It was one of the best games of 2008, and secured awards for Best FPS and Best Multiplayer Game in PSX Extreme's Game of the Year Awards ceremony. But hey, you can always make a great experience even better, as Insomniac has lifted the veil on a new patch for Resistance 2 .
Patch 1.40 will be available on Monday, January 26, and it will automatically download when you attempt to play the game. It's a monster fix-it update, as the first thing the patch targets is the unfortunate happenstance of players having their online rank reset to Level 1. This patch will remedy that situation, and in some cases, will restore your lost XP, stats and attributes and give you everything you should've earned since you lost your levels. The patch also changes how some Trophies are earned, there will be new Clan features, they've instituted some "Match Balancing" procedures, and more changes and upgrades have been made to the Competitive and Cooperative modes. As for weapon alterations, the splash damage on the Pulse Cannon can now damage the player firing it, the Rossmore reticule "better reflects its accuracy," fire is easier to get rid of, and players can't switch weapons in the midst of a melee attack. For the entire list, head on over to the official PlayStation blog to read Insomniac Community Manager Brian Intihar's detailed post.
Resistance 2 is the best FPS available right now as far as we're concerned, but it probably only has a few weeks left in its reign. Killzone 2 comes out on February 27 and then, as great as R2 is…well, you'll see.

Av just started playing this again. (the online mode)
Best FPS available? R2 is glitchy, has a paper thin story and the single player campaign feels like it's on rails. The first is still far superior, this one feels rushed and stale to me.
If BioShock had multiplayer it'd put R2 to shame.
Roll on Killzone 2, then we can have a proper FPS to play.

"R2 is glitchy, has a paper thin story and the single player campaign feels like it's on rails."
None of that is true. It never glitched on me in the slightest (and I've seen no such complaints in any review I've ever read), the story is no more "paper-thin" than it was in the original, and the single-player campaign boasts about twice the diversity and general intensity, with the added bonus of far better pacing.
Not sure what you people are talking about when it comes to bashing R2. I really don't get it.
@Ben
The only complaint that I had with R2 was that my fiancé and I could not sit down and play through the story together and that really was a let down for me and her. Past that I loved the game.
Yes, the lack of offline split-screen co-op was a detriment, I admit.
But there were VERY few flaws in that game. That's all I'm saying.
I must be the only one that didn't like the "cartoony" graphics in this game. Some areas darn near looked like cell-shading.
The gameplay was fun (except for the cheap deaths) and online was awesome but I already traded this game in, Cmon Killzone!
I thought it was potentially the best FPS. I had gripes about the fire on multiplayer. You were practically dead if you were incinerated. The proper speed was designated as a perk too…C'mon man! Your gonna cripple my speed until I increase my berserk? Ya just cant do that to someone that just came off of Cod.
All in all I think this sucker would have hands down been just what the doctor ordered; if not for the tiny problems on top, maybe stronger weapons.
i never trade a game in. for the simple fact, my local retails, will buy my game for $15 aud.
when i paid >$90 aud. then they will resell it for anything between $60-$100 aud.
then they have these things "Trade 3 ps3 games in, and get this game for HALF PRICE!!!"
uhhh…okay? lol
on topic.
resistance 2, never glitched for me, it was a step up to the original, and thats all it was.
when the heat wave here ends (anywhere around 40 degrees celcius everyday) ill start playing my ps3 again, cuz atm im scared it will melt.
Honestly when i played the beta it didnt really get my attention (SORRY) Im just waiting for K2 and then hopefully that will satisfy me then my next game would be COD6, so pretty much my year is complete with those two games…. When i get bored ill play some COD4 cause WAW suks!!!
Uh oh!!! I need to hurry up and finish this on hard…you can play the last level on Superhuman and unlock OMGWTFBBQ trophy without playing the whole thing! I"M SURE IT WILL BE FIXED IN THE UPDATE!!!
Hope they change killing machine trophy , its hard as hell. I don't like that they removed vehicles completely, and also should have left the original wepons on top of the new ones. The chicago map online is hard to see (not fun).
i have never seen an issue with this game, i like the game but i still like the first one way more.
yea i dont know where the bashing is coming in… im def. amped bout killzone 2 as well as everybody but there is no doubt in my mind R2 is the one of the better FPS right now, i dont play it to much as of late but that dont mean it is not good, i also found no glitches in the game and personally i thought the story followed the first one well enough to make a better story… but i also liked the first resistance multiplayer better as well. the only complaint i have bout R2 is for whatever reason i dont like the selection process or process of finding a game online! anyways good to hear theres a patch!

only glitch i encountered was the level reset glitch, and im hoping my level 30 soldier returns and they said if your person resetted and you already started playing another one, its gonna add it all together, the reset is the main reason i had stopped playing it
These are the kind of patches that are appreciated, releasing a screwed up game and then fixing it bothers me to no end. Resistance 2 was not a screwed up game, this patch is a useful improvement and not a band-aid imo.
i have a question about the solute me trophy, do i get that by doing single player campaign or do i get that by getting level 31 in co-op or competitive?? its in the single player trophies so ive bin assuming that i get it in single player but if thats the case i have a LONG way to go. ive beat it 5 times and only made it to level 10 so far.
the co-op is actually more fun that i originally estimated. ive only just recently started playing the co-op and its great.
i suppose i could just play a level over and over till i get the level i need to get the trophy but thats no fun.

I just hope they fix the weapon balancing. I refuse to be one of the dozens upon dozens that run around with an anti-tank weapon like the Wraith, or Pulse Cannon. I don't think they should be made weaker but the Carbine and Battle Rifle is that they should be a bit more powerful.
