Ben-DutkaOkay, so yesterday was just a premature slip , as a few PlayStation 3 owners saw the Life With PlayStation application in a Folding@Home update. But now, we have the official press release in our inbox.
Today, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that Life With PlayStation officially arrives worldwide. As stated in the release, it's a "new visual and interactive way to use their PS3 to access news and information from around the world, only possible on the PS3's feature-rich platform." As part of this initial launch, LIVE CHANNEL will be included with the program, and the news and information will be displayed on a "place" and "time" world map interface. It's the live content that will intrigue most; there's cloud imagery (provided by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center), weather details straight from the Weather Channel, news headlines ripped directly from Google, and very cool live camera images (partially provided by the Earth Television Network) "of nearly 60 cities around the globe." All of this is free, folks, and while it may not sound earth-shattering, we have to admit…LIVE CHANNEL sounds like something we'd toy around with.
Care to check it out? Just click that Folding@Home icon – yes, you do need it – and this time, the update that downloads will include Life With PlayStation. This update is also for Stanford's ongoing project as well; it will allow the program to "support more advanced simulation of protein fold, and will also support PS3's unique Folding@Home ranking system." So there you have it: Life With PlayStation is ready to go, and we dare you to nab it, take a look around, and tell us it's not pretty darn sweet. 🙂
