NPD April 08 System Sales: PS3 & X360 Flop, Nintendo Wins Big

If there was ever a time where I would call something an epic disaster, this
would be it. Analysts have long predicted April 2008 hardware sales to be
incredible, considering the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV. Well, it looks like
analysts, such as Michael Pachter, were wrong again. Dead wrong, in fact. So
wrong, that it's painful. But the epic disaster isn't how off the predictions
were, it's how bad the sales were.

Many expected the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to sell, sell, sell with the launch
of GTAIV, but instead, both consoles were left on store shelves – moving a
nearly identical figure of 188k units each. This, in contrast, is a major hurl
downwards compared to March's hardware sales. The PlayStation 2 also barely saw
movement, pushing 124.5k consoles out of retailers. The PSP fared better than
all, placing third, by selling 193k units.

Once again, it's Nintendo that came out on top, as an explosive 714k Nintendo
Wiis were purchased last month, and 415k Nintendo DS Lites. The numbers are no
doubt staggering, and we can only wonder what Microsoft's and Sony's moves are
next, and how they'll bounce back for May.
