Official List Of Supported Formats On PS3

Sony had several announcements prepared yesterday in Japan, and one of them involved the official listing of exactly which formats the PS3 will support.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is pretty impressive, with the "hard" formats supported including Blu-Ray (ROM, -R, -RE), DVD (ROM, -R, -RW, +R, +RW), and CD (ROM, -R, -RW, Super Audio). Then we get to the video, music, and image formats supported by the console, and these will likely look familiar to PSP owners. For video, the PS3 supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (PS, TS), MPEG-4 SP, and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. Audio formats support include ATRAC, AAC, MP3, and WAV. And lastly, the image formats are JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, and BMP.

Most, if not all, of these supported formats were anticipated by those in-the-know, but it's always good to have the official announcement tucked away in your back pocket.
