LBP Hits 1.3 Million Sold Worldwide

Okay, so maybe it's not the massive sales blockbuster Sony had hoped for, but perhaps it's just a slow starter. And besides, the latest numbers really aren't too shabby at all.

Kaz Hirai had a number of interesting stats to toss around at CES 2009 yesterday, and that includes the announcement of 85% of PS3 owners being online . Well, here's another one: in a LittleBigPlanet update, Hirai says they've sold about 1.3 million copies worldwide, although we can't be 100% certain of the sales numbers in each region. It's still pretty impressive, and Hirai added that users have created over 300,000 new levels…which equates to over two total years of play time. Are there some LBP addicts out there, or is everyone really diving into the player-oriented construction aspects of the game? Well, whatever the reason, we have to call Media Molecule's little platformer that could a legitimate success, even if it never approaches the astronomical sales totals of games like GTAIV and MGS4. And we're very happy to see more gamers out there reward the developers for such a wonderfully accomplished title; it's not every day that you get something like this. And besides, for all you out there who always whine about "no originality" in this generation, well…pay attention!

And remember, because LBP is essentially whatever you want it to be, and it appears as if Sony might actually keep promoting it, this is one game that might never "top out" in terms of sales. Sales will slow down, of course, but it'll be interesting to see how far it can go…

All the custom packs will keep people interested for a long time too, they never really have to stop coming out with stuff kinda like in Home.

I love this game. I don't play it unless my wife plays with me. That is a unique situation.

I play with this game and it plays with me. I make the little sack-girl scratch my back because she's made out of burlap and has rough skin. Rough skin is good for scratching backs. Yah, that's right!

This game is gonna have legs. More and more people will buy it so more and more people will be able to get their back scratched.

lol I had a 12 hour LAN party with me and some of my good mates from school after end-of-year exams last year where we were supposed to play heaps of PC games like CoD4, AoE, CS and stuff but half way through one of mates fired up LBP on the PS3 and NO-ONE was playing on their PC's, it was LBP til the early morning 😀
and what made it more weird is that most of my mates are FPS on PC nuts but I guess the platforming awesomeness that is LBP was far more attractive…

1.3 worldwide??? According to VGChartz, it's like 1.8. Explanation?

Vgchartz is not always 100% correct. Rule of thumb with vgchartz is at least give or take 15%. So if you take 15% the number goes to 1.5 mil and that's closer to what Sony said.

Oh and it's heavily bundled in Europe and vgchartz includes bundled games with their numbers. Sony might have given standalone game sales only. You've got to admit though that 1.3 mil is a nice number for a game that supposedly flopped.

I was originally psyched for this one as I'm a sucker for platform games (blame my age and growing up on super mario bros on the nes) but I've still not purchased it due to alot of comments about a weak single player game (I know, it's not their fault I've got no friends) and cludgey controls (having to repeat jumps over and over makes mongo mad!). It sure would be nice now that they have made some money from this game if they'd put some freakin' playable demo on the PSN! How hard could that be considering the ease of propagating user created levels and such. I don't care about the editing tools at the moment, I just want to actually feel how the game plays and finally lay any doubts to rest and possibly by this game. My December '08 monthly game purchase was Prince of Persia, which I in no way regret, and this month will prob be Skate 2, but there's always February for LBP if they'd convince me by letting me actually play a bit. Just one level! plz!
