The lack of next-gen RPGs, especially on the PlayStation 3, has disturbed many a long-time fan of the genre. While we all understand it's typically the last category of games to really get rolling in a new generation, the situation is still most reminiscent of a stark, barren, desert wasteland.
But role-playing aficionados cling to a few big titles that loom on the horizon, and for PS3 owners, none is bigger right now than White Knight Chronicles . Certainly expected to be released long before Final Fantasy XIII or Final Fantasy Versus XIII , Level 5's promising RPG has hit news headlines recently for one simple reason: it seems we're getting closer to the release date. And now, several sources, including Kotaku and Magic Box, are reporting that Famitsu has revealed the official Japanese launch date for White Knight Chronicles : December 25, 2008. Obviously, as soon as this happened, everyone scrambled to get a date for North America and Europe, but both Level 5 and Sony are staying quiet on the issue. SCEE told Strategy Informer they have "no information" on a UK date, and SCEA hasn't released any public statements (as far as we can see), either.
However, if the December 25 date for Japan is true, this still sparks plenty of conversation: how much longer before it finds its way to other regions? Will White Knight Chronicles release within a few weeks of that day, or a few months? We are hoping Level 5 answers these questions in due time, but for now, let's just be happy that all signs are pointing towards the completion of this next-gen RPG.
