These productions are so popular these days, that it's a legitimate question.
Of course, on the surface, the answer to the question should be a huge, resounding "No." After all, we're talking about games that already launched years earlier; hence, they don't qualify for any sort of "game of the year" honors, right?
The title(s) isn't of this year, for example. So, literally, it doesn't make much sense. At the same time, what if we're only concerned with giving out awards to the year's best games, regardless of whether or not they were available previously? I mean, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt pushed into 2015, I think there's a darn good chance that the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster may be the best role-playing video game of 2013. Yes, the games came out a long time ago but if they're still better than other games in that genre, shouldn't they be recognized as such?
And what about The Last Of Us: Remastered and Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition ? Not only are both fantastic games, but both do offer more than the original release. So, we're looking at even better versions of these already amazing titles. Let's face it: What this year will really be superior to The Last Of Us ? It could happen, I suppose, but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm just asking this question for discussion purposes, by the way. I don't believe that any HD remake or remaster of any kind should be considered for annual awards. 🙂
I don't see any harm in it. If anything, it could spur developers to actually strive to do better with their new productions if they realise that games that are years old outstrip more contemporary efforts. At the same time, I do kind of feel that selecting TR and TLoU amongst them is a little dodgy considering both were highly rewarded only a year ago.
And then in reality it just makes them 'remaster' more old games and then it's like we have nothing 'new'.
Never make anything new? That'll never happen. That's an unrealistic fear.
I believe that remakes will be ignored from any awards just like the movie business.
Most remakes launches years after the original, so the grading standard are different. Even our expectations are different. In the FFX remake, the AI bystanders looks horrible. LoU is a little different, because the it came out a year ago, our expectations haven't changed and the PS4 have not really planted their ground with their gaming style. LoU could've passed for a PS4 release game and no one would notice.
godsman,
Reboots in the movie industry are ignored because they generally s**t. Also, they're remakes, not remasters.
Wolfeh,
That's completely irrational. As long as there are creatively-minded people working in the gaming industry, new things will be released because that is what creatively-minded people do. Also, sooner or later the lustre of remasters would fade (and even now they generally don't sell huge amounts. It doesn't offer a comprehensive list (and it isn't exactly accurate), but type 'HD' or 'collection' into the search bar on VGChartz. Surprisingly few of the HD remasters listed break a million, and even though remasters may get critical acclaim, it's the sales they'll always follow.

Sure they should be considered.
They shouldn't be winning if developers are doing a good job. If they do, then that's a sign they need to step up.
Yeah, then they would be forced to realize that certain games (like FFX) are just doing things better.
I'd say updated and/or secondary reviews for HD remakes would be fine, but a great big giant no to any secondary GOTY's!
They've already had their fun in the GOTY sun once in the 1st go-round already, so it's not fair if they're allowed to double-dip the GOTY awards once again.
Just my 2 cents….
No, I don't think so. Unless a game has been remastered beyond just some technical upscaling, it's still the same game, and I think nostalgia could cloud the objectivity of certain minds.
I think it should be considered this year, there's no way any of these other games are going to be the best in their respective categories if one considers the remakes.
I don't know about that. FFX HD has competition from Dark Souls II, Bravely Default, FFXIV: ARR, Bound By Flame, Drakengard III, Dragon Age III (reportedly), Lords of the Fallen and Xillia 2. (Wow… 2014 has RPGs. Actually didn't realise how many until that list.)
TR and TLoU aren't alone either, with Watch Dogs, the two AC games, MGS: GZ, Arkham Knight, Mad Max and The Order all looking like contenders in the action/adventure realm, if not the narrative one.
You're selling short some fantastic-looking games, methinks.
Can't help it, they don't impress me much.
Totally just envisioned you singing 'That Don't Impress Me Much' by Shania Twain 0.o
No, quite simply this is a game which has already been established as a product of its time. The concept of a yearly based reward system is to acknowledge the progressive talent of the industry, not imploring us to look back to better days. When I look at Final Fantasy X HD, I do not think of a game that was released in 2014.
But while we're on the subject, the gaming industry needs its equivalent of the Oscars. Right now, any game journalist (professional or amateur) seems to be able to class a title as Game of the Year and then we see 20 games every year release a DLC edition labeled 'Game of the Year' edition. I'd like to see where Dead Island got their GotY source from… But it is an issue and I also reckon with an official award ceremony, the industry would have more credibility.
never. thats like asking a movie who won in the oscars to come back and be nominated when they reboot it.
Why stop there? If a game is still being played a year or two later, and is better than most games, why not give it an award too? What about PS1 games rereleased on Plus or Now?
how can a classic ever hope to compete with newer titles?
thats like asking if crash bandicoot ever did get a HD remake, would it have a chance of taking on a new rayman, or mario, or whatever platformer.
of course not!
i wanna see a HD remake of the series more than anyone else out there, but there is no freaking way in hell it should be considered for a GOTY nomination.
same reason why reviewing said games is so stupid.
to review it is to hold it to modern standards, but to hold it to modern standards is just stupid because they did not exist back then so how could they possibly be met!?
Ha, sorta kinda agree with you.
Well if a game is released in 2013 on PS3 then released on another platform say PS4 in 2014 then happy to get GOTY on both platforms in different years.
Also happy for a HD repolish to get Vita game of the year like Person 4 Golden or potentially FFX.
Short and simple answer No. Why because if it didn't win the game of the year when it came out then it shouldn't win at all.
What if it did?
If people are scared that would just mean people would only make remakes, you're forgetting that game makers don't make games to get GOTY awards. They make them to sell and make money.
Remakes are great and all, but they don't sell as well as a new AAA game. Plus, people are only going to buy remakes of awesome games.
No one's gonna buy an HD upgrade of DNF.
Sure I think they should be considered. Mass effect 2 had been out for some time before it came to the PS3 and I'm sure that was considered for GOTY etc. Don't see why it should be different when other games make their first appearance on a console.
And if an HD remake of something everybody's already played wins GOTY, every developer on the planet should hang their head in shame.
They should be considered but unless it's a complete overhaul of the graphics they'll most likely never win.
Anyone thinks that FFX HD or any other HD remake will win game over the year? I highly doubt it.
OT for a second,
Just wanted to say that I hope all you folks around the Queensland area & all the coastal areas just affected by Cyclone Ita, have made it though OK without too much heartache in the way of ruined lives &/or damages.
Hey, thanks Saint. They copped it pretty hard up where it made landfall, but it was pretty weak here in Townsville.
Glad you're OK.
Had seen some "news alert" pics of the banana & sugar cane plantations that were leveled & completely wiped out.
Hope the Cyclone's tidal surges didn't add too much to the devastation.
Our own Hurricane Sandy last year devastated whole areas of my state of New Jersey & parts of New York state with some losses of life & wiping out homes, the majority of damages coming from the massive tidal surges crashing landward.
No no no no no, they already had there go at it. Lets not encourage them to keep making these god forsaken remakes and focus on new IP's….
They should have their own remake/remaster category if anything
I'll say it again…
Why in God's name do people think giving a remake an award is going to motivate developers to ONLY release remakes?
SALES will do that. If remakes make lots of free money, it'll happen. If it doesn't, they won't.
Heck, reviewers could give remakes all 2/10 scores… but if they sold well, they would continue to be made.
Again… awards are just nods for a job well done. They have no monetary value to shareholders.
Lets be realistic, guys.
Its unfair to let TLOU get GOTY again. Thats basically saying "Match the quality, story, gameplay, atmosphere and graphics of this game in order to get GOTY." Hard thing to do.
Irregardless of me liking Metro more than TLOU, I know that TLOU is easily the better game. Same goes for anyone who liked another game more than TLOU, the game itself is beyond a lot of what we see and it does deserve its place as GOTY but allowing it to get it again would be super mean to other possible entries had it not been for TLOU.
