Dead Space Theme: Dismemberment In Zero Gravity

If you hadn't noticed, EA is really into licensed games. In fact, some may say it's their patented bread and butter. However, when something like Dead Space comes along, it's a departure from the norm, and the executive producer for the game really had to work to get the green light. Thankfully, he did work, and the project does have the green light. What we're looking at now is something very original from the likes of EA – don't give us that big melodramatic gasp – so pay close attention, survival/horror fans.

Executive producer Glen Schofield was given 18 months to pitch his idea, and as it turns out, EA loved it. Schofield's previous projects have been From Russia With Love and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King ; one being Bond-licensed and the other being Rings-licensed. But he wanted an original title, and he wanted to go with a genre EA rarely touches. Basically, Schofield and Co. focused their efforts on making a project that's very, very different than what the EA bigwigs are used to seeing.

“The first he first thing was to show them something completely different than EA is used to,” Schofield said. “EA is always like: ‘We’re going to make T-rated games, sports games.’… The idea with this game was: ‘We are M. We’re clearly in the middle of M, if not M-plus.’” (source- MTV Multiplayer Blog)

Now, we're not entirely sure what "M-plus" is, but we assume they're talking about pushing the envelope. And they'll do just that with the game's core gameplay mechanic: dismemberment. That's right, severing limbs – in zero gravity, no less – ought be uber-appealing to certain gamers out there, and Schofield promises it's "great fun." Evidently, the higher-ups at EA have already gotten a chance to play an early build, and they are "seeing the freedom" offered by Dead Space . "Freedom" meaning the feeling they get from creating a game that is entirely original (doesn't require licenses). Anyway, we're hoping this game is one that will help to revitalize the EA name, and we'll bring you more info as soon as it becomes available.
