Last week, it was confirmed that LucasArts laid off "a portion of its workforce," although we never got an exact number of employees affected by this move. Of course, this prompted speculation on future LucasArts video game titles, and people started to wonder if the likes of the next-gen Indiana Jones would have to be outsourced.
But the publisher confirmed to Joystiq today that the game, first announced back in 2006, "is still in development internally at the company's San Francisco offices." And the representative followed this up by saying that despite the recent lay-offs, there are currently "no plans to outsource its development to an external studio." If you didn't already know, this next Indy game will utilize the promising Euphoria animation engine from NaturalMotion, which will also be on display later this year in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed . We're really hoping for a great Indiana Jones effort, and it's good to know some corporate shuffling won't affect the development phase. We're still not entirely sure when the game will arrive – The Force Unleashed is set for September 16 – but our hopes remain high.
Oh, and of course, none of this affects the LEGO version of Indy made by Travellers Tales. That ought to be well worth playing, too, just like most other LEGO titles.
