John-ShepardAny time we hear about a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3 these days, we wonder if it might be the preferred vehicle for delivering the PlayStation Home open beta. But with the recent rumor information , we're still in "wait and see" mode.
Besides, Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel has already filled us in on the details for firmware update 2.52. It's merely a minor update, but it will increase the playback quality of some PS3 software, and it will also fix a "text entry issue that occurs when using the on-screen keyboard, USB keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard" with certain games. If you were wondering, firmware 2.51 should've been little more than a fix for some problems caused by 2.50, so nothing here can be considered significant. However, with every new update, the PS3's functionality and appeal ratchets up a notch or two, which is a continuous plus for owners of Sony's next-gen console. Whether or not we'll need a new update for Home remains to be seen, but we imagine it would have to be soon if the revolutionary online service really does hit its open beta stride on November 19.
Oh, and please remember that Sony's new user policy says they are not responsible for any system malfunctions caused by mandatory firmware updates, so…download at your own risk. We haven't come across any issues with any firmware in the two years of the system's lifespan, though.
