Nyko Produces PS3 InterCooler

Nyko continues to cash in on the opportunities that present themselves. Much like the unit already available for the Xbox 360, Nyko has officially announced the PS3 InterCooler for Sony's upcoming console.

As the title indicates, the product is designed to increase the console's cooling capacity by adding external fans, thereby pulling more air through the rear exhaust port. The PS3 InterCooler is essentially identical to the 360's, in both purpose and design, so consumers can expect the same benefits. For example, it will allow for power cable pass-through, which means you won't need an extra power supply.

They have yet to set a price, but the company expects to price the device between $19.99 and $29.99. There is no exact release date, either, but Nyko fully expects to deliver the InterCooler for this holiday season.

The 360 Intercooler has met with moderate sales success, primarily due to the system's notorious reputation for hardware failure early on. Microsoft continues to remain vague about the specific cause of the failures, but recently, came clean about the problem. The company currently offers a deal to consumers who purchased a defective 360 before January 1, 2006: Microsoft will attempt to fix the machine, and if they can't within two days, they'll send you a new one. They're also offering a few refunds to those who already paid the $140 service charge.

And while Sony is claiming the recent rumors of overheating PS3s at the Tokyo Game Show are erroneous, this announcement comes at a darn good time for Nyko. Nobody really knows if the PS3 will experience similar problems the 360 suffered, but either way, the PS3 InterCooler might be a popular accessory come launch day.
