mentality…
RE5 has a massive install apparantly
One thing that is really pissing me off right now is exclusive DLC. I feel so ripped off when I buy a game for one system and the other system gets exclusive DLC. (Fallout 3 I'm looking in your direction)
I think all games should have fully customizable controls. I know different devs like to have their controls a certian way, but gamers do too. It's not a hard thing to put into a game, so just DO it!
Having to create an extra account to play an online game, Like Metal Grear Online.
That's all I can think of for now. I'm still really pissed off about the fallout 3 DLC
yeah kz2 review would be nice right about now
I hate that no one cares about the D-pad anymore.
