So we all know that the 80GB PlayStation 3 has been discontinued, and so whatever remains on the shelves is the last remaining bit of stock. Now, immediate speculation began circling that Sony will finally introduce the long rumored 120GB PlayStation 3. Well, GameIndustry.biz got in touch with a representative from Sony and got the rudimentary 'no comment' response from them.
Now, typically, how this sort of stuff tends to work isn't terribly complicated. When an accusation or rumor is completely false, the representatives will flat out issue a denial. When a rumor has credence, a 'no comment' statement is issued, instead. And when something is bound to happen in the near future (such as a price-drop), a statement will often end with "…at this time" attached to it. Careful wording is what you have to look for here. It isn't an exact science, but it's usually how it goes.
We're going to go out on a limb and say that we'll see the introduction of a new PlayStation 3 SKU at this year's Game Developers Conference, which is just a mere two weeks away. Furthermore, seeing as how supplies of the 80GB are dwindling down, Sony will time the release of the new SKU for a March release, as well as order a price-drop on the remaining stock of 80GB PS3s when the launch occurs.
Purely speculation on our part, but it does feel like the most probable cause. Game Developers Conference will run between Feb. 18th-22nd, so keep up with us for updates!
