As most of you well know, Square-Enix has been remaking and off-shooting much of their back catalogue of titles, much to the delight of the old-school fans. But they also have several new IPs on the way, including The Last Remnant for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
So where does the veteran RPG publisher stand on remakes? Well…perhaps it's all in how you interpret Square-Enix president Yoichi Wada's comments, recently delivered to Asashi Shimbun and translated by Kotaku. When talking about the continued success of certain remakes, thereby issuing a low-risk, high-return situation for the publisher in question, Wada had this to say: "The price of games is high, and consumers tend to be wary of buying games they are unfamiliar with. Now, it's possible for consumers to learn a great deal about the content of new titles through the Internet." Well, yes, of course. That's the job of many a video game site out there, and we're certain any gamer anywhere can learn a "great deal" about titles like Remnant in only a few short minutes. But the first part of Wada's comment implies Square-Enix won't abandon the idea of the remake or spin-offs, primarily because with the recognizable name plastered all over the box, it's a guaranteed profit-maker. Now, some of you may ask: if they know this, what exactly is stopping them from making a Final Fantasy VII remake?
Well, cost and time, for a start. But let's not beat that long-dead horse; let's just say Square-Enix's future moves should continue to reflect their desire to please the fans, and to issue a new IP every once in a while. You know, that nifty Internet can always help with the latter.
