We had heard whispers about X-Men Origins: Wolverine this past summer; it's both a new movie featuring Hugh Jackman and a video game…apparently featuring Jackman's likeness, if this early screenshot is any indication.
According to GameSpot, Activision has now released the first early details for this new title, which is scheduled to release for all major platforms next year. The console versions are in development by Raven Software – best known for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance – and not surprisingly, X-Men Origins traces Wolverine's history in the film and game. We learn that after surviving the "Weapon X" program, which of course gave him his indomitable internal skeleton, Wolverine escaped to Africa, and that should be where we'll start our adventure. Beyond this, information is a little scarce, but we do know this will be action game "with an emphasis on melee combat," which means we can expect stylish combination attacks and even finishing moves. In other words, if you're expecting a game like Ultimate Alliance , you're gonna be disappointed; if you're open to an all-out action extravaganza, this one could be for you. At the very least, Wolverine needs to be a lot better than 2003's X2: Wolverine's Revenge , which was barely mediocre.
We'll follow along and deliver the updates and details as they become available, but for now, it's enough to know that X-Men Origins: Wolverine will be headed to a store near you in May 2009.
