Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was – and still is – one of the most popular online titles in history, which is another reason why Treyarch has a small mountain to climb in order to match or surpass that excellent experience with Call of Duty: World at War . Despite going against many a gamer's wishes by returning the franchise to its traditional World War II setting, the developers have stressed, several times, that they fully understand what must be done.
The pressure is on, and they want to step up. And if they want to do that, they had best address the multiplayer and make absolutely certain it shines. According GamesIndustry.biz, Treyarch is fully prepared to make that happen, as publisher Activision has revealed details on how this new CoD entry will handle multiplayer. We will have four-player online co-op for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, and the PS3/360 versions will let players come together offline for a standard split-screen battle. If you choose to work together on the Wii version, there's "a unique co-op mode for two players." Last but not least, the developers are implementing experience points for players who consistently play both competitive and cooperative online battles. The difficulty will further alter depending "on a player's experience rank and rank of the player's friends."
They've said they need to make "the best shooter possible" and that they must "redefine the genre" if they wish to satisfy CoD fans. After Modern Warfare , that's probably true, but it's good to see the devs sticking to their vow as best they can. So far, anyway.
