It's really the only visible drawback in Killzone 2 , and despite any erroneous reports you may have heard, Guerilla has no plans to implement a co-op campaign.
Although most realize that this feature won't be included in the game, multiple sources have hinted at the possibility of an upcoming patch that would deliver co-op play for the hotly anticipated shooter. But thanks to a PSU interview with game director Mathijs de Jonge, the rumors have been dispelled and we have the final word: no, it's just not coming. Said de Jonge-
"Currently there are no plans for co-op in Killzone 2. Technically it would be quite difficult to implement it for the story mode as for example the mission sections are loaded in seamlessly no loading screens , and that would cause issues with teleporting players. Even without co-op its still a big game and gamers will have plenty to sink their teeth into."
Yeah, one has to realize that KZ2 isn't exactly like other games, and we get the feeling that Guerilla doesn't want to do anything that might cause the overall quality of Killzone 2 to drop. The big question is, would you rather have a somewhat inferior co-op mode, or would you rather it not exist in the first place? The bottom line is that the single-player mode will be plenty epic, and the online multiplayer should satisfy even the most hardcore FPS fan. You needn't worry about that. Just don't expect co-op, 'cuz KZ2 ain't gonna have it. You can't get everything , you know.

Interesting, but no matter, I can live without coop, I just wanna play it already!!
That's a bummer, I was disappointed when R2 didn't have the co-op main campaign too. Oh well, I'm sure it'll still be a great game.
Well… R2 had something even better… an all new co-op campaign!
A little bit of a bummer but yea I am thinking I would rather not have one than have an inferior one.
Resident Evil 5 is a game I'd rather not have co-op. This is a game that ought to have it. Heads are incorrectly screwed from my perspective.
Can't wait to see people say that KZ2 has better graphics than Gears 2. People blind to the fact more resources can be spent on the look of the campaign for single player.
Amen on RE5, I'm worried about having a tag-along.
though ppl will be saying that it has better graphics i doubt geow fans will ceases to the idea of geow looks better.
Yes I think killzone 2's graphics are miles better then gears single or co op wise. Gears 2 has horrible co op all they do is split you up on tiny paths or keep you very close together to save resources. Also killzones 2's cutscenes are All real time rendered, they would have to go in and add the second player in all the cutscenes.
I am ok about co-op not being available… let's get the game and play it already!

i can imagine it now
"The only real lacking feature is the co op mode"
rather just not put it in
My guess is that the lack of support of coop has more to do with it being a heavy consumer of resources like server sessions or connection pools. For example, in a coop single player campaign, you'll have at most 4 players (with exception in R2 with it's mini-campaigns), consuming a resource for like 5-8 hours. Where as in competitive, you can have 100's of players able to share the same resource within the same time frame. So my guess, is in xbox live, they are able to provide such an infrastructure that can support such coop, where as, not so in Psn.
im not big into coop anyway, ive never really done a coop game except for combined assault.
I don't do co-op anyhow, bringgg ittt onnnn.
I wonder how the class system will work, yes coop would be nice hope fully they add it but from looks it seems as if the game is epic without it.
there is a pretty informative interview on gametrailers for killzone so go check it out. i like the sounds of the multi player, goes seemlessly from game type to game type, cool idea.
Not interested in Co-op. Single person shooter for storymode, and online multiplayer to kill all those bastards.
It's possible to do a co-op side story with the online multiplayer models.GG could make some decent cash doing this.
Am I the only remaining individual on the planet that really and truly enjoys offline coop and multiplayer (by the way, the article never addresses offline multiplayer competitive, but I'll assume it's not gonna be packaged with KZ2)?
Does anybody else see this trend of more single-player experiences as a problem? We seem to be turning more and more reclusive as time goes on. Video games are a fantastic social activity, but wouldn't we all prefer to socialize with our friends rather than whoever else is online that we may or may not ever see again?
Ya always have W@W. But I still prefer its predecessor.
I'm with ya, Phoelix.
I hear ya man. I don't really do much single player FPS'ing, and i haven't jumped on this Online bandwagon yet. I really miss the days of hanging out with some friends and rockin some split screen action. RFOM was awesome for it, friend and I tore through it and we were so disappointed when we plugged in R2 and there was no co-op campaign. That was the only reason we bought the damn game. sigh.
IMO, for offline cooperative games there are Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
I can't stand the split screen.
I'm with ya to, I love offline Co-op and I always try to buy games that feature it.
Looks like us people with friends are going to have to find a new hobby. Soon gaming REALLY WILL only be for the social rejects.
And now we see why the Wii sells so much. Screw being a "hardcore" gamer. I'd rather have friends and a life.
Yeah, right again Troy. *sigh* I miss the old days.
I completely agree with all of you (with the exception of pavlovic). About an inferior co-op vs. no co-op it would matter to what degree of being inferior. I would gladly accept any co-op Guerilla would be willing to put out, because I know it would be at least half decent. Killzone 2 will be epic regardless, but the co-op would have been the icing on the cake. I guess the Xbots will have another "bad" thing to say about K2…

I fine without coop. I think its great to let the game stand on its own single player feet. I believe thats what guerilla want. What would be graet is that they work on an expansion pack with 60-70 mission that u can play coop varying from 1 – 4 and also play single also add new places, weapons & release it next year.

I rarely even played Coop on any other FPS. I liked Cod W@Ws take on Coop with the competitive side to it. But it isn't something that keeps me coming back. I still play Cod4 and that doesn't have it.
I still want my system link though!!!!
This is an xbot's dream, read: "Pshh that game don't even got no co-op man" If you are quiet you can hear them jibber jabbering away.
hmm, can't say I'm too happy about this. I put co-op WAY ahead of online competitive.
I very quickly lose interest in online deathmatches
Learn to live with it, that's exactly what we want to hear from someone with a voice. It's another sad day for co op, which is all but dead at this point.
co-op mode not even on the list for me ..never use it on any game
Some of us have rael life friends that we can play with. That is the only reason why i love halo and gears
killzone 2 got a 9/10 from uk official magazine. Apparently it got a 9 because of no co-op and long loadng times.
The game director just said there are no loading times in this article. What loading times are they referring to?
srry got this info from gt forums. Must of been an xbot chatting s***
The fact that it got a 9/10 tells you how good the game is even if it's lacking any type of coop.

For those harboring desires for offline co-op, lets hope somone buys into Free Radical and gets Timesplitters back in the game.
That was the king of co-op.
Pssh, I just might shell out some money from my pocket if thats what it takes to get offline co-op back
I love that features that should be expeted in modern games get cut by devs with awful track records, and people don't question them.
It's one thing to expect a game like MGS4, or GTA, or any game by a dev with a good track record, but to have hopes for a dev that has only proven to underdeliver…
Color me disappointed. First on my list of most wanted features for shooters is offline multiplayer (versus, with bots). If I can't get that, then I'll take offline co-op against the AI. If you have neither, you lose a point with me. I've been one of the most vocal KZ2 cheerleaders here, but with this news, I could not give the game higher than a 9/10.
Actually, going strictly according to my hardline stance against shooters and racers without split-screen, I would have to pass on this game. Thank gawd my gf pre-ordered it for me, so (technically) I'm not buying it. I guess KZ2 has found a loophole.
Personally, I think this omission is a slap in the face to any gamer with real-life friends.
Killzone 2 is still going to be a fantastic game, but pardon me as I hop off the bandwagon.
Hell yeah! good thing I didnt pay full price for KZ2…So im basically not paying for what should have been co-op. My cousin and I was so hopeful of this game.
We still play the first Killzone together to this day. That game was sweet in co-op.
Thats just sad Troy. Turnin your back because you dont have the opportunity to keep reviving your kamikaze friends.
honestly, no offense to people here, but i think people are making a stench out of nothing. i play with my real life friends all the time online, its the same thing really, especially with a headset. minus the craptacular split screen, always had a dislike for split screen.
Sure some dont have a ps3 but i would think this is a good enough reason to get one. id much rather play Gears 2 on my own xbox 360 without having to share a screen with my friends, but thats just me.
Co op would have been nice for this game, but its not the end of the world

Well Aaron you make it sound like its easy to come out of your pocket with $399 big ones. If friends were that willing to get a PS3, wouldn't they have done so?
Fact is, most CAN'T afford one, so the next best thing is them to play with a friend on their system. And what about people who still can't receieve broadband because of their location (Like me, i require a 15 minute drive to my aunt's house when playing online)?
And lets say one day your connection messes up and playing online is basically impossible, but you still have a craving to play with a friend on Army of Two?
Hell why do you think Rock Band, Guitar Hero and the Wii in general are all successful? Because its catered to group activites!
Like i give a ****. On PS3, online competitive is WAYYY more important to me. If there's no co-op, im inclined to beleive more focus will/has been paid to Competitive and story mode which will only make them better.
I couldn't care less.
The offline cooperative isn't much a thing, when we have a video game party, you can be sure that we are not playing a FPS, even if its killzone.
The online cooperative mode, is one that I really hate. When you log on, you find a game and always there is one or two people that have already go trough the stage and they just run leaving you behind. Happened to me on RE:Outbreak, R2, Gears 1, W@W. So in not logging on again to play cooperative.

I don't need a co-op campaign, but dang! No online co-op? That friggin' stinks! R2 campaign was ok, and deathmatch is deathmatch, but the co-op is what made that game the top of my list. I thought maybe, just maybe KZ2 was going to bring it, but it turns out it's just another shooter.
Ye got my issue of OPM:UK, its a 9.
Why only a 9 – what was their biggest problem with it?
