Select Sony TVs Will Support PlayStation Now Next Week

Sony's goal is to bring their new streaming service, PlayStation Now, to multiple connected devices, and that includes TVs.

The company has revealed that Now will debut on some Sony TVs starting on June 30. This includes all of the new 4K HDTVs that are currently available, along with some of the 1080p sets. Using a Dual Shock 3 controller, owners of compatible TVs can play select PlayStation 3 games without the console. This early program is called the Private Pilot service and for now, we don't know how long it will last so take advantage if you can.

The service has been in a closed beta for PS4 and PS3, and an open beta will be available on the PS4 on July 31. If you've sampled the service, what do you think? Is it something you'd use often? Personally, I think it's a nice little option, but I'm not sure if I'd get a huge amount of use out of it…

Funny how Sony and MS are entering TV in different ways. It's also interesting that it uses a DS3. So there's no way the TVs will run PS4 games ever, meaning this is all a gateway drug to PS4, and then down the line to PS5 while PS4 games make it onto TV and the DS4 is needed.

Smart

I would assume most PS4 games could also use the controls on the DS3?

Yeah, I've seen the Sony 4k TVs running both 4k content and regular 1080p content and both were amazing. the 4K picture quality was absolutely breathtaking! But I have to say even the 1080p stuff looked better than I was expecting and certainly better than I am used to.

and it didn't matter how close I got to the TV, it always looked good – never able to see pixels or rough edges. I'm sold.

Hi y'all. Never had a playstation but I got one of these new TVs. I just purchased a 90 day rental of this tactical espionage game called "Alpha Protocol." I figured for $15 I'd get a great value, seeing that a new game like this goes for around $60, right?
If I like what I experience I'll be sure to rent more for this bargain price. I have my eyes on this FFX-2 game. It's pretty expensive at $30. But I hear FF games are great!
$30 is still half off!

Haha – exactly 🙂

But it must be said, you need to rent around 15 games @30USD before it becomes affordable to buy a PS4 instead. So for those who play just a few games a year this would still make economical sense.

I still hope there will be a $10 – $15 a month subscription…
