Ben-DutkaEven though Volition has said in the past they're not worried about anti-game critical backlash concerning Saints Row 2 , they probably didn't want the NYPD on their backs.
New York's finest weren't too happy with Grand Theft Auto IV , either, so it's no surprise to learn they're speaking out against Volition's new crime-infested sequel. Ripten points us towards the Daily News, where NYPD union boss Patrick Lynch issued the now-standard comment in regards to Saints Row 2 : "horrible and violent video games desensitize young people to violence while encouraging depravity, immorality while glorifying criminal behavior…" Yes, yes, we've heard all that before, and no doubt there's some truth to it when we're talking about the younger generation, which is why we have the ESRB. The NYPD clearly believes both GTAIV and SR2 endorse a criminal's life in some way, although even the latest GTA – which was by far the most realistic – remains too cartoon-y to endorse much of anything besides removed, even relaxing entertainment. Finally, we get the feeling that some cops are probably gamers, and they probably played the hell out of GTAIV, which means Saints Row 2 is up next for 'em.
Besides, if Tera Patrick's in it, how bad can it really be? Okay, it just adds to the depraved factor (kinda), but the entire production is designed around that concept, so it works. It's also rated "M" for "Mature," remember?
