Although most all of us will agree that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a defining experience of the generation, it still didn't match the sales numbers of blockbusters like Grand Theft Auto IV and Halo 3 . This is one of the reasons Hideo Kojima has said he wants to "start from zero" in 2009 and find a way to compete with the big boys. This would mean appealing to the Western audiences as well as the Japanese gamers.
But with the ever-increasing interest in the FPS genre in Japan, and its already immense popularity in North America in Europe, Sony expects Killzone 2 to explode. V For Video Games recently spoke to a Sony representative who says they fully expect Guerilla's hugely anticipated title to eclipse the sales mark of MGS4:
"It would be a lie to say Sony has not invested heavily in Killzone 2 and each individual at Guerilla games has worked even harder to satisfy any expectations kept by the company and their loyal community. I do see the game breaking a barrier with a huge variety of groups and expect it to see sales as good as Metal Gear Solid 4 if not beyond it."
Perhaps this won't come as any surprise to some of you, but it'll be interesting to see how Japan responds to a game like this. We're relatively certain that most other parts of the world will all flock to the stores to pick up Killzone 2 , but will the title's obvious quality sway the traditional tastes of the Eastern gamer? How high can it go? Might it even approach the astronomical sales of GTAIV? Quality is great, but Sony wants sales…

well it will happen
By KZ2's launch there would be 23-25m ps3s worlwide
KZ2 will boost sales of ps3s no doubt but it will obviously sell more than MGS4 since PS3 would be having almost 2x the install base
also FPS games have wider appeal in USA and EUROPE and KZ2 is easily the biggest FPS of this gen
KZ2 will break 10m in lifetime sales
MGS4 will break 6m in lifetime sales too
KZ2 10 million? I would be surprised if it broke 6.
The japanese probably wont like it, based on past shooters in japan.
Shooters are more popular in Japan now.
Yea but they liked Haze…
well if they like haze then this game should blow them away and sell them on the fps just like the rest of the world. i would like to get haze actually, i liked the demo and i dont think the visuals were all THAT bad. sure it aint no resistance or gears but it still looked cool to me.

I'm tempted to try Haze if it comes down to twenty dollars.
I just bought Fracture for twenty dollars and its not bad. Its a good looking game.
Metalhead08… I think Haze would probably be quite good; but if I had a choice I would get TimeShift!
Q!
"i aM hOMe"
The haze demo was interesting, but the game sucked! What a waste of my $60.
Sadly, I expect this to be true too. A masterpiece in storytelling being overshadowed by a FPS is an all too frequent occurrence.
And this is from someone who isn't even anti-FPS.
KZ2 is the GOD OF ALL FPS
KZ2 is a masterpiece too
I too have high hopes for the sales of this game.
at least this one is defenetly exclusive forever, wonder if they will do a kz3 just imagine what that would b like
Who gives a chit even if it WASN'T exclusive? It would be a travesty not to buy it if was multiplat.

Well, I guess they REALLY wanted to re-define the FPS genre, otherwise it wouldn't have taken so long…
Why is my hand shaking? Expectations like this make me nervous. Not really but I just don't think my fellow ps3 gamers buy as many games as you'd hope. With the exceptions of milked franchises. I certainly want and hope KZ2 does millions but what is sony's timeframe for it to pass MGS4? A week, month(s), year?

I hope it does surpass Metal Gear 4, I NEED MORE TARGETS
That's crazy, it will never surpass MGS4 sales with it's established worldwide fanbase. I'm just hoping for a high-quality game, great sales and Playstation exclusives don't seem to go hand-in-hand (unless it's a phenomenon viz MGS).
Traded MGS4 a month ago. But I still have COD4. There were ALOT of MGS4 trade-ins on the shelf at GameStop but no COD4….that says what the people want if you ask me.
KZ2 will sell very well, Fact.
That's not really relevant.. you still need to get the game in people's hands first and foremost. I agree that people are less likely to trade in online shooters because they have more replay value and that people will enjoy Killzone 2.. but without proper marketing, they won't even know about the game. Most consumers in the market aren't the guys at PSXExtreme or any gaming website who check reviews etc., they just make impulse buys at what looks like a hot game.
Resistance 2 should have done numbers way closer to Gears 2 if it was marketed correctly. LittleBigPlanet could have been an absolute phenomenon.
Well I don't know about you but I keep the games that I really like and trade the ones I don't.
The only thing Sony has to do now is do a great job of marketing it. It's arguably not even as popular as the Resistance series and Resistance 2 was not exactly burning up the charts. Forget about Japan as a battleground for fps. Obviously they have to focus on the western markets. They've got to take a page out of Msft's book and market it like Halo and Gears. It's a combination of hype that get's early big sales and great reviews that provide the legs for continued sales.
KZ2 is in a league of its own
IT cannot be compared to other shooters
Trust me lot of xbots would buy PS3 just for KZ2
I have full faith that Sony will do yet another horrible marketing job. Microsoft market their products in no particularly clever way, but they do it *enough* for people to take notice; Sony do need to take the same MO if they want bigger sales than MGS4. It's certainly a far more accessible game to the European and American markets, and if they were to really make this game known it could certainly be one of their best-selling games to date.
They need to stop making assumptions like this. This kinda crap is one of the reasons why people think the ps3 is failing. Even if it doesn't sell as many copies as MGS4 I am almost certainly positive that it will sell a lot, but people will still say that it wasn't what Sony was expecting and more doom and gloom talk will commence. Seriously though. This game is looking to kick some serious ass and I can't wait for it!
everyone with a ps3 has to get this game, if you don't then you are letting down the ps3 and dont deserve to have one, simple as.
get behind your console for once and push this game!
its less than two months to KZ 2's release and not one ad on tv. If Sony wants to win the lottery then should'nt they buy a lotto card?
TESTIFY!
"It would be God's honest truth to say Sony has not invested enough in Killzone 2…"
fixed
This game is GIGANTIC! Where the hell is the huge marketing blitz? Sure there's a lot of buzz on the internet and with the hardcore gamers, but karneli is right. Where are the TV commercials? Has ANYBODY seen a single one? Where are the promotions? Jeezus f***ing krist!!! I've promoted this game more than Sony has!
lol…U and me both Troy. But SONY spent loads of $$$ on Guerilla building this engine/game for the PS3. Trust Sony spend the R&D $$$. Now the marketing $$$…IDK.

I agree with you guys above they need to advertise this game to death I think they should start now to get people in the know so they can be ready to purchase it on release day
PSN ID Biggest_GMoney
only time will tell, I played the beta I love it, now I want the single player mode.
Eurogamer have a hands on preview for anyone interested.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/killzone-2-hands-on_6
We had a hands-on weeks ago.
yea….Everyone had a hands-on preview. Early December.
Too much hype and advertising can have detrimental effects to. Look at Halo 3. That game was hyped more than most blockbuster movies. I think everyone expected too much from the game which is why so many people were a little disappointed.
Not to say that people as a whole didn't like Halo 3, I'm just saying everyone I knew and review sites online was expecting a bit more. Yes Sony should make more advertisments, but not as much as microsoft did with Halo 3.
Moderation is key…
The only effect Sony will care about is sales. And for that, moderation is the thing to avoid.
But, yes, once games get overhyped and fail to deliver on something, they get treated like crap. Like the way I look at Fable. More like Fail.
The difference here being that KZ2 LIVE'S UP TO the hype!
remember haze, if it hadn't been hyped so much it would've been accepted and not slated so much
I doubt it, and MGS4 will still be a better game after Killzone 2 is out.
mgs4 is the best game of the generation so far, and although there will be toher good ones, mgs4 is just the best.
That's your opinion…..and your welcome to it.
"The difference here being that KZ2 LIVE'S UP TO the hype"
Oh? You have played and finished it, then?
Yea he has played it.
@Troy
lol. He doubts the potency of the Killzone 2. The Beta was better that most completed $60 games!!

Yes, I've played it. And I'll echo King James in saying that the online beta, which only included 3 boards was more fun and more addictive than most of the PS3 games I have paid full price for. I got Resistance 2 right after getting into the beta, and spent infinitely more time playing KZ2. And R2 was nothing to sneeze at. So, yes, I can confidently say that the beta alone lives up to the hype. They would actually have to PURPOSELY make the final game WORSE in order for it to not live up to the hype.
And, no, I haven't finished it. Haven't had a look at the campaign mode. And, honestly, if they sold this game as a strictly online game with no campaign mode (a la Warhawk), I would gladly plunk down 60 for it.
Ok, apologies. Too often, I see people having such an overconfident view of a game they haven't played, and end up being let down big time.
We can PROMISE you that nobody will be let down by this game. And yes, we've played it…a lot of it.
Metal Gear Solid 2 and indeed 3 were better than Killzone so unless this one does something amazing, I doubt it will even come close to MGS4 that game was just simply brilliant.

Killzone 2, You better believe, the HYPE is REAL!!!
