Last year, we almost believed we'd actually hear the announcement all Final Fantasy fans have been waiting for: Square-Enix would be remaking Final Fantasy VII for the PS3. Sadly, that announcement never came, but it doesn't mean we've abandoned hope.
And of course, the rumor can't ever die. Thanks to the Square Union, this month's issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine has a follow-up to an interview they did with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII director, Hajime Tabata. Amidst a bunch of questions concerning FFVII in general, it seems Square-Enix hasn't completely dismissed the idea of a PS3 remake. We've actually heard this sentiment from the publisher before, but this time, we get one specific hurdle that must be cleared before a remake is possible:
"The possiblity for a remake may become greater if, for instance, the schedules of the original members of the Final Fantasy VII development team, such as Kitase and Nomura, open up."
Prior to this report, Square-Enix did mention that they'd have to bring the team back together before they could do anything, so perhaps it's not surprising. So at this point, it doesn't seem to be a matter of cost or intent; it might just center on scheduling. Ah, it's always the schedule, isn't it?
