EA To Market Dead Space Engine To Other Developers?

As most industry followers are aware, the Unreal Engine 3 has made the rounds this generation and is currently one of the most popular techs out there. EA wants a piece of that success, as they're examining the possibility of turning their Dead Space engine into a new middleware tool.

According to an interview with GamePlayer, executive producer Glen Schofield said they're currently speaking with attorneys regarding this endeavor, and they need to name this new engine. If you didn't know, the engine has been used in past titles like The Godfather and From Russia With Love , and in addition to Dead Space , it's going to be used in The Godfather 2 . Schofield remarked on the success of the Unreal Engine 3 and pointed out that development teams have made it even better by adding improved technology over time. We're not sure yet if EA simply intends to use the engine in-house for multiple future projects or offer it to other developers, but we imagine it's the latter. Many top-end studios have already licensed UE3 with good results, and it'd be no surprise to see EA attempt to do the same with this currently unnamed engine.

Dead Space is scheduled to arrive on October 14, and we'll see if this engine is a true next-gen option that would prove beneficial to other developers. We certainly have high hopes for the game; we love the idea of Resident Evil in outer space!
