E3 2008: X-Blades Impressions

While some of you may be wondering why I'm covering a game that's only been announced as an Xbox 360 and PC title, all we'll say is that we know something you don't…and you can take it from there. X-Blades is the newest over-the-top action game coming to a console near you, and it stars a heroine who wields, yes, blades that conveniently boast the ability to shoot projectiles, as well.

The first thing that strikes you about X-Blades is just how huge and towering the locations are. You'll frequently find yourself feeling tiny, as you're surrounded by an environment with structures that tower over you. This epic scale creates a very good sense of grandiosity for the game, which in turn prevents you from feeling claustrophobic.

The gameplay is nothing short of fast and responsive. Much like Devil May Cry, you can slash and shoot in X-Blades, allowing for some diversity in gameplay. But, unlike other action games, X-Blades takes it a step further and adds magic to the mix. You'll be able to equip magic spells to your four hot buttons, and spells will range from powerful black magic attacks to white magic.

Magic plays a central role in the game, as depending on which type you use the most will ultimately determine the ending you get. So yes, there will be multiple endings, all based on the paths and actions you take throughout your journey.

X-Blades offers a lot of diversity, which helps make it a very enjoyable game. The action is lightning quick and fun. Visually, what you have is a cel-shaded main character in a wonderfully textured world. The color palette is also very vivid, so there's tons of eye-candy to be seen.
