Hey, we didn't notice before, but if you haven't already signed up to play Metal Gear Online yet, now's the time.
As GameSpy reports, Konami has announced a "Welcome Rookie Campaign" for their online tactical shooter, and it gives users who sign up between December 24, 2008 and February 16, 2009 a special codec pack that features new voice content and 5,000 in-game reward points. The points can be used to pick up goodies for your character, but remember, this is only available to new members. If you want to try it out before registering, feel free to download the demo on the PlayStation Network; it will be there until January 29. Here's part of the press release concerning the Welcome Rookie Campaign:
The exclusive Welcome Rookie Campaign is only open to players who have not previously installed and registered the retail version of Metal Gear Online on their PLAYSTATION 3 entertainment system. Some of the game items that can be purchased from the MGO shop are only available to those who have purchased the Metal Gear Online Expansion Packs. For more information please visit: http://www.konami.jp/metal/mgo/.
Fans who have never played Metal Gear Online have the opportunity to download a free version now thru January 29th. The free demo, along with a free Metal Gear Solid 4 demo, are available on the PlayStation Network."
Most hardcore fans of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and the franchise in general have probably already signed up, but there are a great many of you who haven't just yet. If you're wondering how Metal Gear works online, you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity and nab that free demo. If you like it, you've got over a month to get your greedy hands on that "Welcome Rookie Campaign." So head online and give it a shot!

Do you need to have MGS4 to play it? I know it's a shock I don't have it but for some reason I never got into MGS.
of course lol, like saying do you need call of duty to play it online :p
but i will tell you this, its a piss take signing up, took me a while and then wouldn't even accept it!! so i gave up and haven't tried since
I read that as do you need Metal Gear to play the demo lol maybe it was just me 🙂
mgo sucks lol
No you.
Anyways, I think this is a BIT unfair to users who are already signed up. 5,000 MGO points is a good amount of swag, plus those codec messages. But oh well, this just means more target practice >:)
id play mgo cause i think its totally awsome but until i play a game where everyone has mics and uses teamwork to the scale that we do on socom, ill stick with socom.
I heard Socom lags alot online. Thats the only thing that kept me from picking it up. how is it online?
honestly the game works great for me. i have minimal problems. sometimes sure you do run across a laggy room but its not nearly as bad as everybody blows it up to be. like i said game works great for me. and sometimes the lag is because the host of the room has a bad connection, its not alway the servers and crap. the only people that whine and complain and blow it all up are the people that shouldnt play games if their looking for perfection.
@ PS3_Wizard
I've only played it twice; the first game (16 v 16) was like a slide-show, but the second game (8 v 8, later that night) was fine.

o
Kojima just wanted to finish his brilliant story. The game turned to be a game 4 die hard mgs fans. I think the online mode is awsome just need to buy my own copy before the hole seen fizzles out. Oh i forgot the japanese r playing it so the competition is going to stick around just like RIDGE RACER7 there is tons of asian guys playing it even today.
i liked that game but its hard to keep track of everything. they shoulda had a simpler car class and upgrade system. i like how you unlock parts and stuff but start to lose track of what i have and stuff after so long and it kills it for me. i shoulds try and beat it again someday.
I think online playing is not for me
Only online games I really care for are Warhawk, Resistance co-op, Gran Turismo, and Street Fighter.
Not too into anything else. I've lost my love for Motorstorm online too.
i think that's complete crap. the die hard, go out and buy it as soon as it comes out fans were just screwed over royally.
Cool cool I hope lots of people download it. I can use the experience. Keep an eye out for DargonSlayer
i don't MGO sucks but i do feel if MGO was ran through the PSN than it would of been up there with COD.. But thats why people say it sucks because iyou have to go through all the BS to get online …
I like MGO, yeah it took ages to sign up but once your done your done. As someone said a while ago. Some things are just worth waiting for.
Not everyone is gonna like MGO online, same way as not everyone likes PS3's, 360's or Wii's. I myself personally like all 3 machines. I only thought Resistance 2 was ok whereas a lot of people on here and also not on here loved it.
Once you get Online set up you're good to go very fast everytime you're on. MGO is really damn good, anybody who passes it up despite some early headaches is missing out big time.
Is it still a giant pain to set up your profile(s)?
