Microsoft: “Ditch” Your PS3, We’ll Give You Xbox One For $399

Ready to "ditch" your old PlayStation 3 in favor of an Xbox One?

If you're willing, Microsoft has a deal for you, as spotted by a NeoGAF member : A new promotion asks gamers to "ditch" their PS3 at one of Microsoft's stores in the US. If they do so, they'll get the Xbox One for only $399, which is $100 less than normal retail cost.

This trade-in also applies to old Xbox 360 systems as well, but that's not what takes center-stage in the ad, is it? The offer runs through March 2 and requires that the trade-in consoles be in good working condition. It's not a coincidence that the competition – namely, the PS4 – is priced at $399. Analysts and industry insiders have been saying for months that the price difference is the biggest problem for Microsoft right now.

So, why not try to lure some PlayStation fans to their side? Makes perfect sense, right? This definitely sounds like a pretty standard Microsoft tactic, doesn't it?

Thank you for pointing out the typo, its actually a common typo for me, the F and V are right above and below one another and I make this typo more than I would like. It is a tiny bit frustrating online when you make a typo and your whole statement gets overlooked because of it.

@underdog thanks for backing me up while I was not around 🙂

@Simcoe, and of course keep your PS3 that was what I meant 🙂

Wow! Didn't think the times were desperate fro MS. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I am sure a number of people will do the deal. Its really not much of a deal, but to some consumers to get on the next gen boat… just might be desperate enough.

Keep playing… and I am keeping my PS3 thank you very much!!

This just looks like what at&t is doing with T-Mobile customers and vice versa. Even this lame tactic to grab people isn't original. Keep those PlayStations people and you won't regret it:)

Yeah, but then I have to buy a bunch of new games and give up my old library, including The Last of Us! Not to mention, I'd lose a piece of my soul in the process.

Not ever going to happen! Why not? I'll give you 5 reasons. 1) I'm loyal to Playstation 2)I will continue to be using my 500GB PS3 for some time.3)Xbox Live is required for everything.4) I have amassed a large library of games.5) Microsoft is a dirty, low blow, cheap tactic employing dispicable joke of a company and the people within it a horrible example of humanity! BECAUSE THATS WHY.

#3 is important. Not only is Xbox Live NOT free but the PS3 is the only system that does NOT require a subscription to play online. A great reason to keep it. Not to mention that I have about 80 games for the PS3. Maybe MS will buy your hands too.

Edit. Meant to say: Maybe MS will buy your GAMES too but then again.. They'd probably buy you HANDS too if given the opportunity.

Now Sony would just have to counter with trading 360's and a get a PS4 for even cheaper!

Yet another story to start console wars on the major video game sites. IGN had 6500+ comments about this and GS had 3300 from lonely males who have nothing better to do but spam the comments section with their poor attempts at being adult or clever. We really have to do something about these single men.

If this is true, this is another sad chapter in the Xbox One's existence. Nobody is going to trade in their PS3 console when they can find a buyer on eBay or Kijiji. A PS3 is worth more than $100. The PS3 is also a lot more desirable at this point than the Xbone. At the rate the Xbone is going, the PS3 is always going to be the more desirable of the two.

Of course, this is coming the same week that there is a rumored new SKU of the Xbone that will be $399 but it won't be the NSA-approved Kinect 2.0 that is removed, it won't be the hard drive that is removed, it will be the Blu-Ray that is removed. That would mean everything would have to be bought digitally.

The rumored SKU sounds like a paper weight to me.

First PS3 that popped up on ebay used is going for $153 right now.

On Amazon, the cheapest is $119. Second is $159. Seems to me like $100 is a rip-off no matter what you upgrade to.

Oddly enough, the cheapest used 360 is $86 (and $88 respectively)…. In that case, it's apparently a decent deal….

I intend to buy an Xbox One anyways, and would much rather keep my PS3 for last generation gaming goodness.

Thanks for the offer Microsoft, but I'm afraid I must deny your stupidity… at least this time.

If I was in the US, I'd be tempted. My old PS3's about ten hours away from yellow lighting if the sound of it is any indication… But then, the PS4 comes first on my next gen console list.

As next gen systems are not backwards compatible with my PS3 discs there is no chance of me getting rid of my PS3… That isn't even a good estimate for its value.

MS wants to BUY this generation more than the last. Sounds like they simply refuse to lose or at least be satisfied with their momentum. The X isn't doing bad. Just not as good as the 4. If they are willing to do something like this so soon imagine what they will do if and when the X gets pounded by the PS4 in sales.

No question, a sign of desperation. The marketing/communications for Xbox One has been, um interesting from the get-go. And now this? This strongly, strongly suggests Microsoft execs have analyzed the data, and found the outlook to be bleak.

As a side note, how smart does Sony look now giving away a bona fide BOUNTY of great PS3 games for free via PS Plus? I knew I was right to hang on to that console, even when I got my PS4. I still play the 3 at least as much as the 4, just so many awesome games being offered and more on the way all the time.

Cheaper Xbox One model for 2014 rumor at some sites like gamespot.
Maybe at the end of 2014?And then Sony goes again under the price of the xbox 😉

Also, I feel inclined to point out — how many 360 owners would gladly upgrade to an Xbox One if it was fully backward compatible? I will keep saying it, it is a tremendous disincentive to buy a new console when it doesn't play your old games. MS went about this the wrong way — the huge 360 install base out there would be MUCH more inclined to upgrade to their new system, despite it's high price and questionable specs and game lineup, if they could take their treasured 360 library with them. A huge, costly mistake by MS.

Sony at least has the excuse that going from Cell to x86 architecture made it virtually impossible to have PS3 games play on PS4. What's MS's excuse?

Might have been a smart move if PS3s weren't selling on Craigslist for $150+ all the time and if the PS4, a more powerful system, was not also $399 so you could simply keep your PS3 and still buy the PS4 for the same price.

Also anyone who already has a PS3 probably has it for a reason seeing as the X360 was the cheaper option all of last Gen.

I don't get how Microsoft with such unethical practices and despite of both competition and customers never got condemned in court.
