MotorStorm Rumbles Into London

At the London Game Developers Conference on Wednesday, attendees got an eyeful of the PS3's intense racing title, MotorStorm .

As part of a session centering on applied physics in game, Evolution Studios presented a full trailer to all eager event-goers. Their intention was to put the game's Havoc engine on display, and give everyone a sneak peak at how that physics setup handled object destruction, environmental deformation, and character animations.

By providing a public glimpse of the engine, Evolution's Scott Kirkland could effectively argue the case for middleware (like Havoc) in the development next generation games. He said it allows for the designers to "concentrate on creating the game itself." In MotorStorm , Havoc is used primarily to tackle vehicle and obstacle destruction, as well as the rag-doll physics of the motorcycle riders.

Most of the presentation revolved around the technical issues surrounding such elements in the game, but Evolution also produced a number of video clips featuring the game in action. The obvious highlight of the session came when a live demonstration kicked off on PS3 development hardware. In a race sporting ten opponents, attendees got a chance to see some of that aforementioned advanced destruction; the cars would get crushed realistically upon impact, for example.

Upon conclusion of the session, Kirkland confirmed that MotorStorm would utilize the motion-sensitive feature of the PS3's Sixaxis controller. However, he didn't get into detials about the implementation of this feature, so we're left to speculate until the game's release (or until Evolution decides to come clean). The game is scheduled to be released later this year in the U.S. and Japan, and slated for the PS3 European launch in March 2007.
