No JPEGs Supported In LBP, Only PlayStation Eye?

LittleBigPlanet is all about cooperative gameplay and ultimate customization. The appeal is undeniable, but perhaps saying "ultimate customization" is stretching the truth just a bit, if you can't really implement standard JPEGs into the game.

According to a conversation sparked over at the NeoGAF forums, gamers are discovering multiple sets of evidence that point towards one hidden fact: if you want to import pictures into created levels, you'll need the PlayStation Eye to accomplish the feat. The first proof of this is at the official PlayStation Blog, where Chuck Lacson answered the question, "Will I be able to import my cat pics into my created levels?" with, "yes you will! (If you have a PS Eye that is.)" Then, later, someone asked about maybe finding a way to import a Kratos Sackboy of their own design, and the response was this from SCEA Marketing Manager Mark Valledor-

"You won't be able to customize your SackBoy in the detail that you describe, but there may be a few ways you can work it. For example, you can wear a cardboard box costume item or cardboard mask costume item and sticker it with a Kratos image using your PLAYSTATION Eye. You can even sticker/slap decorations your SackBoy directly…so the possibilities are endless."

As far as we can tell, we're indirectly being told that we'll need the PlayStation Eye to get images outside LittleBigPlanet into the levels of our own design. No imported JPEGs, which would be a whole lot simpler, of course. Then again, perhaps you can do this, and Sony is simply pushing another one of their products. That's very possible, too, but it's hard to tell…
