Yeah, we know what you're thinking. The majority of participants in this poll are under a certain age, right?
What other explanation can there be for the results? Well, don't forget that Super Mario Bros. is right there at #2, so…
The Guinness Book of World Records polled 5,000 gamers from 140 countries around the world; the question was simple: What's your favorite video game IP of all time? As you can see by the controversial results , Activision's mega blockbuster Call of Duty took home the top spot. Then came Super Mario Bros. , Minecraft , Grand Theft Auto , and Halo .
Here's the top 20:
Yes, we now live in a world where Angry Birds is more loved than franchises like Final Fantasy , Sonic , and Metal Gear . Super.
Seems about right up until Angry Birds. Surprised Metal Gear is in that list as well.
And THE LAST OF US, one of the best games of the last generation, is not even on that list.
How could they ignore TLoU?!
Sheeesh!
Edit: Ben, if they voted for Super Mario Bros, then they're probably talking about the NES game. So we're probably talking about grown-arsed adults here who voted for SMB because is the game they played as kids.

Wow, Minecraft is probably the newest game of the bunch, and it still made it to #3!
That's a little heartbreaking I cannot deny… Borderlands,Fifa, Minecraft… I had to even search up League of Legends. At least Final Fantasy & Metal Gear are somewhere in that list…
This list breaks my heart but did you seriously not know what League of Legends was? I don't even play and I actually find you not knowing what it is more surprising than CoD being on the top of this list.
LoL is pretty much the most played game in the world with tournaments happening all the time with jackpots surpassing $1mil.
One tend to not be as interested in titles that's not available on your gaming platform. I can totally relate to that, even though it's a little bit strange in the case of LoL, since it's *that* big.
But still, I can understand it.
No, I've genuinely never heard of it. But I have never followed PC gaming at all and these online strategy games like this of Dota don't catch my interest at all.
Very cool to see Borderlands on that list!
But a little sad to not find any BioWare franchises there. And one might wonder why Fallout is nowhere to be found.
No Sony IPs in dat Top 20? Huh. Great list overall, though.

And i am proud that it is not even on my top ten.
Socom is my number 1,a game that require brain cells and communication to be played.
Of course COD does not require these qualities.
Has anyone thought about the fact that 5000 people isn't even enough to be considered a statistical anomaly? I get it, it's a poll of gamers, and no one real cares what gamers think, but I would have hoped that a resource such as the Guinness Book of World Records would have a bit more stringent guidelines in place as to their polling procedures.
I completely agree, you'd need at least half a million people to come up with real statistics. 5000? I could walk around my campus and ask this question and get probably somewhere near the same result.
Five thousand is not enough people polled to say Call of Duty is the most liked game by gamers…
… But if one combine it with the sales charts, one might say they got a strong case.
This poll should not be taken serious.
Do these polls in different parts of the world and the list will vary.
My favorite franchise, MGS, is highlighted but there's no way that COD deserve that spot on the list.
140 countries isn't diverse enough?
If you evenly distributed the people out per country that would be roughly 36 people per country questioned. That's not diverse enough to be suitable for even the country's population.
@coverton341 – This poll was done online with people who are costumers of Guiness. It was limited to the readership who buy this book about videogames.
So this poll wasn't suppose to represent the opinion of the entire population of their respective countries. Just the opinion of the people who buy the book.
We can assume that these people buy the book every year. And that they're probably very familiar with videogames. But it's pretty obvious that most of them are CoD fans.

the demo graphics aren't right maybe or maybe just not the right people who knows
COD tops the list as usual. There's no accounting for taste.
FIFA? Jesus Lorde. Franchise is only real because of the real sport, with the federation of the same name.
Victory!
Im pretty sure some younger people voted for COD too though – its not just us older guys that play.
This list annoys me… I feel like the poll was built by a 2 year old asking 5 year olds.
Gta should be no 1, but that's just my opinion…
yeah well mine would be different and this is not in any particular order the the names:
Age of Empires
Rachet and clank
jak and daxter
Battlefield
Pokémon
lego games
burnout
grantrismo
crash bandicoot
plus as of more recently
tomb raider
unchartered
god of war
The Elder Scrolls
Assassin's Creed
(alot of sony games yeah i know i like alot of what they make)
COD its even remotely close its certainly no where near mine but this is the mainstream and i don't consider myself mainstream by any means far from it.
i don't think this list in the article is gunna be for everyone
happy gaming
