Sony has stated that, as of today, there are 12 million PlayStation 3s sold worldwide. – Arnold K.
Well, the PlayStation 3's reign over the Xbox 360 continues. While it looked like a rough road ahead for Sony earlier on, the PlayStation 3 is now the next-gen leader in two out of the three prime regions. Today, at the PlayStation Day media event in London, David Reeves, the CEO of SCEE, has announced that the PlayStation 3 has toppled the Xbox 360's sales in Europe.
That's right, there are now more PS3 owners in the hands of gamers, than there are Xbox 360s. "We have sold more PlayStation 3s throughout Europe than the Xbox 360, even though they launched 14 months before us," he said. What's important about this is that at this pace, the PlayStation 3 is well on its way to overtaking the Xbox 360's global sales, as well.
North America is the only major territory Sony has to compete against Microsoft, and with recent hardware sales seeing the PlayStation 3 outselling or tying the Xbox 360, Microsoft has a lot to worry about. While we don't know exactly how many PlayStation 3's have been sold worldwide, we do know this: over five million PlayStation 3's have been sold in Europe. Of that five in Europe, three million PS3s are connected to the PlayStation Network. Worldwide eight million PS3s are connected to PSN, which is an indication of the PS3's sales surpassing the 10-million mark considerably.
