It has been one of the most intense and controversial FPSs in recent memory, so of course, another installment is on the way. Activision has officially announced they will release the next entry in the acclaimed Soldier of Fortune franchise, where players will experience the organization known as "The Shop," and you will become a hired mercenary. It's Soldier of Fortune: Payback , and…um…there's gonna be a lot of payback.
Here's Activision's statement direct from the press release-
"Soldier of Fortune Payback evolves the signature gameplay of its predecessors with refined controls, tension-packed warzones, and an enemy damage system that may be shocking to even experienced FPS players. Boasting more weapons options than any previous Soldier of Fortune installment, Soldier of Fortune Payback’s impressive arsenal includes an array of more than 30 weapons including sub-machine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, projectile explosives, weapon attachments and cutting-edge tactical weapons."
Just like any FPS these days, Payback will boast all the multiplayer frills we've come to expect, like online Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Elimination, Team Elimination, Capture the Flag, and Demolition. Furthermore, the developers are going to include some nifty online options that will allow players to see maps "tuned specifically for multiplayer action, persistent stat-tracking throughout the gamer’s online career, and many server settings for custom online play." As for the storyline, the game apparently reflects the current worldly trend of "outsourcing" wars, which gels nicely with the whole mercenary thing.
Soldier of Fortune: Payback will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC and is surprisingly close: Activision has it scheduled for November 2007. Another great FPS for this year!
