Sony: PS3 Operating Systems Weren’t Final At TGS

The rumors surrounding the PS3's technical issues at the Tokyo Game Show ran wild, despite Sony's best efforts to quell the uprising with an official announcement to clarify the situation . Nevertheless, it was too late to keep the negative press from raising immediate PS3 reliability concerns.

But according to sources recently referenced , the PS3's operating system wasn't yet finalized at the event, which may have led to the glitches and other problems some attendees experienced.

And as they've been quick to solidify news with the system launch right around the corner, Sony once again spoke up- apparently, it's true. The OS used in the PS3s at TGS were not final. And in fact, it's possible that it still isn't complete, with the company scrambling to hone and refine the OS right up until the last second before November 17. However, Sony evidently made it clear that it "should not affect PS3 production whatsoever.

And they went a step further, indicating they "didn't believe that the state of the OS at TGS had anything to do with the system resets or other glitches that some witnessed." As they had stated last week, Sony maintains its contention that the confined cases and generally less-than-ideal conditions caused the PS3 hardware problems at TGS.

Lastly, and perhaps most intriguing of all, Sony mentioned it had the capability to upgrade that ever-changing OS in the PS3, even after the launch in November. These upgrades would be available through the system's online network, the memory stick, or standard Blu-Ray discs, and while the news is kinda out of the blue, it's not exactly shocking. Recently, Nintendo announced they had similar plans for the Wii.

And of course, both of these announcements appear quite similar – in theory, anyway – to the Xbox 360's dashboard updates coutesy of Microsoft. At first, we couldn't be sure if those updates had anything to do with the 360's OS, but MS just recently confirmed that OS updates are included:

"The seasonal updates to the Xbox Live dashboard are functionally OS upgrades in the sense that the firmware that runs the 360's various components are being updated, offering new and improved features," said an MS representative.

What impact this news may have on the PS3's targeted consumers remains to be seen, but it seems that Sony had expected this scenario going into the launch. At this point, we can only hope that finalized OS in the PS3 will be as rock-solid as they claim.
