Back during the days of the original PlayStation, gamers were treated to one of the most innovative and satisfying titles of the generation: Oddworld . An adventure and puzzle game of the highest quality, it really hooked plenty of people with it's interesting, one-of-a-kind gameplay and bizarre yet lovable main character.
Since then, the series has moved away from the 2D side-scrolling puzzle-oriented foundation and adopted a 3D environment with more of an action tinge. Take Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath for the Xbox, for example. But with a few exceptions (on the handhelds), these games are always pretty damn good, so we're certainly happy to hear that another is on the way. According to GamesIndustry.biz and president of Oddworld Inhabitants, Lorne Lanning, the studio is indeed working on a new title. The first hint of this popped up last week after a speech given by Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he announced he is working with Lanning.
"I can confirm that we're working with Jeff on Oddworld stuff, but that's all I can say at this time," said Lanning.
Braun dropped one last hint regarding this new project, and it's encouraging for fans of the franchise. Remember, these games have always looked excellent – the original was one of the best-looking PS1 titles ever – and it seems they're going to push the envelope once again with next-generation hardware.
"The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects," said Braun.
We have no idea which platforms are targeted or when the game might release, but just knowing another Oddworld is on the way is good enough for us. We'll let you know as soon as we turn up any new details.
