Ah well, perhaps we were hoping for too much. Sony did change their minds concerning their view of the force feedback option as a "last-gen feature" – yep, we got the Dual Shock 3 now – so we thought Sony might backtrack again on the backwards compatibility debate.
Several recent rumors began to support the idea that Sony might be wavering on their initial claim, the one that said they want to focus on the future and continue to keep PS2 b/c out of the PS3. Some sources claimed Sony was searching for PS2 emulation possibilities (the PS3 can play PS1 games, but it can no longer support PS2 software), but according to an e-mail they sent in reply to TheKoalition, this just isn't true. Here's the message that kills the speculation:
"When we removed backwards compatibility from PS3, we said that it would not be coming back as our priority was to make great next generation games. I am not sure where you are getting your information from, but at no point did we say that there would be some sort of emulation being brought to PS3. At no point has this strategy changed and therefore I can tell you that there are no plans to bring back backwards compatibility to PS3. I think you will agree that the list of 1st party exclusive games for PS3 is growing quickly and the quality of them is great. Games such as LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, GT5: Prologue and the up-coming Killzone 2 show that we are very serious about bringing exciting, innovative and fun games to PS3."
Bah. Oh well, that's why those of us with extensive PS2 libraries have a PS2 sitting next to the PS3, right? If you don't, we strongly suggest picking up one of those slim, sleek PS2s for only $130; it's a purchase you won't regret if you still love to play your old games. And when Sony said PS2 b/c for the PS3 was gone, they meant it.
Honestly people have no one to blame but their selves, they complained about the price of the PS3 so SONY found a means to drop it. At least the system is still Top notch, with more gigs i might add.

i dont know much about the matter, but honestly, how much would it cost to be able to play ps2 games?
all it would take is an emulater program. they only run off dvds dont they?
the ps3 can play dvds. i would have thought playing a ps1 game would have been alot tougher.

really want backwards compat, and so do a lot of my friends, only just finding out about how mgs is amazing from mgs4 i wanted to get 2 and 3 but i can't 🙁
got friends who are day-1-ers. the bunch of braggin bigots; aside from that, i don't have ps2 games, and my sisters have LBP, Burnout and simpsons, they're sort of fine.

The only thing that bugs me about by 60Gb (now 500 Gb) launch system is that it runs much louder and hotter than the 40 Gb (now 160 Gb) system I bought for my father.
That, and the fact that it doesn't have any USB ports in the rear (not that any do, but they should).
I might fire up a PS2 game in my sleek 60GB right now…

60GB ps3 also dropped to 500 later on.
that's 100 dollar more than now.

i was going to wait on the price drop but i heard sony will discontinue it. i went and bought the 60GB and overkilled Resistance1 and patiently waited for more games to come out.
I also bought a xbox360 at the time to play gears of war and other minor xbox exclusive titles.

Makes sense, they are expecting PS2 to start to die soon so I'm sure Sony just wants to attract people to the new generation since that's where the AAA software will be.
In a way, all those who are moaning about no PS2 b/c are silly; why the hell would you want to play those old PS2 games when there is BETTER, NEW GEN games out there FOR THE PS3? Thats exactly what i'd think if i had a 60GB with a bunch of PS2 games. As long as they have a great PS3 line up [which they do], i'll be fine.

Good games are good games. I don't care what system they're on. Heck, I'm still buying new PS2 games even though I have a PS3. I can't understand how somebody could think that having a PS3 eliminates the need to play PS2 games. You'll miss out on some great games that way (Persona 4 comes to mind).

Honestly, I have a 60GB and I boot up a PS2 every 6 months for 5mins…..with all the great games available now, who has the time to play the current and the past? (unless you wish to pass on the current)

The good thing is they are putting a strong focus on getting some great games out.
Considering these QUALITY PS3 games are mostly sequels who'se prior games were on PS2 I still think that is a DUMB MOVE… -.- I have the 60gb and I love the B/C I am going to dread the day when I need a new PS3. Thank goodness Sony isn't Microsoft.

Ps2 is a legend in sales but Sony needs to promote their shiny black box even more!
Personally, never needed b/c for my ps3. I got my 80 but never took much advantage of it. I still play wit my ps2 once in a while; old metal gear, splinter cell series and racing. Just firing up my old archic systems brings a childish feeling back again.

Well the b/c was really useful when all there was to play was resistance, but I really don't use it anymore (I'm not even sure where my old games are anymore) So I guess I could part with it for the right offer…. anybody want to drop a grand on a day one 320gb ps3? 😉
if you wanna play ps2 games, pick up a freaking ps2 system, simple and easy and guess what guys? it doesn't use so much power like the ps3 does and it will not use the ps3's life span. smart choice.
