If you're a PlayStation 3 owner, you're aware of the Trophy support Sony added with firmware update 2.40 (or 2.41, if you were one of those who missed 2.40 before it was removed for fixing). However, some gamers are asking: will Trophy support be required of developers making PS3 games? Or will it be just a fun option if they want to try it? Well, turns out it's the latter.
As VideoGamer reports, Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford has confirmed there is "no requirement" imposed by Sony for developers to support the new Trophy system. But even so, Gearbox will most certainly utilize Trophies just 'cuz they like the idea, so future titles ( Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway , Aliens: Colonial Marines and Borderlands ) will have Trophies for gamers to nab. As for his opinion on the Trophy concept, Pitchford had this to say:
"That's pretty interesting. I want to play with it first. I think it's a cool thing. I'm addicted to achievement points on the Xbox 360 so I understand a part of what that's about. I actually have over 71,000 gamer points."
See? People can go pretty nuts for those Achievements, which is why Trophies are so very important for the PS3. Some people just love the idea of enhancing their gaming experience by striving for extra challenging goals, while others don't want to waste the time. However, regardless of your own personal preference, Trophies don't negatively impact anything. At the very least, they're just a nice option to have, and Sony is keeping it that way for devs: it's an option.
